[4K China] Walking In The Ancient City Of Ping Yao | 平遥古城 | China Walking Tour
????[Intro]
Pingyao, officially Pingyao Ancient City,s a settlement in central Shanxi, China, famed for its importance in Chinese economic history and for its well-preserved Ming and Qing urban planning and architecture. Administratively, it comprises the town of Gutao in Pingyao County, Jinzhong. It has a population of about 500,000.
The town is first recorded c. 800 BC and has been the seat of local government since at least the Qin. By the 16th century, it was a regional financial hub; some consider it to have been the financial centre of the Qing Empire in the late 19th century. It is a AAAAA-rated tourist attraction, and the settlement and the outlying Zhenguo Temple and Shuanglin Temple became a World Heritage Site in 1997.
The city walls of Pingyao were constructed in 1370,the 3rd year of the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming. They enclose an area of about 2.25 km2 (0.87 sq mi).The town is accessed by six barbican gates, one each on the north and south walls and two each on the east and west walls. This pattern is similar to that of a turtle (the head, tail and four legs), earning Pingyao the moniker Turtle City. The walls measure about 12 m (39 ft) high, with a perimeter of 6,163 m (20,220 ft). A 4 m wide and 4 m (13 ft) deep moat can be found just outside the walls. Aside from the four structured towers at the four corners, there are also 72 watchtowers and more than 3,000 battlements. The number of defensive works supposedly represents the number of Confucius's disciples and other students. The walls are considered among the best-preserved ancient city walls on this scale.
???? [History]
There was already a settlement in place at Pingyao by the reign of the Xuan King (r. c. 827 – c. 782 BC), when the Zhou raised earthen ramparts around the site.
In the Spring and Autumn period, the county belonged to the kingdom of Jin. It was part of the kingdom of Zhao in the Warring States period. Under the Qin, it was known as Pingtao. During the Han Dynasty, it was known as the seat of Zhongdu County.
Pingyao served as the financial center of the region from the 16th century and of the entire Qing Empire during the late 19th century. During those times, there were more than 20 financial institutions within the city, comprising more than half of the total in the whole country. Rishengchang was the first and largest, controlling almost half of China's silver trade under the late Qing before going bankrupt in 1914 in the aftermath of the Xinhai Revolution.
Organized restorations have been undertaken periodically since the 15th century, the most recent phase beginning in 1979.In 1986, China designated Pingyao as one of the Chinese Historical and Cultural Cities. In 2004, part of the southern walls collapsed; they have since been reconstructed. In 2015, Pingyao ancient city became a national 5A-class tourist attraction.
Pingyao still retains its urban layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, conforming to a typical ba gua pattern. More than 300 sites in or near the city have ancient ruins. The city has over a hundred streets and lanes, lined with close to 4,000 17th–19th century shops and residences. The streets and storefronts still largely retain their historical appearance.

THE LONGEST WAY 1.0 - 350 days of hiking through China - TIMELAPSE
In 2008, I walked through China - 1 year, 4500km. I let my hair and my beard grow. This is the resulting video. UPDATE: ▶ I have decided to continue my walk home from China to Germany. I'm currently in Turkey, or about halfway through.I post daily videos on this channel, and I blog about it here:
ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
▶ I didn't finish my original goal of walking to Germany in 2008. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking.
▶ All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi was completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.
▶ I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.
▶ Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.
▶ This is not a strict 1 pic a day video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.
▶ If you liked the music I used in this video, get it here: The Kingpins - L'Aventurier Zhu Fengbo - Olive Tree
▶ The core of this project is in actually my blog where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later.

Mainshan Mountains, China
Mainshan Mountains, China
Mainshan Mountains, located in central Shanxi Province, central North China. Covering an area of 75 square kilometers, the mountain is a national scenic spot with 14 tourist areas and 400 attractions. Mianshan Silky Mountain is noted for its natural scenery, especially for its cultural and religious relics. It is also the birthplace of Qingming Festival Grave Cleaning Day, which is one of China’s most important traditional festivals and items of intangible cultural heritage.
According to web Chinahighlights, A history dating back some 2,500 years ago, Mian Shan boasts enchanting natural scenery and cultural significance. Besides, there are several restaurants and hotels that were built hanging on the steep cliffs, which provide a unique dining or accommodation experience for travelers. The spectacular scenes and cultural relics at Mian Mountain provide tourists with many activities, such as watching sunset or sunrise at Dragon Head Temple, visiting Daluo Palace (the largest Taoist temple in China), walking on Sky Bridge and enjoying the natural beauty of Shuitao Valley. Dragon Head Temple is the best place to watch sunrise or sunset in a sea of clouds. It is also a landmark of Mian Shan with its exquisite architecture. Daluo Palace is the largest Taoist temple in China. It was built and restored during the Tang Dynasty of 618–907, and the supreme spirit of Taoism and other folk gods are worshipped there. Daluo Palace also has the largest Taoist sutra depository over the country. Sky Bridge was built between steep cliffs, 300 meters or 328 yards long and no more than one meter or 3.3 feet wide. It is suspended over 300 meters or 980 feet from the bottom of a valley and over 200 meters or 660 feet from the mountain tops.
Mian Shan is also called Jie Shan Jie Mountain after Jie Zhitui (?–636 BC) a loyal defender of the Duke of Jin 697–628 BC. Jie Zhitui is reputed to have made soup with the flesh of his own leg for the duke when he was starving. After Jie had resigned his service to the duke, he lived on Mian Shan. The duke later wanted to reward him, but could not find him, so he had the mountain burnt in an effort to drive Jie out. Jie and his mother were later found tragically burnt to death on the mountain. The Duke of Jin then instituted Hanshi (Cold Food) Day in 636 BC in remembrance of Jie, which later became the Qingming Festival. Jiexiu, the city to the north of Mian Shan and the prefecture in which Mian Shan lies, means “The Resting Place of Jie”.
Mianshan - Sky Bridge — This is a breathtaking place! The temple structures and the sky walk built on the mountain with the scenery around are just amazing!
Mian Shan is a sacred mountain for Buddhist and Taoist religions alike where temples have been built on the face of the cliffs.

Crumbling Huangshan shrines reborn as whimsical hotel
In a remote village near the foothills of the Yellow Mountains in eastern China's Anhui Province, two centuries-old family shrines seemed destined to become ruins...until Zhang Gongli and his family rescued them, piecing the two facades together to create a new structure entirely. Now, the ruins have been resurrected as a hotel! But Gongli comes from a family of filmmakers, so while the outside of the hotel is traditional Hui-style architecture, what you find when you step inside is something else entirely...
In a three-part series called China's Extraordinary Hotels from the TV show Travelogue, the first episode From Relic to Resort explores accommodations that brought crumbling but historically significant structures back to life as modern hotels. In this excerpt from the episode, a Huangshan hotel nestled in a remote village marries East and West, and merges vintage with contemporary.
