???????? Slovenia day Trips - Novo Mesto Dolenjska region A nice walk through the town

Slovenia day trips - Novo Mesto Dolenjska region A nice walk through the town
Among Dolenjska hills, less than an hour's drive by motorway from Ljubljana and Zagreb, less than two hours from the sea and the Alps, lies Novo mesto. Surrounded by the Krka River it lies casually only on a panoramic photo. The metropolis of Dolenjska is growing, evolving, looking for new opportunities; in particular, it offers its residents a welcoming environment for both life and work, from hiking in Gorjanci, to the most modern pharmaceutical laboratories.

NOVO MESTO IN BRIEF

The Municipality of Novo mesto (Slovene: Mestna občina Novo mesto) is a municipality in southeastern Slovenia, close to the border with Croatia. There are approximately 37,300 people living in the municipality, with over 23,000 living in the town of Novo mesto that is the seat of the municipality. Novo mesto is the seventh largest town in Slovenia and the Municipality of Novo mesto is one of the eleven Urban Municipalities in Slovenia.

Novo mesto is the administrative, economic, ecclesiastical, cultural, educational, medical and sports centre of the Southeast Region of Slovenia. It is a hub of plentiful activities, which goes far beyond the regional framework.

It is recognisable by its exceptionally successful pharmaceutical, automotive, construction, textile and other industries, as the municipality is home to large companies such as Krka, Revoz, Adria Mobil and TPV. That is why Novo mesto is called “the export capital of Slovenia”.

The rich archaeological sites in Novo mesto have also made it known as Novo mesto – The Town of Situlae. Together with five other Slovenian towns Novo mesto was the European Capital of Culture 2012.

HISTORY AND HERITAGE

Historical frames are necessary in order to understand the present and optimistically look into the future. Novo mesto Kandija.Novo mesto’s history dates back 650 years, when Rudolf IV. von Habsburg decided that geostrategic advantages of the bend in the Krka river deserve city rights. Before Rudolf, the geostrategic advantages and natural endowments of the space around the bend of the Krka were already known to the Illyrians and Celts. The first known settlement of this area dates back to the 10th century BC. The archaeological site Kapiteljska njiva is one of the most important ones in Europe, when it comes to researching that period. On this hill, situated above the town, archaeologists have found situlae, remains of tools, weapons and other items, whose origin dates back to the Neolithic through to the decline of antiquity. The most famous excavations were dated back to the period from the 7th to the 5th century BC, when Hallstatt nobles were buried at Marof.

In the Middle Ages, Novo mesto was marked by Turkish incursions. An important line of defense against this danger took place right across the Krka valley, where one can still see more or less preserved castles from that period. Novo mesto was surrounded by walls, whose remains are still visible today. Some of these are the picturesque Breg area, part of the medieval wall is preserved in Šance and from this period are the former main entrance to the city - Gorenja (Ljubljanska) gate on one side and Dolenjska (Karlovac) gate on the other side of town.

During this period, Novo mesto was under the administration of the Habsburgs, who were aware of the geostrategic importance of this region in their efforts to extend its influence to the Adriatic Sea. Therefore, Rudolf IV von Habsburg signed a Charter on the rights to the city on 7th of April 1365, for which he earned a representation on the Novo mesto’s coat of arms.

???????? Slovenia day Trips: Postojna town The Slovenian Karst region capital [Kras] home of Postojna Cave

Slovenia day Trips: Postojna town The Slovenian Karst region capital [Kras] home of Postojna Cave
I decided to visit the town of Postojna which is the capital of Slovenian Karst region or Kras in Slovenian. It is a small but charming town, with a big tourist attraction the Postojna Cave / Postonjska jama and about 10 Km from Postojna there is a fairy tale Predjama Castle / Predjamski Grad. Follow my videos to see how they look like!
HISTORY: For such a small municipality, Postojna boasts more legends and curiosities than you might imagine. The region is famous for several archaeological sites from the Palaeolithic era, the best known of which is undoubtedly the Betalov spodmol rock shelter, which you can visit yourself. Climb to the summit of Sovič – the mysterious hill in the centre of the town – or stroll through the oldest part of Postojna, the district known as Majlont, which lies just below the hill. The existence of a castle on Sovič is first attested in the mid-13th century. This castle was destroyed by fire in the late 17th century and replaced by a new lower castle or manor house in today's Tito Square (Titov trg) – where the Karst Research Institute is now based.

Postojna – Piazza Dalmazia, postcard sent in 1936, source: Notranjska Museum Postojna, History Department
The town's name has not always been Postojna. It is first attested in the 13th century as Arnsberg (later Adelsberg). The name went through several permutations before arriving at its definitive form. In the mid-14th century, for example, we find the form Postoyna. Interestingly, Postojna was originally defined as a market (15th century), and it was not until 1909 that it was granted town status.

What do you know about carters and cart transport? The people of Postojna are still known as carters today, and the reason for this is to be found in the town's history. The development of cart transport was extremely significant for Postojna, thanks to its position on the trade route and main road (the Mast Road) connecting Carniola to the Adriatic and Friuli. The road was later joined by a railway line, and the first train steamed into Postojna in the 19th century. The building of the Südbahn or Southern Railway and the coming of the train caused the decline of cart transport, but only as an activity, since in the warmth of their hearts the people of Postojna are still carters. The bygone days of cart transport are remembered every year at the Carters' Holiday (Furmanski praznik) in Postojna.

The arrival of the train also meant the beginnings of mass tourism in Postojna. Tourists came to Postojna with one purpose – just like the majority of visitors today: to see the famous Postojna Cave. This was what made Postojna one of the most important tourist destinations in Europe at that time. Incredibly, in 1894 Postojna received seven times as many visitors as Bled and Lake Garda! Since then it has grown in importance in other areas too – as the centre of education and administration (including a law court) in the wider region, as well as its centre of commerce, culture and healthcare. Efforts continue today to further consolidate Postojna's status as a centre of international karstology and as a tourist destination.

Did you know:
that the original name for Postojna derives from a German word meaning eagle (aro), so Arnsperg can literally be translated as Eagle's Hill.
Postojna is also another name for the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), which once nested on Sovič and also appears on Postojna's town crest.
The name Postojna also has one further meaning – postojáti or postati means to stop for a brief time.

Vrhnika - Slovenia

Vrhnika is situated some 20 kilometres west of Ljubljana and is easily reachable by public transport or by car via A1 motorway. The town lies at the edge of Ljubljana Marshes and by the river Ljubljanica, the sources of which are nearby. Its streets are a mixture of newer suburban and older pseudo rural architecture.
At the Ljubljanica River Exhibition you can explore the rich history of the area and learn about the unique natural landscape of Ljubljana Marshes. The museum is housed in Vrhnika's brand new cultural centre which used to be an industrial object. Its halls are submerged in half-light and packed with archaeological artifacts including the replica of world's oldest wooden wheel (3,350-3,100 B.C.).
There are still great things to come. A large, 15-metre long and cca. 2,000 years old longboat, which is the largest such find in Europe was excavated last year from the riverbank near the local petrol station.

Found me a new Castle - Should I move in? - Slovenia day Trips

In this video I explore the Brdo pri Lukovici Castle - Brdo Castle, the local church and the graveyard behind it as well as the Honey Bunny Bee Keepers Museum. Let's take a walk around this small town and see what it is all about!

Brdo Castle is located in the settlement Brdo pri Lukovici. The castle was first mentioned as Brdo in the 15th century but was destroyed in the peasant uprising of 1515. The current outer structure of the ruins is a 16th-century castle that was built by the Counts of Lamberg. In 1803 the castle was sold to Janez Burger. It was then inherited by his daughter Ivana Burger Höffern, who remained the owner until 1879. The Slovene writer Janko Kersnik was born at the castle in 1852 and was also its owner from 1883 until his death in 1897. Ownership then passed to Kersnik's mother Berta Höffern Kersnik, and then to his son Anton Kersnik in 1911. In 1941 the German occupation authorities arrested inhabitants and exiled them to Serbia, expropriated the castle and headquartered a German police and military unit in it. The castle was burned down by the resistance movement in 1943. After the end of the Second World War the revolutionary authorities refused permission to its owners to restore the castle. The building was therefore left without a roof, and it rapidly began to deteriorate and only the exterior walls now remain.

BRDO PRI LUKOVICI - BEEKEEPING CENTRE OF SLOVENIA
Slovenian Beekeeper’s Association Centre in Brdo pri Lukovici, where on a stroll along the Beekeeping Education Path visitors can get right up close to the 3 large beehives of the Lukovica, Grosuplje and Domžale beekeeping associations. The centre offers an expansive range of services for beekeepers, training and education, a restaurant, a shop, and also, upon prior arrangement, guided tours can be arranged.

The Vipava Valley, Slovenia

Meandering vineyards and orchards across the verdant hills of the Vipava Valley are located between the Adriatic and the Alps, and set along the Vipava River.

Local gastronomy includes the Vipava prosciutto, the Nanos cheese along with a wide variety of local wine such as pinela and zelen.

The picture-perfect Vipavski Križ, a romantic fortified town with narrow streets, is one of the most prominent settlements in the valley.

Once the smallest town in the Habsurg Empire and a bustling trade centre, today holds the popular Zelen Wine Festival in June and a medieval festival the Sound of the Castle Walls in August.
