China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the capital city of Urumqi, is located in Northwest China and is one of China’s five ethnic minority autonomous regions. Covering an area of 1.66 million square kilometers, it is the provincial administrative region with the largest land area in China, accounting for 1/6 of China's total land area. At the end of 2019, the permanent population was 25,232,200. In 2020, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region will achieve a gross regional product (GDP) of 1,379.758 billion yuan, an increase of 3.4% over the previous year. In 2020, all 3.089 million poor people in Xinjiang will be lifted out of poverty.
Xinjiang has 55 ethnic groups, mainly inhabited by Han, Uygur, Kazakh, Hui, Mongolian, Kirgiz, Xibe, Tajik, Uzbek, Manchu, Daur, Tatar, Russian and other ethnic groups. It is one of China's five ethnic minority autonomous regions. According to the results of the sixth national census, Xinjiang ranked fifth in the proportion of the population with higher education in 24 provinces and municipalities. Xinjiang will fully implement the 14-year free education policy in southern Xinjiang, promote 14-year free education in other regions, and gradually realize 15-year free education in the region, namely 3 years before school, 6 years in elementary school, 3 years in junior high school, and 3 years in high school.
Xinjiang is located in the hinterland of the Eurasian continent, with a land border of more than 5,600 kilometers. It borders Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, India, and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. It is an important part of the ancient Silk Road in history. The channel is now the only place to pass through the second Asia-Europe Continental Bridge. In the historical development, cultures are blended and blood is connected, and together they have created a glorious civilization. The ancient economic and cultural exchange link between the East and the West-the world-famous Silk Road stretches for more than 5,000 kilometers in Xinjiang, leaving countless natural heritage and cultural relics along the way. There are countless mysteries along this historical site. And magic.
In Xinjiang, there are high mountains and sand sea deposits. The Altai Mountains in the north, the Tianshan Mountains in the middle, and the Kunlun Mountains in the south span east and west. The Tarim Basin and Junggar Basin dominate the north and south. Formed into a landform commonly known as three mountains and two basins, here is rich in natural resources, peculiar landscapes, long history and culture, and strong ethnic customs. It is an important tourist destination in China with extremely rich tourist resources.

SKIING in CHINA? Is it WORTH IT ???
I LOVE SKIING! I grew up skiing and I need my once-a-year ski trip. Since I moved to China in 2017 I located a few ski resorts just north of Beijing. One of them and the one that I keep returning to is Thaiwoo Ski Resort in Chongli, Zhangjiakou.
This area in particular is dry and doesn't snow much but this didn't stop the Chinese to build an amazing resort. Check out the video and let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. Would you ski here?

Altay is a famous ice and snow travel holy place in Xinjiang. It claims to be the origin of human skiing, and there is a strong atmosphere of ice and snow sports in winter. Axing experienced night skiing, climbed to the top of Jiangjun Mountain to see the night view of the city, and ate local specialties such as black mushrooms, Shacong eggs, and freshly baked Nangkeng meat.

Altay region, a region of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is governed by Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Located in the northern part of Xinjiang, the Altai region borders with Russia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia; has a complex and diverse landscape type, with dry and hot summers and severe winters; has a borderline of 1,197 km long and a total area of 118,000 km2. It has 6 counties and 1 city under its jurisdiction; according to the data of the seventh census, the resident population of Altay region was 668,587 as of 00:00 on November 1, 2020.
It is the only region in northwest China bordering Russia, and is an important node city of the Silk Road Economic Belt North Corridor and Xinjiang's participation in the construction of the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor; it has three national land ports; it is a relatively abundant water area in Xinjiang, and is known as the water tower of the northern border; it is one of the six major forest areas in China, and is also identified by the State Council as It is one of the six major forest areas in China and has been identified by the State Council as a water-conserving mountain and grassland ecological function area, known as Jinshan Silver Water, the origin of human skiing and the snow capital of China.
Altay is a Turkic word meaning golden mountain, named because the mountain contains gold, and there is a saying that there are 72 ditches in Altay Mountain, and there is gold in the ditch. The Ertzis River in Altay City is the only river in China that injects into the Arctic Ocean. The Brento Sea in Fuhai County has a water area of 100,000 hectares and produces more than 10 kinds of fish, which is known as the fishing town of the North. The main scenic spots include Kanas Lake Nature Reserve, Burgan Beaver Nature Reserve and Butterfly Gorge.

In part 4 of this series, come join me as I walk through a Uyghur neighborhood where there are basically only Uyghur people living their normal lives. I eat at a local restaurant and savor their authentic dishes and teas. Most excitedly I try to explore another city in Xinjiang as this was about Day 6 into my trip. I had to quarantine for 3 days so it was really my 3rd day in the Autonomous region.

When I was driving from Burqin to Altay City, I saw this massive muslim graveyard shining by the side of the highway. Obviously, I made a layover there and roamed all over it.
It's one of the quietest and loneliest places in Xinjiang. The city has grown up around it over the decades. Yet this place feels like a precious wound, a heartbreak you won't let go of because it hurts too good.

China's Western Wonders -Mysterious Kanas Lake,Xinjiang China
Kanas Lake (Chinese: 喀纳斯湖; pinyin: Kānàsī Hú, Xiao'erjing: كَانَاسِ خٗ; Mongolian: Ханас нуур; Uighur: قاناس كۆلى, USY: Қанас Көли) is a lake in Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, China. The lake is located in a valley in the Altai Mountains, near the very northern tip of Xinjiang and the autonomous region's borders with Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. The lake was formed around 200,000 years ago during the Quaternary period as a result of glacier movement. The crescent moon shaped lake has an estimated water storage capacity of 53.8 billion cubic meters, coupled with an average depth of around 120 meters.
The Kanas River, flowing out of the lake, later merges with the Hemu River to form the Burqin River, which itself discharges into the Irtysh River at Burqin Town, the county seat of Burqin County.
Visiting China's Most Dangerous Road G219 | Xinjiang-Tibet Road of Death
China National Highway 219 (G219) is a highway that runs along the entire western and southern border of the People's Republic of China, from Kom-Kanas Mongolian ethnic township in Xinjiang to Dongxing in Guangxi. At over 10,000 kilometers (6,214 mi) long, it will be the longest National Highway once completed.
As one of the highest motorable roads in the world, the breathtaking scenery of Rutog County also ranks as some of the most inhospitable terrains on the planet. Domar township—a town of concrete blocks and nomad tents—is one of the bleakest and most remote outposts of the People's Liberation Army at the edge of the Aksai Chin. Near the town of Mazar, many trekkers turn off for both the Karakorum range and K2 base camp. Approaching the Xinjiang border, past the final Tibetan settlement of Tsering Daban is a dangerous 5,050-meter-high pass. Tibetan nomads in the area herd both yaks and two-humped camels. Descending through the western Kunlun Shan, the road crosses additional passes of 4,000 and 3,000 meters, and the final pass offers brilliant views of the Taklamakan Desert far below before descending into the Karakax River basin.
