European Destinations of Excellence - Croatia
EDEN is the acronym for European Destination of Excellence, a project promoting sustainable tourism development model across the European Union. The project is based on national competitions of a tourist „destination of excellence for each participating country, which effectively achieves the objective of drawing attention to the values, diversity and common features of European tourist destinations and promotes networking between awarded destinations. The project's target is to enhance and promote the visibility of emerging European destinations under the slogan „Discover the Hidden Treasures of Europe.
The European comission choses a different theme every year, and as Croatia has been participating since the very begining, it has been awarded five destinations of excellence under five different themes.

June 2015 was the time: Getting a rental car in Croatia and making it through three countries in ten days.
We visited Plitvice Lakes, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Korcula, Split and Sukosan in Croatia. Not to forget the beautiful beach days at the Makarska Riviera!
Budva and Kotor were on our Montenegro list. And Bosnia&Herzegovina amazed us with Mostar, Blagaj Tekja, Kravice Falls, Pocitelj and Medugorje.

A Morning in Bjelovar, Croatia
During our Croatia road trip my girlfriend and I spent the night in Bjelovar. It wasn't planned but it turned out that Bjelovar, Croatia is a lovely place to visit!
It's a very small town and since we were staying nearby we decided to explore Bjelovar in the morning before continuing on with our trip.
Bjelovar is the capital city of the region with a population of 40,000 people. Walking around on a summer morning the town felt much smaller and it was a rather quiet and peaceful place to visit.
There is a small old town area in the center of town and a few other buildings and churches to check out. After grabbing breakfast and exploring for an hour we decided to continue on with our trip.
Bjelovar is a great place to visit and I hope to return in the future to spend some more time exploring the town!

Highlights from our recent trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia (a.k.a. King´s Landing from Game of Thrones). What a beautiful city! Three days were definitely not enough. I guess it deserves to be named the ´Pearl of the Adriatic`.

Croatia officially the Republic of Croatia is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, on the Adriatic Sea. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro to the southeast, sharing a maritime border with Italy. Its capital, Zagreb, forms one of the country's primary subdivisions, along with twenty counties. Croatia has an area of 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) and a population of 4.28 million, most of whom are Roman Catholics.

Heute zeigt sich Varaždin in der historischen Kette der mitteleuropäischen Städte seinen Gästen als eine seltene urbane Perle - eine Stadt der Harmonie und Intimität, eine Stadt, die ihre spezifische urbane Identität nicht nur durch die unvergängliche Schönheit der alten Barockarchitektur zeigt, aber auch durch die Wärme seiner schönen Plätze, Straßen und Parks und vor allem durch seinen Reichtum – erhaltene Museumssammlungen.
So hat Varaždin einige der wesentlichen Merkmale des kroatischen „Wien“ als Stadt des Barock, der Musik und der Blumen bewahrt.

Als eine Art Stadtmuseum, aber auch als moderner Sitz der heutigen Diözese und des Landkreises Varaždin und als Kreuzung der Wege aus Mitteleuropa nach Zagreb und an die Adria ist Varaždin ein attraktives Touristenziel. Im Herzen des alten Stadtzentrums spürt jeder Besucher den Geist vergangener Jahrhunderte und die Schönheit des Lebens in unserer Zeit.

Varaždinske Toplice liegt am nordöstlichen Rand von Hrvatski Zagorje, in der grünen Umgebung sanfter Hügel mit Wiesen, Weinbergen, Obstgärten und Wäldern, direkt über dem Tal des Flusses Benja.

Lepoglava:
Wiege der kroatischen Kultur
Lepoglava liegt in einer idyllischen Landschaft, am Fuße des Berges Ivanščica und am Fluss Benja. Lepoglava, oft vergessen oder wenig bekannt, ist für die kroatische Kunst, Kultur, Wissenschaft, Geschichte und Religion von wesentlicher Bedeutung.
Dies ist vor allem den Paulinern zu verdanken, die 1503 in Lepoglava das erste kroatische Gymnasium und 1656 die Philosophische Fakultät und dann die erste kroatische Universität gründeten. Außerdem wurden dort prächtige architektonische Bauten (Pfarrkirche, Kloster) mit reich bemalten Wänden und Ausstattungen (Fresken, Altäre, Orgel, Kirchenmobiliar) errichtet, die teilweise bis heute erhalten sind.
