Turkmenistan formerly also known as Turkmenia, is one of the Turkic states in Central Asia. Turkmenistan is bordered by Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, Uzbekistan to the east and northeast, Kazakhstan to the northwest and the Caspian Sea to the west.
Present-day Turkmenistan covers territory that has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries. In medieval times Merv (today known as Mary) was one of the great cities of the Islamic world, and an important stop on the Silk Road, a large road used for trade with China until the mid-15th century. Annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881, Turkmenistan later figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1924, Turkmenistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (Turkmen SSR); it became independent upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.[5]
Turkmenistan's GDP growth rate of 11% in 2012 comes on the back of several years of sustained high growth, albeit from a very basic undiversified economy powered by export of a single commodity.[6] It possesses the world's fourth largest reserves of natural gas resources.[7] Although it is wealthy in natural resources in certain areas, most of the country is covered by the Karakum (Black Sand) Desert.
Turkmenistan was ruled by President for Life Saparmurat Niyazov (called Türkmenbaşy, Leader of the Turkmens) until his sudden death on 21 December 2006. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow was elected the new president on 11 February 2007. Source:

Road to the Door of Hell - Turkmenistan

This experience is part of my big trip around the world. Ever since my friend Hugh told me about this place, I knew I needed to visit.

After drilling for oil, the camp and rig collapsed into this wide crater. The soviet engineers though it was best to burn the gas off... That was 45 years ago and it has been burning ever since.

Riding through the desert for a days on end, through Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, and finding this giant barbecue was one of the most unique experiences so far.

If you have the chance to visit, do it quick, before somebody kills the fire.

Tashkent sights (Uzbekistan, Central Asia).

More information here:
Tashkent, as it befits the capital of Uzbekistan, is grand and diverse.
Tashkent sights are various. Most of the historical and architectural monuments of the city are located in its Old Town area where evident history stays in harmony with modernity. The city's Oriental bazaars, just like centuries ago, attract visitors with the abundance of juicy fruit and vegetables, delightful aroma of hot flat loaves of bread and samsa pasties... The Oriental bazaar is notable for making anyone visiting it never go back without a purchase.
There are always a lot of cultural events taking place in Tashkent. The city has a large number of theatres, museums, restaurants, nightclubs, and hotels. In hot summers you can easily find a cooling place at a fountain, a shelter in one of the many parks or... in Tashkent metro, which is acknowledged one of the most beautiful in the world.
It will take longer than just a day to see all Tashkent sights, so this short film will help you, taking you on an excursion around the city.
