A Tourist guide to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda

My arrival into the Rwandan capital coincided with the 18th anniversary of the Genocide. I check into the Top Tower Hotel and see the sights, including a city centre walk, a trip on the back of a motorbike taxi, a visit to the Genocide Memorial Centre, and a beer in the Milles de Collines, the hotel made famous by the movie 'Hotel Rwanda'.

Travel Video | East Africa | Rwanda Kigali - City of 1000 Hills | Places to Visit

Hey guyz!

So recently i travelled to East Africa and many of you have been asking about my travel route and destinations visited. Here's a little sneak peek!

Kigali is a thriving African city known as the city of 1000 hills and notable for its cleanliness, greenery orderliness, and hospitality.

Places Visited:

1. Lake Muhazi | Jambo Beach - Lake Muhazi is a Kinyarwanda name and this thin shallow lake is located along the eastern side of Rwanda. It takes a two and a half hour drive distance from Kigali. It's also a few kilometres away from the Uganda border of Kagitumba and the Tanzanian border of Kisumu.
Most people visit Muhazi to experience the famous Jambo Beach Restaurant that is on the shores of the Lake.

2. Pili Pili Bar & Restaurant - Even though the food and service are both really good, the best thing about Pili Pili is the view and the general atmosphere of the place taking in what seems like a panoramic view of the entire city. It’s probably the best place in Kigali for a full view of the sunset in the giant sky. It’s reasonably priced, they have a big screen for sports, and it’s all wrapped up into the package of an interesting building with nice service.

3. Bambino Super City - Bambino is a place of beauty, tranquility and comfort. As it is the only amusement park found in Rwanda, Bambino is home to a wide range of exciting rides for both kids and adults and is about 22km from the city centre.

4. Fazenda Sengha - Fazenda is an outdoor recreational center on the outskirts of Kigali. Perched at the top of Mt. Kigali with sweeping views, this ranch has horseback riding, zip lines, trail ride, archery & trampolines.

5. Gisenyi - Gisenyi is about a three hours drive, and is perfect for a weekend get-away. The city features a resort on the shores of Lake Kivu, with several hotels and three sandy beaches. The area is also known for water sports.

Other places i visited not captured in the video:

6. Kigali Convention Centre - It is just 5 kilometers from the bustling city center and Kigali International Airport. The complex’s egg-shaped dome and ribbon-striped hotel are a familiar sight to Kigali residents and a point of pride for the city.

7. Kigali Heights Shopping Mall - Kigali's premier mixed-use development offering the country's first Grade A offices and world-class retail experience.

8. Genocide Memorial Museum - Giant wall displays, archival documents, photos, video footage and weapons encased in glass, the indoor exhibit sheds light on the Rwandan genocide, as well its pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial roots.

9. Piazza Bar - The Piazza Bar on the roof of the Convention Centre was actually a nice surprise! It is right underneath the brightly lit dome. There’s also an absolutely huge big screen TV (probably the largest in the city) that was playing football at first and then moved on to music videos.

10. Peoples Bar - This is a premier night spot in Kigali and much of its reputation derives from the fact that it’s the only bar that operates seven days a week.

11. Zaaffran - There are a few excellent Indian restaurants in Kigali and Zaaffran, is the pick of the lot. It specializes in Authentic Indian food.

12. Casino Kigali - It’s relaxed, the staff are nice and it’s just something different to do on a night out with a group of friends.

Rwanda, officially the Republic of Rwanda (Kinyarwanda: Repubulika y'u Rwanda; French: République du Rwanda), is a sovereign state in central and east Africa. Located a few degrees south of the Equator, Rwanda is bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. All of Rwanda is at high elevation, with a geography dominated by mountains in the west, savanna in the east, and numerous lakes throughout the country. The climate is temperate to subtropical, with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons every year.
The population is young and predominantly rural, with a density among the highest in Africa. Rwandans form three groups: the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. The Twa are a forest-dwelling pygmy people who descend from Rwanda's earliest inhabitants, but scholars disagree on the origins of and differences between the Hutu and Tutsi; some believe that they are derived from former social castes, while others view them as being races or tribes. Christianity is the largest religion in the country, and the principal language is Kinyarwanda, which is spoken by most Rwandans. Rwanda has a presidential system of government. The president is Paul Kagame of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), who took office in 2000. Rwanda has low corruption compared with neighbouring countries, but human rights organisations allege suppression of opposition groups, intimidation, and restrictions on freedom of speech. The country has been governed by a strict administrative hierarchy since precolonial times; there are five provinces, which are delineated by borders drawn in 2006.
Hunter gatherers settled the territory in the stone and iron ages, followed later by Bantu settlers. The population coalesced, first into clans and then into kingdoms. The Kingdom of Rwanda dominated from the mid-eighteenth century, with the Tutsi kings conquering others militarily, centralising power, and later enacting anti-Hutu policies. Germany colonised Rwanda in 1884, followed by Belgium, which invaded in 1916 during World War I. Both European nations ruled through the kings and perpetuated pro-Tutsi policy. The Hutu population revolted in 1959, massacring a large number of Tutsi and ultimately establishing an independent Hutu-dominated state in 1962. The Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front launched a civil war in 1990, which was followed by the 1994 genocide, in which Hutu extremists killed an estimated 500,000 to 1 million Tutsi and moderate Hutu. The RPF ended the genocide with a military victory.
Rwanda's economy suffered heavily during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, but has since strengthened. The economy is based mostly on subsistence agriculture. Coffee and tea are the major cash crops for export. Tourism is a fast-growing sector and is now the country's leading foreign exchange earner; Rwanda is one of only two countries in which mountain gorillas can be visited safely, and visitors are prepared to pay high prices for gorilla tracking permits. Music and dance are an integral part of Rwandan culture, particularly drums and the highly choreographed intore dance. Traditional arts and crafts are produced throughout the country, including imigongo, a unique cow dung art. Source:

8 INCREDIBLE things to do in Kigali for under 15 USD

Kigali, Rwanda, is definitely one of the cleanest cities in Africa, if not the cleanest. A couple decades ago, most people had written Rwanda off but a visit to the country's capital opened my eyes to this gem! The city is set up on a landscape of hills hence the tag-name 'The City of A Thousand Hills' which makes for splendid viewing especially at night when the lights give the illusion of a city sprinkled by starlight. I spent a couple of days in Kigali and came up with 8 things anyone can do in Kigali under 15 USD that include:

- A motari city ride.
- Eating 'akabenz' which is a popular dish among the locals.
- Renting a mushanana; cultural dress for locals.
- Visiting the INEMA Arts Center
Among many other enjoyable activities guaranteed to make you experience and enjoy the Rwandese way of life. Have you ever been to Kigali? Is it on your travel bucketlist?

Cleanest City in Africa? KIGALI, RWANDA

You will not believe how clean KIGALI, RWANDA is until you watch this video. I am beyond shocked -- as I had no idea it was this clean and safe until coming here!!

For a brief history lesson - Back in 1994, Rwanda suffered one of the bloodiest genocides in modern history. Within 100 days (April 7 - mid July), roughly 20% of the population, or 1 million people, were slaughtered due to tribal conflicts of land ownership. It was devastating, and feels realistic to me when I learn about it because it happened within my lifetime.

Fast forward 24 years, and the capital of Kigali has done a remarkable job reconstructing and rebuilding itself to be a leading African city in terms of modernity, safety, cleanliness and tech (the wifi here is the strongest I've seen on the continent!)

The streets are so clean here in Rwanda that I could eat off them... I'm being serious! I am having flashbacks to walking around Singapore - especially when I went to a swanky rooftop infinity pool over looking the city (reminds me exactly of the Marina Bay Sands).

Have you ever been to Kigali? Or Rwanda? Do you agree with me?

With over 280 bird and 13 primate species and spreading over 1000 square kilometres, Nyungwe National Park is one of the most acclaimed biodiversity rainforests in Africa. Notwithstanding the various attractions in the park, the Canopy Walkway remains one of the best places to experience as it offers a magnificent view of the canopy and it gives a great site for bird-watching.The Canopy walk is suspended at a height of about 60m above the ground and goes over giant trees. While the beauty of Nyungwe National Park remains unknown to many, efforts are being made to attract many tourists.

Kigali , the beauty of Rwanda

Not only is Kigali beautiful, but it is also the clean and safe capital city in Africa . The fact that it is so green and hilly adds to the aesthetic allure of the place. It is not surprising that Kigali is considered to be one of the most liveable cities in Africa. With impressive urban development plans and efficiency in road construction, Kigali has become a well organised and structured city that gives its visitors and inhabitants a feeling of peacefulness and serenity. Nothing beats the views that you get from the top of the numerous beautiful hills.

Thanks to Yves from Everywhere Travel Tours:

Gisenyi is a beautiful town on the shores of Lake in Rwanda. The lake is incredible, surrounded by lush green mountains. It’s a perfect place in Rwanda to spend some time relaxing, learning about the culture, and eating. One of the main Rwandan foods to eat at Lake Kivu is sambaza, a fish similar to sardines.

To begin this food and cultural tour of Gisenyi, Lake Kivu, we first stopped off at the local market, and took a boat ride. They were not allowed to fish on that day to control the fishing, but the fishermen gave us a quick lesson on how they fish, and took us out on a boat just to show us. It was one of the highlights of the day for me. The fishing boats are so peaceful and the rowing songs were amazing.

After having a quick snack of some deep fried sambaza, which were delicious, we continued on to one of the biggest fresh markets in Gisenyi. We saw ladies pounding cassava leaves, and stopped to eat some fruit. The tree tomatoes in Rwanda by the way are delicious.

Ibyiwacu Restaurant - Next we ate a quick Rwandan food lunch at a local restaurant. Buffets are very common in Rwanda, you choose all your different starches, with beans, and a couple of different sauces, and you can choose if you want meat or without meal. Overall, very good and fresh food, a little plain, but good with some extra chili sauce.
Price - 1,500 RWF ($1.70) per person

Next we headed to a local home for a home cooked African meal, including some of the local ingredients commonly used in the culture around Lake Kivu. Sambaza are a staple, but since we already had some fried, they made a peanut (groundnut) stew with the fish, and also made some vegetable dishes, with rice, and a number of other starches.

The sambaza with peanut sauce was the BEST meal of my entire trip to Rwanda.
