Ireland's 13 Best Attractions for Travelers

Ireland's 13 Best Attractions for Travelers (Lonely Planet)

13. Ring of Kerry
County Kerry is famous throughout the world for its natural beauty, and the Ring of Kerry is the most common tourist route for seeing it. There are relatively few historic sites along the route, though those that are there are worth seeing.

12. Cork City
Cork is situated on the banks of the River Lee in the south of the country. Cork is the anglicised version of the Irish word Corcaigh, which means marsh. The city centre was originally built on marshland and boats were able to navigate into the channels which separated the many islands.

11. Links Golf
If Scotland is the home of golf, then Ireland is where golf goes on holiday. And the best vacation spots are along the sea, where the country's collection of seaside links are dotted in a steady string along virtually the entire Irish coastline, each more revealed than carved in the undulating, marram-grass-covered landscapes.

10. Rock of Cashel
Reputedly the site of the conversion of Aenghus the King of Munster by St. Patrick in the 5th century AD. Long before the Norman invasion The Rock of Cashel was the seat of the High Kings of Munster.

9. Brú na Bóinne
Brú na Bóinne is an internationally important complex of Neolithic chamber tombs, standing stones, henges and other prehistoric enclosures located in a wide meander of the River Boyne in Ireland. The site is a complex of Neolithic mounds, chamber tombs, standing stones, henges and other prehistoric enclosures, some dating from as early as 35th century BC - 32nd century BC.

8. Walking and Hiking
Ireland is best explored on foot, whether you opt for a gentle afternoon stroll along a canal towpath or take on the challenge of any of the 31 waymarked long-distance routes. There are coastal walks and mountain hikes; you can explore towns and villages along the way or steer clear of civilisation by traipsing along lonely moorland and across barren bogs.

7. Galway City
Galway, known as the City of the Tribes is an important tourist centre and a gateway to the scenic areas of the county. Beginning in the 15th century, Galway was ruled by tribes, as the leading fourteen families were called. The tribes built many castles throughout County Galway.

6. Dingle Peninsula
The Dingle Peninsula is the smaller and northernmost of the two peninsulas that make up County Kerry, in Southwest Ireland. The landscape is wild and beautiful from the eastern spine of the peninsula in the steep Slieve Mish to the western end where the land breaks into a scattering of uninhabited and dramatic islands and cliffs and beaches alternate around the coast.

5. Glendalough
Glendalough is a historically important monastery & village in County Wicklow in Ireland. Glendalough lies roughly 90 minutes south of Dublin City by car. Glendalough is a historic site, whose Gaelic name translates to valley of the two lakes.

4. Traditional Music
Western Europe's most vibrant folk music is Irish traditional music, which may have earned worldwide fame thanks to the likes of Riverdance but is best expressed in a more sedate setting, usually an old-fashioned pub.

3. Connemara
Connemara is the peninsula of Western Galway. It has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its barren windswept landscape is compelling and inspiring. The blanket bog covering the region houses some beautiful and varied flora, and provides a contrast to the more green and fertile land of the midlands and the south.

2. Dublin
Dublin's vibrancy, nightlife and tourist attractions are world renowned and it's the most popular entry point for international visitors to Ireland. As a city, it is disproportionately large for the size of the country with a population of 1.8 million in the Greater Dublin Region; nearly half of the Republic's population lives in this metropolitan area.

1. The Pub
Every town and hamlet has at least one: no matter where you go, you'll find that the social heart of the country beats loudest in the pub, still the best place to discover what makes the country tick. In suitable surroundings -- whether a quiet traditional pub with flagstone floors and a large peat fire or a more modern bar with flashing lights and music -- take a moment or an evening to listen for that beating heart... and drink some decent beer in the process.

10 Things NOT To Do in Ireland

Get more Tips here!
Today we're going to talk about Ireland and what not to do there!
1. Don't Say “Top of the Morning”
No one uses it and it's corny and you'll stand out like a tourist!

2. Don't Use A Phony Irish Accent
The locals hate it!

3. Don't Talk About Leprechauns
The Irish find this tiresome and boring, yet another thing that would make anyone stand out like a tourist.

4. Don't Brag That You’re 100% Irish
Even if both sides of your family hail from Ireland, if you’re traveling from the US, you’d be considered Irish-American.

5. Don't Just Visit Dublin
You'll miss all the lush green countryside! You’ll definitely want to explore rural areas, other cities and landmarks such as Galway, Belfast, Killarney National Park, Doolin and the Cliffs of Moher.

6. Don't Order Corned Beef and Cabbage
This is not the national dish of Ireland. It was a creation made up by Americans and is something they eat on St. Patrick’s Day. In Ireland this meal doesn't really exist, if you do find it on a menu, you can be sure its a restaurant that caters to tourists.

7. Don’t Skip Your Round
In Irish pubs it’s a common practice to order drinks in rounds. For example, if you’re with a group of four people, everyone in the group takes turns buying a round of drinks.

8. Don't Compare Ireland to Home
Not only is this kind of rude, but locals find it very annoying to constantly hear how things like service, food, culture, people, etc. compare to your home country.

But there are lots of differences, like the way everyone waves to you in the car. I don't know you, why are you waving?

9. Don't Avoid the Finger Twitch
While driving on country roads, it's common practice to raise your hand or finger from the steering wheel when you pass someone. It’s a polite way of saying hello to oncoming drivers, even if the respective drivers do not know each other.

25 things to do in Dublin Travel Guide

So this week we're excited to be exploring Dublin and we're planning to spend an entire week here. This video is going to highlight 25 things to do around the city. Dublin is where most trips in Ireland begin, so before seeing the rest of the country, Audrey and I spent a whole week getting to know the capital. When the weather cooperated we walked around the city, toured Trinity College, and visited the botanical gardens, and when it poured rain as it often does in this part of the world, we just popped into a pub for some Irish stew and a pint of Guinness. The following video will show you a few of the different things to do in Dublin, Ireland.

Our visit Dublin travel guide covers some of the top attractions including the best in arts, entertainment, museums, nightlife and restaurants. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Dublin city guide.

25 things to do in Dublin Ireland | Top Attractions Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Trinity College was founded in 1592 and it is the oldest university in Ireland. The campus is open to visitors interested in touring the grounds, and you'll also get to hear some fascinating stories of famous students, including the likes of Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, and Bram Stoker.

The Guinness Storehouse is Dublin's most popular attraction, and it's a must-visit for beer lovers. The Storehouse covers seven floors surrounding a glass atrium shaped like a pint of Guinness. Inside you'll also find a copy of the 9,000 year lease signed by Arthur Guinness on the brewery site - they won't be going anywhere for a while!

Grafton Street is one of the main shopping areas in Dublin. You're likely to find lots of musicians, buskers, and performers along here, plus you get a good vantage point of The Spire.

Prior to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery, Irish Catholics had no place of their own to bury their dead. This burial ground gave both Irish Catholics and Protestants a place where they could give their dead dignified burial, and it has since become the resting place for people of all religions and non religions.

Experience Gaelic Games is a place where you can come and try traditional Irish sports like hurling and Gaelic football.

The Old Jameson Distillery is the original site where Jameson Irish Whiskey was distilled until 1971. It is now a visitor centre that offers both guided tours and whiskey tastings.

Temple Bar is an area known for its lively nightlife. Located on the southbank of the River Liffey, you'll find all sorts of pubs playing live music once the sun goes down. There's also one pub in Temple Bar, called The Temple Bar, but don't let that confuse you.

And that's a wrap for our time in Dublin! We hope you enjoyed this video and that it gave you a few ideas of what the city has to offer. As always, if you have any other suggestions of fun things to do in Dublin as a visitor, feel free to share them in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels!

This is part of our Travel in Ireland series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Irish culture, Irish foods & Irish cuisine.
