Travelling around Gambia

The smiling coast, Gambia, is the smallest country in Africa. The country has much more than sun and sand to offer. A trip to Gambia is a real adventure and helps you exploring new cultures.

We tried our new drone on a very first day trip of 2017. We went to Eastbourne in the south of England.

Trip to GEORGETOWN IN THE GAMBIA

Top 10 Largest Cities or Towns of The Gambia

Thanks for watching....
The Gambia (Listeni/ˈɡæmbiə/; officially the Republic of the Gambia and often called simply Gambia) is a country in West Africa. It is surrounded by Senegal, apart from a short strip of Atlantic coastline at its western end. It is the smallest country on mainland Africa.

The country is situated on either side of the Gambia River, the nation's namesake, which flows through the country's centre and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Its area is 10,689 square kilometres (4,127 sq mi) with a population of 1,882,450 at the 15 April 2013 Census (provisional). Banjul is the Gambian capital, but the largest cities are Serekunda and Brikama.

The Gambia shares historical roots with many other West African nations in the slave trade, which was the key factor in the placing and keeping of a colony on the Gambia River, first by the Portuguese, during which era it was La Gambia, and later by the British. On 18 February 1965, The Gambia gained independence from the United Kingdom and joined the Commonwealth of Nations as Republic of the Gambia. It withdrew from the British Commonwealth in October 2013. Since gaining independence, Gambia has enjoyed relative political stability, with the exception of a brief period of military rule in 1994.

Due to the fertile land of the country, the economy is dominated by farming, fishing, and tourism. About a third of the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day.

Arab traders provided the first written accounts of the Gambia area in the ninth and tenth centuries. During the tenth century, Muslim merchants and scholars established communities in several West African commercial centres. Both groups established trans-Saharan trade routes, leading to a large trade in slaves, gold, ivory (exports) and manufactured goods (imports).

By the eleventh or twelfth century, the rulers of kingdoms such as Takrur (a monarchy centred on the Senegal River just to the north), ancient Ghana and Gao, had converted to Islam and had appointed Muslims who were literate in the Arabic language as courtiers. At the beginning of the fourteenth century, most of what is today called Gambia was part of the Mali Empire. The Portuguese reached this area by sea in the mid-fifteenth century, and they began to dominate overseas trade.

In 1588, the claimant to the Portuguese throne, António, Prior of Crato, sold exclusive trade rights on the Gambia River to English merchants. Letters patent from Queen Elizabeth I confirmed the grant. In 1618, King James I of England granted a charter to an English company for trade with the Gambia and the Gold Coast (now Ghana). Between 1651 and 1661 some parts of the Gambia were under Courland's rule, and had been bought by Prince Jacob Kettler, who was a Polish-Lithuanian vassal.

During the late 17th century and throughout the 18th century, the British Empire and the French Empire struggled continually for political and commercial supremacy in the regions of the Senegal River and the Gambia River. The British Empire occupied the Gambia when an expedition led by Augustus Keppel landed there—following the Capture of Senegal in 1758. The 1783 First Treaty of Versailles gave Great Britain possession of the Gambia River, but the French retained a tiny enclave at Albreda on the river's north bank. This was finally ceded to the United Kingdom in 1856.

As many as three million slaves may have been taken from this general region during the three centuries that the transatlantic slave trade operated. It is not known how many slaves were taken by inter-tribal wars or Muslim traders before the transatlantic slave trade began. Most of those taken were sold by other Africans to Europeans; others were prisoners of inter-tribal wars; some were victims sold because of unpaid debts; and others were simply victims of kidnapping.

Traders initially sent slaves to Europe to work as servants until the market for labour expanded in the West Indies and North America in the eighteenth century. In 1807, the United Kingdom abolished the slave trade throughout its empire. It also tried, unsuccessfully, to end the slave trade in the Gambia. Slave ships intercepted by the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron in the Atlantic were also returned to the Gambia, with liberated slaves released on MacCarthy Island far up the Gambia River where they were expected to establish new lives. The British established the military post of Bathurst (now Banjul) in 1816. In the ensuing years, Banjul was at times under the jurisdiction of the British Governor General in Sierra Leone. In 1888, the Gambia became a separate colony.

10 Best Destinations to Visit in Djibouti

Though it occupies a tiny corner in Northern Africa, Djibouti has copious amounts of beauty and sites that you really can’t believe unless you’ve seen them for yourself. Few places have such a variety of landscapes – like volcanoes, sinking plains, limestone chimneys with steam coming from the top, salt lakes, grand canyons, and gorgeous plateaus.
For those that love outdoor adventure, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy here. Enjoy snorkelling with the sharks, diving, kite surfing, and hiking. The country isn’t overly developed outside of the capital so spending time here makes for the perfect eco-travel experience as you get a peek of ancient nomadic life.

Banjul in Gambia, capital, vacation destination and operator business market

Banjul is the second largest city in and capital of Gambia. The city is on an island, which has constrained its size - population is only 40,000. Consequently much of the population now is based on the mainland between the airport and the city. The main tourist and business centres are around Bakau, Fajara, Kotu and Serrekunda.
Banjul has become very popular as a package holiday destination with British and other European visitors. Travel company 'The Gambia Experience' has been the market leader, but other operators are increasing their offerings too.

The 10 best value holiday destinations 2016

1. Vietnam
Now a well-established stop on the Southeast Asia trail, it’s still possible to find beds for £3.50 a night in the country’s largest city, bustling Ho Chi Minh. Try the friendly Long Hostel, off tourist centre Pham Ngu Lao Street, and you can get your own room with breakfast for a fiver! With hearty bowls of delicious phở - chicken or beef noodle soup - for 60p and a pint of local beer costing no more than 30p, experience some of Vietnam’s rich culture and history for pennies.
What's the best place to visit in Vietnam?
Hoi An, an old UNESCO World Heritage port on the river, set with beautiful Chinese merchant's houses. Seethe hop-on, hop-off tourist buses to get there from Hanoi or HCMC. Check out our guide for more amazing places to visit in Vietnam.
What's the best beach?
Mui Ne, three and a half hours by train from Ho Chi Minh.
Top things to do in Vietnam?
Take a motorbike ride. Hire an official 'Easy Rider' driver to experience Vietnam's central highlands, or if you're super-confident, rent your own wheels from $10 per day (less if you rent for longer) and take a section of the old Viet Cong supply route, the Ho Chi Minh highway, that runs between HCMC and Hanoi.
2. Bali, Indonesia
With the British pound growing stronger against the Indonesian rupiah, Bali is a great value long-haul option. It's just one of Indonesia’s stunning islands, packed with glittering temples, walkable volcanoes and a surfer's paradise around the sugary coastline. You'll also find private accommodation from £5 a night, as well as affordable ‘genuine fake’ designer goods for the tightest traveller’s budget in the local markets.
What's the best place to visit in Bali?
Cultural centre Ubud, for art on every street corner, and the best place to see traditional Balinese dancing (shows most evenings at Ubud Palace, 7.30pm).
What's the best beach?
Uluwatu beach, for sand, surf and a stunning temple perched right on the cliffs.
Top things to do in Bali?
Surf. If you're a newbie, try Kuta for cheap board rentals, lessons and a backpacker's party heaven. Go further south on the Bukit peninsula to find quieter spots for improvers, like Balangan.
3. Gambia
Although The Gambia is the smallest country in (mainland) Africa, you’ll certainly find big savings here. The standard fare on a taxi is about 90p and you can pay just £1 for the chance to get up close to a crocodile at Kachikally Sacred Crocodile Pool or the monkeys at Bijilo Forest Park (both within a short drive of the main tourist area of Kololi on the coast). Take a break at Sanyang Beach, where you’ll find the most affordable accommodation - The Flowerlodge is just 11 kilometres from Banjul airport, with a pool and free bicycle hire from £15 for a double room.
What's the best place to visit in Gambia?
Serrekunda for craft markets as cheap as they are cheerful (get those haggling skills at the ready!)
What's the best beach?
Bijilo, for secluded sands and relief from beach hawkers.
Top things to do in Gambia?
Relax! The pace of life slows right down as soon as you step off the plane, so enjoy a beer with the sunset or grab a luxury massage at the Coco Ocean Resort & Spa in Bijilo, for a fraction of the price you would pay back home (think £20 upwards).

4. Bulgaria
With cheap flights from the UK to Bulgaria’s Black Sea, this popular holiday destination offers plenty of bargains. Sunny Beach pretty much does what it says on the label, a seaside resort made for relaxing and working on your tan without spending more than £20 a day. And yes, the drink is budget-priced, too - less than £1 for local draught beer.
What's the best place to visit in Bulgaria?
Sofia, for its eclectic collection of churches and national symbol, Aleksander Nevski Cathedral.
What's the best beach?
Cacao Beach, in the Sunny Beach Resort, famous for its lively summer DJ sets.
Top things to do in Bulgaria?
Ski. Yep along with hitting the beach, you can ski in the summer here (well, spring). Bulgaria is great budget ski destination, and its mountain resort, Bansko, operates a generous ski season lasting from December until mid-May.
