Top 10 Surprising Places In Colombia You Must Visit

Colombia will be THE country to visit in the following years. FARC have signed a peace agreement, the government is investing a lot in tourism, and the kindness of the Colombians is exemplary. For my first time in Medellin, three people stopped at the same time to help me when I was looking on my city map.

As a result, Every traveler who went to Colombia has fallen in love with. Me, my best friend, my ex-girlfriend and soon my GrandMa – For now, she is still thinking that Colombians are all living naked in the jungle with AK-47. Stop watching the TV GrandMa!

But I have to tell you something. Colombia is Massive! Traveling all over the country in 3 weeks is impossible. Read below the 10 Surprising places in Colombia you must visit one day.

1. Punta Gallinas, La Guajira
There are two deserts in Colombia. By going to Punta Gallinas (La Guajira desert), you can go to the Northernmost point of South America. The contrast between the yellowish of the rocks and the blue of the ocean is astounding. It’s quite an adventure to arrive there, but it is what makes it unique.

2. Tayrona National Park, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta
Tayrona National Park is one of the most famous places in Colombia. It’s easy to access, and you don’t need a guide to visit it. Walk through a lush vegetation and try to observe the howler monkeys in the intense green of the canopy. In the end, you arrive at an amazing beach surrounded by massive boulders. It can be crowded during the weekends and the Colombian holidays.

3. Isla Mucura, San Bernardo Archipelago
There is not only Cartagena and Tayrona Park on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Isla Mucura is only 3 hours away from the Walled city. It’s one of the ten islands that make the San Bernardo Archipelago. Different blue water, palm trees, coconuts, sun, and rum will be your daily routine. This paradise is accessible, cheap and not touristy. You should enjoy it before it’s too late. Don’t forget to visit Isla Tintipan and Santa Cruz (The most densely populated place on earth!!!)

4. Capurgana, Darien Gap
Capurgana in Colombia is a small town in the Darien Gap near the border with Panama. There are no car and only a few scooters. And the reason why is pretty simple. There is no road! Your only way to arrive at Capurgana is to fly in a tiny plane – You can almost touch both sides if you hold out your arms – or take a bumpy boat.

But the inhabitants managed to get speakers for everyone. Be ready to listen to some Vallenato music all day long! Spend your days between waterfalls, natural swimming pools, beaches, snorkeling, and napping.
5. Jardin, Antioquia
Jardin is a lovely colorful colonial town in Colombia with a massive church in the department of Antioquia. There are many waterfalls and horse ridings activities to do around. It’s only 3h30 away from Medellin by public transport, and It will be a perfect stop to have some rest after the crazy nights you might have spent in the city of eternal spring. I advise you to imitate the locals. Grab a seat on the main square, order a coffee with a cookie, and enjoy the fresh air and the sunlight on your skin.

6. Medellin, Antioquia
Everyone loves Medellin. It’s a perfect city for party lovers, digital nomads, family, etc. The inhabitants are more than friendly, and it can be almost disturbing at the beginning – I’m from France, and I’m not used to people smiling at me all the time. Hang out in the trendy district Poblado, dance some salsa a Thursday night in Laureles and assist to a football game in the stadium Atanasio Girardot. Don’t be a spectator in Medellin. You have to live the city! It’s one of the best city in Colombia!

7. Valle de Cocora, Salento
Salento is similar to Jardin. It’s a colorful colonial town in the middle of the coffee region. There are fincas (farms) all around you can visit. But there is one particular thing that makes Salento one of the highlight in Colombia. From the main square, you can take a jeep to visit Valle de Cocora. It’s an incredible protected area in Los Nevados where there are the tallest wax palms in the world (up to 60 m!). You will love the 5-6 hours hike in the park.

8. Cano Cristales, La Macarena
Nature can be surprising, and it’s often the case in Colombia. Caño Cristales is an unreal river of 5 colors. You can’t even believe it until you watch pictures and videos on the internet. Just after the raining season, a particular plant called Macarenia Clavigera, which is growing in the river, turns red because of the sun from September to November. The result is astonishing. You need to arrive at La Macarena first then book a tour if you wish to visit Caño Cristales.

Travel Vlog: Things To Do In Bogotá, Colombia!

We arrived in Bogotá with no expectations and hardly any knowledge about the place. We knew we would meet local people who would be able to give us the best advice on things to do in Bogotá and that's exactly what happened!

Unfortunately, we only only had 24 hours in Bogotá so we struggled trying to squeeze everything in that our Airbnb host had recommended. We tried our best though and thoroughly enjoyed the city while doing so!

10 Things To Do In Cartagena | Places to Visit in Cartagena | Things To Do in Cartagena 2018

Cartagena is the habanero of Caribbean beach cities: so spicy!

This video is part of our YouTube experiment: can anyone become a successful YouTuber? Subscribe toour channel by clicking the link ►

Shot on the Canon G7X with obviously no use of a tripod, steadycam, crane or anything. It's barely handheld.

Now back to Cartagena, here are some more tips:

1)Walk The Old City
There are three main neighbourhoods in old Cartagena: Centro, San Diego, and Getsemani. Walk every street (and we mean EVERY street) by foot. Morning and evenings are the best time for exploring.

2) Get To Getsemani
Real people live in this old neighbourhood, which is what makes it more alive than Centro or San Diego. Street art = worth an afternoon. Go back to the Plaza de Trinidad at night.

3) Museums
We went to the (free) Museo de Oro and the Palacio de la Inqusicion.

4) Eat
Crazy fruits you should try: lulo, zapote, maracuya, granadilla, caimito, guanabana, and mamoncillo. Don’t want to buy from streetcarts? Try them as juices. Other meals: seafood is king in Cartagena and ceviche some of the best we’ve had. Green plantain chips or fried in a mash are a must try.

5) Beaches
Bocagrande is right in the heart of the city, but the water isn’t great. So we went to Isla del Encanto, which was very expensive, but private and guarded so you don’t have to worry about your belongings. Charter a private boat to the Islas de Rosario if you want a customized trip.

6) Sunset on the Wall
Iconic Cartagena experience? You got it. Cafe del Mar is a good place to sit, or just buy a couple beers from the wall vendors and claim your own piece of wall. Drinking in public is legal in Cartagena.

7) La Popa
There’s a convent on top. Because this is the highest part of the city, you get great views. Do not try to walk up the hill. Take a cab or a Chiva Bus.

8) Castillo de San Felipe
Yup. It’s a real castle and it’s f*cking hot in the day, so go right when it opens in the morning. There’s a giant flag at the very top.

9) Las Palenqueras
The fruit ladies are everywhere! Don’t be a dick: buy something or tip them for a photo.

10) Bocagrande
This was our last stop in the city - it’s like Miami Beach meets Puerto Vallarta.

Colombia Travel Guide (HD)

Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide
Colombia - Twice the size of France, and with a diversity of landscapes and cultures that would be hard to find even in countries five times its size, Colombia should by all rights be one of the world's top travel destinations.

Pick a climate, and it's yours—if you find the light jacket weather of Bogotá cold, drive an hour down through the mountains and sunbathe next to the pool of your rented hacienda. If you don't want to sit still, head off into the Amazon or any of the country's other many inland jungles, snow-capped volcanoes, rocky deserts, endless plains, lush valleys, coffee plantations, alpine lakes, deserted beaches.

For culture, intellectual Bogotá might lead the rest of Latin America in experimental theater, indie-rock, and just sheer volume of bookstores, but you could also get a completely alien education in an Amazonian malocca, or you could delve into the huge Latin music scene of salsa and cumbia, with the most exciting dance display being the enormous Carnival of Barranquilla.

For history, wander the narrow streets of South America's original capital in Bogotá, check out old Spanish colonial provincial retreats like Villa de Leyva, trek through the thick jungle-covered mountains of the northeast to the Lost City of the Tayrona Indians. Walk the walls of Cartagena's achingly beautiful old city, looking over the fortified ramparts upon which the colonial history of South America pivoted.

For nightlife, hot Cali is today's world capital of salsa, claiming that competitive distinction even over Colombia's other vibrant big city party scenes, which keep the music going long into the small hours of the morning.

For dining, you'll find everything from the ubiquitous cheap, delicious Colombian home-style meals to world-class upscale and modern culinary arts in the big cities, with cuisines from all corners of the world represented.

And for relaxing, there are gorgeous tropical beaches along Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts, but you can find even more laidback and peaceful retreats on the idyllic and unspoilt Caribbean island of Providencia.

The political violence has subsided substantially throughout the majority of the country and savvy travelers have already flocked here from around the world—come before everyone else catches on!

See in Colombia
==============
Much of Colombia is in the Andes, which means there is very nice mountainous scenery to be found. On the other hand, there are also nice beaches to be found in the lowlands. The altitude of some peaks mean that snow can be seen even though they lie in the tropics.

Do in Colombia
=============
There are a lot of things to do in Colombia, and you can find parties and celebrations wherever you go. Colombians especially love to dance, and if you don't know how, they'll happily teach you. Colombia is known for its exciting night life.

There are many groups and agencies offering eco-tourism and it is very usual to find trekking plans (locally named 'caminatas' or 'excursiones') on weekend; many groups (named 'caminantes') offers cheaper one day excursion, special trips (on long weekends or during periods of vacation time (January, Holy Week, July, August, October, December) to different places in the country. Some recommended groups based out of Bogotá are: Viajar y Vivir, Fundación Sal Si Puedes, Caminantes del Retorno; there are many other. Patianchos in Medellín; Rastros in Bucaramanga. They usually offer guidance and transportation to the place; on long trips include lodging and other services. The recommendation is asking if the guide has the official certification.

Top 10 Best Places to Visit in Colombia !! Tourist Attractions in Colombia

Top 10 Best Places to Visit in Colombia !! Tourist Attractions in Colombia

Colombia has something that will please most travelers, from sandy beaches of the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, to the Andes Mountains and the Amazon rainforests. Its heritage reflects the culture of its indigenous peoples as well as the Spanish who began settling here in the early 15th century. A couple of decades or so ago, Colombia was not on the tourist map because it was not a safe place to visit. However, the government is working hard to change that image, making it safer for travelers to enjoy the many features Colombia offers. An overview of the best places to visit in Colombia:

10. Popayan
Popayan is one of Colombia’s most impressive colonial cities. Located in southwestern Colombia, it is sometimes called the “Ciudad Blanca” (White City) because its buildings are chalk-white. Founded in 1537, its mild climate in the Valle de Cauca quickly attracted wealthy Spanish families who built mansions, schools, churches and monasteries. The city is famous for its Maundy Thursday procession as well as its nightlife.

9. Medellin

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Medellín was considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, home to Colombia’s infamous cocaine cartel. But when drug lord Pablo Escobar was snuffed out in 1993, Medellín began to bury its troubled past and rebounded tremendously. These days, the increasing number of tourist who come here find an inviting, modern city with one of the country’s best climates.

8. San Andres y Providencia

San Andrés and Providencia Archipelago are two island groups that are located closer to Nicaragua than Colombia in the Caribbean. San Andres is the largest island, and also the capital. Providence Island was initially settled by English Puritans who used slave labor on their plantations and took up privateering. White sand beaches and palm trees are San Andres’ best features.

7. San Agustin

San Agustin is a laidback little town surrounded by awesome landscapes and the remains of a forgotten civilization. One of the most intriguing ancient sites in Colombia, the archeological park of San Agustin is home to more than 500 monoliths, statues, petroglyphs and sarcophagi. Most of the stone carvings at San Agustin were created between 100 A.D. and 1200 A.D. They include representations of human figures, smiling and sneering monsters as well as animals such as snakes, birds and jaguars.

6. Zona Cafetera

Travelers who love their java will definitely want to visit Zona
Cafetera (Eje Cafetero) where almost half of Colombia’s coffee crop is grown on the slopes of the Andes. Visitors can learn more about coffee at El Parque del Café, a park that has a botanical garden with coffee plants and an amusement park. The Zone has a gold museum featuring pre-Columbian artifacts.

5. San Gil

San Gil is an old colonial town in northeast Colombia. Founded by the Spanish in 1689, it was named the region’s tourism capital in 2004. The designation honors mainly the main outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, rafting and kayaking. Couch potatoes may enjoy a visit to the cathedral built in 1791

4. Villa de Leyva

Villa de Leyva may be a small town less than a four-hour drive from Bogota, but its Plaza Mayor is one of the biggest town squares in South America. At one time people were executed on this immense square, which is now used as a gathering place for celebrations and festivals, such as the onion beauty pageant.

3. Bogota

Bogota, sometimes referred to as “the Athens of South America”, was first settled by indigenous peoples, though the founding date is generally set at 1538 by a Spanish explorer. Today, the city is one of the largest cities in South America and Colombia’s capital. Once considered a place to avoid, Bogota has cleaned up its act and is fast becoming one of the best places to visit in Colombia.

2. Tayrona National Park

Tayrona National Park is a must-see place for travelers who enjoy nature and exploring old ruins. Located on the north Colombia coast, the park offers a variety of ecosystems, from swamps to scrublands to cloud forests. For many travelers, the park’s biggest attraction is its beaches, set in deep bays and shaded with coconut palms. In fact, Tayrona beaches are among Colombia’s most beautiful.

1. Cartagena

Cartagena is the bustling city where Kathleen Turner’s character Joan Wilder begins her Colombian adventures in Romancing the Stone. Hopefully, travelers will get their visits off to better starts, though the city is just as busy as when it was one of the key Caribbean ports from the 16th to 18th centuries. Fought over by various countries, Cartagena was one of the most heavily fortified cities in South America; these fortifications can still be seen today.
