5 Main Things To Do In Brunei

This video shows the 5 main things to do in Brunei.

#1 Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque
#2 Istana Nurul Iman
#3 Kampong Ayer
#4 Royal Regalia Museum
#5 Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien

Most people will stop over for a few hours or a day or so.
I only spent 3 hours there and was able to do all 5.

One point I must make after reading so many comments correcting me. I called the housing opposite Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque as slums (which they were.... they are gone now I believe). I also called the water village (Kampong Ayer) which is not (I only went from what I saw and was told at the time).

It’s a small but very rich sultanate located on the north coast of the island of Borneo.

But the number one landmark in Brunei is Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque.

Other attractions are not so impressive.
There is a Chinese temple hidden downtown.

Also in the center there is Royal Regalia Building Museum,

A little outside the city center there are three museums and two mausoleums, all in walking distance.
One of these mausoleums is in Kota Batu Archaeological Park

Brunei - The oddest country we've ever been to! (in a good way)

Brunei, a tiny little country on the North coast of Borneo is definitely the strangest country we've ever visited. Signs of its former glory are still around but as the oil boom is past things are definitely looking a little run down. The country seems to be re-making itself and it'll be interesting to see what the next decade brings.

The people we met were incredibly friendly and helpful. We stayed only a few days but I think we covered the highlights. It was cool to see but I'm not sure there's enough to do for us to take another trip there soon.

edit: Note that I've edited the description above to remove a line about the Sultan. While the information I wrote was what citizens of Brunei shared with me while I was there, it clearly struck a nerve with people from Brunei. My intent with my photos, videos or any other content I put out is never to offend people, but to show people a part of the world they may have never been to and inspire travel. I'm glad so many people from Brunei are proud of their country and I appreciate the mostly positive feedback I heard from this video.

Travel video about destination Brunei.
Brunei Darussalam is a tiny sultanate in the north of the island of Borneo located on the shores of the South China Sea and is surrounded by the Malayan federal states of Sabah and Sarawak. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is like something from an exotic fantasy.

The splendour of the mosque of Sultan Omar Ali Saiffudin is a captivating sight. This Islamic landmark is also a symbol of great wealth and was built in 1958 and was named after the father of the present sultan. Snow white Italian Carrara marble was used as building material, with granite from Shanghai. It commemorates the founder of modern Brunei.

On a classic longboat powered by outboard motor, we travel on the Brunei River and are soon surrounded by mangrove brush. Tropical thunderstorms and monsoon rain create dense vegetation and the ensuing humidity produces lush flora.

At the junction of two muddy-grey waterways of the Brunei River is an historic location, Kampung Ayer, a water village. Each building and adjoining pathway is built on posts yet there is both an electricity and drinking water supply. Plants decorate the terraces, and TV aerials are everywhere and it has a population of around thirty thousand.

Brunei is a land that has almost lost its history while moving into modern times. It is a country that has grown amazingly wealthy since its gas has hissed and its oil has spluttered from deep below the ground. Liquid gold - Allah be praised!

A few months ago I (Chen) took a solo summer vacation to a few countries and one of those was Brunei! On the last stop of our trilogy vacation we are finally going to knock off another country off the list! In full disclosure I only spent a day in this rich and new country and I also went with absolutely no plan in mind. However, with the country being quite small it was easy to check out most of the top attractions in the 36 hours that I had there. Brunei is known for it's royal family, strong muslim religion, and being rich in oil. Needless to say this country was definitely one of the more peculiar that I have been to. Make sure to watch the video to find out why! Also, as always let me know if you have any questions and never forget to like, comment, & subscribe if you haven't already!

Top Rated 10 Tourist Attractions & Destinations in Mongolia

With a vast territory and a long history, Mongolia offers so much to see and explore. Here listed for you the top 10 attractions and destinations in Mongolia.

Brunei is the land of unexpected treasures and Instragram entrepreneurs

If you were on Borneo Island, Malaysia, and had the opportunity to visit another country, just a 35 minute flight away, would you?

Of course you would, and I jumped at the chance, especially when the entire 48 hour trip was set up for me to meet with the friendly locals from start to finish (thanks Dino).

And I got to be there for their 29th National Day, when everyone dresses up and celebrates their independence with the Sultan.

He just happens to be the 29th Sultan too. And if you think you're busy, he's busier.

I found out he's not just the Sultan but also the King, Prime Minister, Supreme Commander of the armed forces, Chancellor of UBD and Minister of Finance and I think some other things.

So I put together a special video to show you around. Watch it now and go on to read all about Brunei and the Instagram entrepreneurs.

Why Brunei Is Worth A Visit

It's is located on the island of Borneo, with a past time of eating and socializing.

If you like either of those you're in luck, oh and Instagram. Almost everyone it seems is on Instagram.

With a population of around 380,000 and 70% Muslim you certainly get your dose of the 3Ms here -  monkeys, mosques and museums.

In my naivety I really thought it had a strong Arab influence, turns out it doesn't. They do however use Rumi -Arabic  translation of how the words are pronounced, for every single English sign.

If you're not eating or socializing I highly recommend going on a river trip to see monkeys, crocodiles and people who live in water villages.

It's super reasonable, and a great 2 hour trip to see Brunei from the water... and  of course eat more food.

Some other unique facts (don't quote me on these)

The average salary for government employee's who are degree educated is $2,600 Brunei dollars per month. That's USD $2086.

Most people do seem to work for the government, or themselves. And they work Saturdays but not Friday or Sunday - which is prayer day.

In fact the Sultan recently imposed a decision to have all businesses shut up shop between midday and 2pm on a Friday so people can pray.

This means if you want to check into a hotel around then you may have to wait. Or if you're hungry then you're out of luck. If you're an owner of a restaurant you're now losing a ton of money on one of your most popular days.

But no one argues about this as that would mean they'd have to speak up against the main guy who provides them with free education and no income tax and all those other benefits....

Did I mention they love food?

My entire trip was based around pretty incredible food. I was super lucky to have, the unofficial official food ambassador for Brunei, take me on a tour of some of the best places to eat, from food markets to restaurants.

Instagram Stars And Social Media Mavens
So here's the lesson that I learned, 70% of people in Brunei are heavy Internet users and as a result they are ALL over social media.

The holy grail seems to be Instagram. No kidding. It's amazing how many people are on it, and more importantly doing business through it.

So when they're not busy eating, they're taking photos of what they're eating and sharing them on Social Media. Honestly watch my video for proof.

While I was there I got to witness something of an Instragram phenomenon. A group of 5 ladies have been getting together to do monthly bake sales of their goods, entirely driven by Instagram.

They post photos of what they're making and the date and time of the event and hundreds show up.

On the weekend I was there I go to witness Sweet As Sara sell 600 cupcakes in 2hrs 22 mins - oh and they were delicious.

This was the first time she had done the group effort with the other ladies and over 200 people were in line.

I felt pretty priveleged to hang with many movers and shakers in the social media world while I was in Brunei. This included the Number One blogger Rano Adidas.

He's more popular than their national newspaper, radio stations and other sources of news and information combined.

In fact is THE Social Media site people go to for the latest and hottest events, trends, updates and news, with 5,000 visitors a day!

After 10 years of blogging daily he now makes multiple six figures through advertising and sponsorship, and is that influential that when he posts, people listen,

In fact he was kind enough to tag me in an Instagram photo after meeting me, and it had 100 likes within an hour and I'd picked up 60 new followers - unbelievable.

Plus before we event got to meet, we both made the National Newspaper in an article on National Day.

So now you know a little more about the unexpected treasures you'll find in Brunei, you should consider going. Otherwise I highly recommend you check out Instagram to keep up with it all.

Tell me in the comments below what you liked and learned from this video (and whether you like the new intro).
