Prevent/cope with Homesickness while studying abroad

PLEASE READ:
(and don't forget to turn on the video's annotations)

Are you a bit worried about experiencing homesickness while studying abroad? Or are you currently experiencing homesickness and are looking for a bit of advice, or a different outlook? You're in the right place, because I made this video for you!

______________

Homesickness is completely normal, and everyone experiences it at different levels. I think it's all about perspective, and making the most of your situation.

If you keep the few things that I mention in mind, I'm sure you'll be just fine! I'm not an expert, but everything that I mentioned is based off my own experience. So find what works best for you :)

________________

To summarize what I said in the video (in no particular order):

1. Realize you'll be away from home for a finite amount of time. Before you know it, you'll be back home to all the familiar, and all that you love.

2. Use technology to your advantage. Have a chat with your family and friends every once in a while when you're missing home. Just make sure you don't stay stuck inside all day skyping, or checking your facebook instead of exploring and meeting new people. It's important to stay in contact with friends and family back home, but it's just as important to meet new people and enjoy the company of the new friends you'll make. It'll make your experience abroad all the more enjoyable, and all the more comfortable!

3. I didn't mention this in the video, but i found this to be extremely helpful. If you're feeling down, share your feelings with friends who are also studying abroad, or on exchange like you. I bet they're feeling a bit homesick too. By sharing your feelings, you guys can help lift each other up, and create an even stronger friendship. It's always nice to speak to someone who understands what you're going through. :)

4. Keep an open mind. Embrace all the differences, and focus on the things that you love or enjoy about your host country.

5. Think of your host country as home, by making it home. Bring little momentos, or little things from home to decorate your room or apartment. Things such as: photos, a favorite book, a teddy bear... anything meaningful.

6. Try to find a balance between schoolwork, and your time to explore. I know it's easier said than done, but really try. You don't want to be stuck inside all day working on your assignments, because you'll be missing out on an essential part of the study abroad experience. Plus, you might feel limited, and the stress of assignments might feel even more overwhelming if you don't give yourself a break. Feeling stressed might increase the feeling of homesickness.
But remember, you also don't want to ignore your schoolwork altogether. Your education is also an important part of your 'study abroad' experience. If you don't want to study, then maybe a simple vacation would be best (and possibly cheaper) ;)

Survival Tips: Homesickness while living abroad.

Recently I've been feeling pretty homesick, and it's not something I've personally been through before. It was really different than I thought it would be, and the things that helped were also not what I assumed they would be!
I wanted to talk about it because I think a lot of people (including me) feel guilty for feeling homesick, as though feeling that way somehow means you aren't grateful enough for your new life, etc. I wanted to put it out there and share some things that help me when I'm feeling low, in case they help other people too. (:

Thank you for watching, and I'll talk to you soon!

Study abroad and Erasmus are fun times. Possibly one of the most important and influential parts of a college student's life, however it can be hard when homesickness kicks in. Here are some ways to keep in contact with your friends and family so that you do not feel homesick for too long.
1. email, 2. social networking, 3.
