Kathmandu City Guide | Nepal Travel Series Transcript:
Well good morning. It is our first full day in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं). We are up bright and early. Sometimes it’s nice to be surprised by a destination, so we arrived in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) without a whole lot of prior research. We knew we wanted to see the temples and palaces around Durbar Square (Basantapur Darbar Kshetra), but that was about it. We were up early, but Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) was buzzing. Scooters were racing to work, vendors were setting up their fresh produce, and construction work was underway.
Alright, so next up we are in Indrachok (इन्द्रचोक) It is a market area and yeah very lively. We're at the Garden of Dreams. Garden of Dreams (स्वप्न बगैंचा) and there is a beautiful little cafe & restaurant here. So we're just relaxing. These gardens are partly funded by the Austrian government. It is momo (饃饃) time. So we ordered vegetable momo today.
It is day 2 in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) and today's excursion is to the Monkey Temple. The name is Swayambhunath (स्वयम्भू स्तूप).
We just finished visiting the Monkey Temple. We're riding a taxi to visit Pashupatinath Temple (पशुपतिनाथ मन्दिर) which is one of the more popular ones here in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं).
This next temple is a sacred Hindu site (पशुपतिनाथ मन्दिर) where many believers choose to be cremated. According to the Nepalese Hindu tradition, the body must be dipped three times into the Bagmati River in order to break the reincarnation cycle.
So today is our last day in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) and we've been staying in the neighborhood of Thamel. It is kind of like the touristy area. They have a lot of shops where you can pick-up souvenirs and like little trinkets to take back home. So we're going to do a bit of shopping.
Today we are having Dal Bhat (दालभात). We've been eating Dal Bhat (ডাল ভাত) very very often. So much so Sam has declared it his favorite dish.
Lastly in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं), we went in search of a rooftop terrace to enjoy a drink & watch the sunset with colourful prayer flags blowing in the wind.

There is so much more to the city of #Kathmandu than the tourist hub of #Thamel. These are our top picks for things to do in Kathmandu, #Nepal
1. Visit #Swayambhunath Temple aka the Monkey Temple. Set high above Kathmandu this temple gives you beautiful views over the whole city and the mountains beyond - oh and there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys.
2. Explore Thamel. As a tourist you'll inevitably find yourself here. It's hugely overpriced compared to the rest of the city, but it's a lot of fun and great to check out for an afternoon. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.
3. Eat street food. The very best food you'll have in Nepal is local street food. Just make sure you scope out the stand to check for cleanliness and to make sure it's busy.
4. Boudenath Stupa. Jump on bus or in a local taxi and head to #Boudenath Stupa. It's the largest Buddhist shrine outside of Tibet. Well worth the visit.
5. Explore Patan. Before Kathmandu became the sprawling city that it is today, it was made up of three smaller cities. The ruins at Patan are worth an afternoon.
6. Learn to cook Mo Mo's.#MoMo's are delicious. There is no denying it. Learning to cook them takes a couple of hours but it's a great way to meet local people and gain insight into their culture.

Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, is set in a valley surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. The Kathmandu Valley (Nepali: काठमाडौं उपत्यका) (Nepal Bhasa: स्वनिगः and also नेपाः गाः), located in Nepal, lies at the crossroads of ancient civilizations of Asia, and has at least 130 important monuments, including several pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhists. There are seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within this valley.
Historically, the valley and adjoining areas made up a confederation known as Nepal Mandala. Until the 15th century, Bhaktapur was its capital when two other capitals, Kathmandu and Lalitpur, were established. After the annexation of the valley by the Gorkha Kingdom, and subsequent conversion of the valley as the capital of their empire, the designation of Nepal was extended to every land they conquered.
The Kathmandu Valley is the most developed and populated place in Nepal. The majority of offices and headquarters are located in the valley making it the economic hub of Nepal. It is popular with tourists for its unique, rich, culture and architecture; including the highest number of jatras in Nepal. The valley itself was referred to as Nepal Proper by British historians.

After traveling through India, we took a flight from Delhi to Kathmandu. I was excited to explore a bit of Nepal, and we first began our explorations in the largest city of Kathmandu. Kathmandu is a beautiful city and there are quite a few things to do. But as a foodie traveler, I was of course most interested in sampling Nepali food and also Nepali street food, which I knew very little about before visiting Nepal.
In Kathmandu, there's not a lot of street food when you compare the city to a place like Bangkok. There are some stalls, but many of the street food is housed in small tiny little restaurants where you pull back a curtain and sit on small tables and benches to enjoy home cooked noodles and momo dumplings. Around the Boudha stupa (also known as Boudhanath stupa) in Kathmandu, there are some good Nepali street food carts, many of them serving a mixture of both Tibetan and Nepali street food snacks.
When I saw this cart that was cooking something extremely delicious smelling along with a pair of very friendly vendors, I knew I'd have to give it a sample. The vendors were very happy to be featured and I quickly ordered two items from their menu. All their street food were stacked within the glass encased cart and as soon as someone would order something, they would quickly dunk it into the hot oil until hot through and through. The vendors would then put them on top of a piece of newspaper, and slice them into pieces. Depending on your personal preference, the vendor would then scoop on a spoon of hot sauce to add extra flavor and complete the Nepali street food snack.
I started by street food sampling with a buffalo shapale, which is a Tibetan Nepali meat pie. It was filled with minced buffalo and possibly some onions. The flavor was great from the meat and it was improved by the hot and salty chili sauce. Next up was something known as an aloo chop, which is basically a deep fried potato cutlet. It was incredibly good, a ball of spicy mashed potatoes that were crispy on the outside and flavored so wonderfully. For my final Nepali street food snack this round, I couldn't resist a small piece of Nepal style fried chicken. The meat on the little drumstick was pushed all the way to the end so it provided a chicken handle with which is hold while enjoying the chicken. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. Situated in the foothills of the Himalaya, the highest mountains in the world, Kathmandus history stretches back more than 2700 years. There are several UNESCO World Heritage Sites and tons of amazing other places and sights for you to see! This video will take you around Kathmandu valley and will introduce you to some of the most important places and sights:
Thamel is the main tourist area in town. Most hotels, restaurant and shops targeting travelers can be found here, as well as basically everyone in the city who wants your money.
It can be crowded, dusty, noisy and straight forward annoying at times, but t's also unbelievably convenient. Local and international restaurants, cool bars with mixed crowds (locals and foreigners), souvenir shops, travel and trekking agencies as well as tons of outdoor and hiking stores make Thamel the best place to stay if you still have some things to organize for your Nepal Trip. If you already have everything in place and prefer your peace and quiet, Thamel might not be the right place for you.
Drubgon Jangchup Choaling near Kathesimbu Stupa is a small Tibetan Buddhist monastery, hidden away in a tiny courtyard just a few minutes of walk south of Thamel. Despite it's very convenient location the monastery is a bit off the eaten path, as it's relatively unknown to foreign tourists. It might be a good place to have some peaceful moments if Thamel starts becoming too busy.
Another great place to escape the chaos on the streets is the Garden of Dreams. It's a 100 year old now public neo-classical garden complex on the eastern end of Thamel. It might just be a 5 minute walk from Kathmandus tourism epicenter, but one you're inside, you feel like thousands of miles away from Thamels hawkers.
One of the most important things to see in Kathmandu is the world famous Durbar Square, the square in front of the royal palace, which now is a museum. Durbar Square is surrounded not only by the royal palace, the palace of the living goddess Kumari and several different courtyards, temples, shrines and pagodas. The entrance fee is a steep 10 USD, but it's definitely worth a visit, despite some of the temples were heavily damaged in the 2015 earthquake and some of the rebuilding work isn't quite finished as of 2019.
One of the most beautiful things to see in Kathmandu is Boudhanat Stupa, one of the tallest and largest stupas in the world. Its an important Buddhist pilgrimage site and one of the most sacred places for Buddhists in Nepal. Travellers from all over the Himalaya come here to pray and admire the giant stupa.
One more spectacular Durbar Square to see in Kathmandu valley is the one of the royal city of Patan (also called Lalitpur) south of Kathmandu City. The trip takes only a few minutes by taxi. Patan Durbar Sqare is a but smaller than the one in Kathmandu, but not less spectacular. Its more calm and some might also argue its more pretty.
One of the most famous things to see in Kathmandu is Swayambhunath, the so called Monkey Temple. This is a huge Buddhist Temple complex on top of a rather steep hill in the western outskirts of Kathmandu. While the stupa is a bit smaller than Boudhanat, the place is no less popular with visitors. Partly because the temples are inhabited by thousands of whitey monkey without and shyness towards the visitors. This is a true must see in Kathmandu!
One more thing to see in Kathmandu valley is the ancient royal city of Bhaktapur, a few kilometres east of Kathmandu city. The whole town is a UNESCO world heritage site and walking through these small alleys feels just like exploring a living museum. Additionally to basically the whole town being a medieval wonderland, Bhaktapur also features a Durbar Square, just like Patan and Kathmandu itself.

After the annexation of the valley by the Gorkha Kingdom, and subsequent conversion of the valley as the capital of their empire, the designation of Nepal was extended to every land they conquered.
The Kathmandu Valley is the most developed and populated place in Nepal. The majority of offices and headquarters are located in the valley making it the economic hub of Nepal. It is popular with tourists for its unique, rich, culture and architecture; including the highest number of jatras in Nepal. The valley itself was referred to as Nepal Proper by British historians.
