CURIOUS ABOUT TRAVELING TO PUERTO RICO!? | 25 Facts You Should Know Before Booking A Trip ✈️ ???? ????????

25 - Puerto Rico is a rectangle-shaped island. It’s a touch smaller than Connecticut in both land mass and population.

24 - In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico. The Taino Indians already called the island home. Around 90% of them died within just a few decades, due to violence and disease.

23 - In 1898, Spain handed Puerto Rico over to the United States during a peace treaty that ended the Spanish-American War. Spain also gave the U.S. the Philippines and Guam.

22 - As of today, Puerto Rico is a U.S. Commonwealth. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, but cannot vote during presidential elections. The island has its own governor and legislative branch, plus pays its own taxes.

21 - Puerto Rico is the third largest island in the U.S., after the Big Island of Hawaii and Alaska’s Kodiak Island.

20 - Puerto Rico is broken up into 78 municipalities, basically like counties. Each municipality varies in size, population, politics, and wealth.

19 - Puerto Rico's average annual temp is around 80 degrees. The island’s rainy season runs from April through November. Pack a raincoat and an umbrella.

18 - The Coqui frog is a big part of Puerto Rican culture. The frog gets its name from the distinct sound it makes - a high-pitched, chirping “ko-kee.” The frogs are only about an inch in length, but scientists have recorded male calls of over 100 decibels.

17 - Spanish is the dominant language in Puerto Rico, though many people on the island are fluent in English. And those that aren’t, often know basic English. Of course, packing a little bit of Spanish doesn’t hurt.

16 - Most people fly in and out of San Juan, but there are smaller commercial airports in Ponce and Aguadillia. Flights, especially from Florida where there is a large Puerto Rican population, can be pretty cheap. I paid $225 (roundtrip) from Orlando to San Juan.

15 - Puerto Ricans are talkative and proud of their island. I picked up so many restaurant and day-trip ideas by chatting with people in passing.

14 - Puerto Rican music and dance include bomba, Latin jazz, hip hop, electronica, and more. Ricky Martin, Daddy Yankee, and Bad Bunny all hail from the island.

13 - Puerto Rico’s legal drinking age is 18, not 21 like the mainland U.S.

12 - After being hospitalized in Chile for Salmonella last year, I drank bottled water in Puerto Rico. However, the CDC and WHO say the island’s drinking water is generally safe, noting that it must meet the same standards as the mainland U.S.

11 - If you plan to travel beyond San Juan, book a rental car as public transportation outside of the capital city is virtually non-existent. My 19-day car rental with Dollar cost around $665. That included an unlimited toll transponder. Many of the island highways cost money and the violations are hefty.

10 - Your rental car contract will most likely prohibit you from taking your rental on the ferry to the islands of Culebra and Vieques. Instead, you’ll have to park your rental at the ferry terminal in Ceiba, and then rent another vehicle, once you get to Culebra or Vieques. Renting two cars simultaneously is expensive, but it's very helpful to get around, especially on Vieques.

9 - Puerto Ricans can be a bit aggressive behind the wheel. Some of the roads have big potholes and speed bumps. Driving in the central mountainous region of the island has its own challenges with narrow lanes that twist and turn, plus spotty-to-non-existent cell phone service.

8 - Gas is measured in liters, not gallons. There are around 3.8 liters per gallon. In other words, regular unleaded was around $3.40 a gallon during my visit in April 2023.

7 - If you’re an animal lover, be prepared to see lots of stray cats and dogs roaming the streets. You’ll also see chickens and horses across the island.

6 - The island has very few wild animals that attack humans. No big cats or bears, only one type of poisonous snake, and a very small section on the northern coast with caimans. Tourists should be more concerned with rip currents, especially around San Juan.

5 - I had zero safety issues while traveling across Puerto Rico, with expensive camera gear, nonetheless. In fact, I don’t recall one person even pestering me for money. I did make sure my rental car had a trunk, which came in handy as you shouldn’t leave valuables visible in your parked car.

4 - U.S. Citizens do not need a passport to enter or exit Puerto Rico. As of April 2023, COVID vaccination cards were not required either.

3 - My regular Verizon cell phone plan covered Puerto Rico and at no extra charge. The same was true with my Geico auto insurance, which covered any potential damage to my rental car.

2 - Puerto Rican food is delicious. From Mofongo to the Pork Highway in Cayey to fresh-caught seafood and smoked BBQ, I didn't have one bad meal on the island.

1 - Puerto Rico might look small, but there is a lot to explore. One tour guide told me a full month is necessary to see it all.

What To Know Before You Visit Puerto Rico

• — Puerto Rico is a multilayered place and Puerto Ricans are a complex society, even though they might seem jovial and lighthearted on the surface. Multiple societal and political contradictions collide on this small Island to produce one the most diverse, interesting and inviting societies on earth.

As a seasoned tourist, who likes to experience societies as one more of the local citizens, I devote this short video to explore aspects like local politics and economics, geography, the people’s outlook, age and the law, water quality and crime. These are all aspects of a society that you want to understand if you really want a taste of what it’s like to be a Puerto Rican.

We answer questions like:

• Is Puerto Rico a colony?
• Are Puerto Ricans U.S. Citizens and why?
• What is the REAL political status of Puerto Rico?
• What currency is used in Puerto Rico?
• Is Puerto Rico an island or an archipelago?
• Why are Puerto Ricans always so happy?
• What is the legal age to do ________ in Puerto Rico?
• Is the water safe to drink in Puerto Rico?
• What about crime? Is it safe to visit Puerto Rico?

All this and more is covered in this 5-minute video. And as always, it’s written from a resident’s perspective who always “tells it like it is”. So relax, get yourself a cup of your favorite beverage, lean back in your armchair and learn a little about Puerto Rico and the Puerto Ricans before visiting this beautiful island. —

Oh, and by the way, take a look at our e-books for the Amazon Kindle: “The Old San Juan Walking Tour” and “Puerto Rico Beach By Beach”. They’re packed with useful information about all the main attractions in Old San Juan and the best beaches In Puerto Rico. And best of all, they’re less than five dollars apiece.
