10 Facts About Our Planet You Didn't Learn In School

10 Strange Things You Didn't Know About Your Planet!

1. Queen of the Planet.
Planet Earth has a surface area of around 510 million square kilometers, only around 30% of the entire Earth's surface is land, and one-sixth of that land is legally owned by the Queen of England!

2. Iron Core.
The Earth's Core is believed to be composed of two layers, the outer layer is believed to be liquid and the inner layer, solid, and both, although the exact percentages are unknown, are believed to be mainly composed of Iron and Nickel and about the same temperature as the surface of the sun, 5500 degrees centigrade! (9900 F).

3. The Earth is Slowing Down.
The tides are created by the gravitational effect the moon has on our planet, this effect is greatest when the moon, the Earth, and the Sun are aligned. This pull, on either side of the planet, doesn't just affect the oceans but also stretches the earth itself and affects the Earth's kinetic momentum, actually slowing down the Earths rotation, even if very minimally, about 17 milliseconds every 100 years, even so, in about 140 million years the days will be 25 hours long.

4. Radiator
The Earth generates as much as 40 Terawatts of heat, half of that comes from the radioactive decay of elements like Thorium, Potassium, and Uranium within the Earth's core. The internal heat that keeps Planet Earth warm and vibrant comes from a giant natural nuclear reactor within its core, king of like a massive nuclear power plant and we're all just sitting on top of it.

5. Planet, Earth?
Unlike all the other planets that have been named after Roman or Greek gods and have historical data about which person or group named them, Planet Earth remains a mystery. No one knows who named Planet Earth, Earth or when it was named or why.

6. H2 oh!
70% of the Earth's surface is water, only 3% of that 70% is fresh water and of that, two-thirds is trapped in ice sheets and glaciers. The majority of the remaining 1% is actually trapped in lakes and reservoirs. If you were to take all the water in all the clouds in our skies at any one time and spread it over the surface of the planet it would reach a depth no thicker than a human hair.

7. Down Under and Up and Over.
We all know that the Earth's tectonic plates are always shifting but Australia's is moving so fast that GPS and Maps have to be updated regularly. From 1994 to 2016 it moved almost 1.5m! (5ft). Scientists estimate that in 50 million years it will impact southeast Asia and in around 250 million years all the individual continents will go back to being one single supercontinent.

8. Too Hot To Handle.
The Earth's core is about 3000 km below our feet (1864 miles), a distance shorter than the length of the highway known as The Mother Road, Route 66. However, we could actualy never travel to the Earth's core, even if we had the technology necessary to bore down to it, by the time we'd traveled a thousandth of the way, just 3km (1.8 miles) the temperature would be too high for us to bear.

9 Earthquakes can be felt on the other side of the Planet.
In 2013, a magnitude 8 Earthquake occurred 400 miles below the Kuril Islands and people in Australia felt it! The largest earthquake ever recorded was a 9.5 magnitude and it happened in Chile in 1960 from a fault longer than the state of California, a Magnitude 13 earthquake would require a fault bigger than the Earth itself so a magnitude 12 would literally split the world in two.

10. Germaphobes Beware!
Scientists estimate that on Planet Earth there are approximately one Nonillion viruses, to put that into perspective, one quadrillion is a million billions and a nonillion is a quadrillion quadrillions, that's 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000!
If you were to share all the viruses out between every star in the universe, each star would have 100 million!

SUMMARY:
- If you think plastic surgery is a modern convenience, you’re up for a big surprise. India had it covered more than 2,500 years ago, way back in the 6th century B.C.E.!
- Up until the early 18th century, India was the only source of diamonds in the world. According to the Gemological Institute of America, these precious stones were first discovered and traded in the 4th century B.C.E.
- Civilized urban life as we know it dates back about 5,000 years in India. The Ancient History Encyclopedia says that, by 2600 B.C.E., dozens of towns and cities belonged to that civilization.
- Speaking of better social conditions, during the Vedic period, which lasted from about 1500 to 500 B.C.E., the Indian society was probably the most equal in the known world at that time.
- The concept of “zero” and the rules of its use were first invented in India at around the 7th century C.E. Before that, the idea of “nothing” hadn’t even been treated as a number.
- “Shampoo” is derived from the Hindi word “champo,” which means “to massage” or “knead.” And the first mention of this “head kneading” was by Greek historian Strabo back in the 4th century B.C.E.
- One of India’s greatest minds lived in the 5th century C.E. His name was Aryabhata, and he wrote a treatise on astronomy that became a foundation for many later studies.
- Do you play chess? Even if you don’t, you know what it is. But did you know that its ancestor was born in India too? The ancient game was called chaturanga, and it appeared at around the 6th century C.E.
- India wasn’t always a “subcontinent.” In the era of dinosaurs, over 100 million years ago, it was actually an island! It had broken off from a supercontinent and slowly but steadily traveled north, arriving to its present-day location in just about 50 million years.

Why Nobody Can Survive in the North Pole

A lot of expeditions have mysteriously ended in disasters. In the past, many ships got stuck on the ice, and people were stranded. Some ships have sunk and were never found. Not to mention that the Arctic Ocean underneath is still relatively unexplored. Did you know that even though the South Pole is colder than the North Pole, it gets approximately 20,000 visitors per year? Whereas the North Pole only gets about 1,000, including expeditioners. Why is that?

We’ve managed to explore almost all of our planet’s land, including all the inhospitable locations. And the North Pole made that list. So, what makes this place so dangerous? Why would Santa Claus choose to make this place his headquarters? What’s really going on there? Let’s try to figure it out!

SUMMARY:
- The ice is approximately 6 to 10 feet thick, and it’s floating in an ocean that’s anywhere from 3,500 to 18,000 feet deep.
- Even though the North Pole is literally ice, it’s actually warmer than the South Pole.
- The North Pole is ice surrounded by land, and the South Pole is land surrounded by ice. The waters underneath the North Pole are warmer than the floating ice – and the ocean warms up the air a bit.
- The North Pole has more complicated entry barriers. The main one is that it doesn’t have a fixed location. It’s just large chunks of ice that constantly move around the Artic Ocean.
- Imagine you’re walking in the woods and you get lost. Your best chance out of there is a compass. But, if you’re in the North Pole, then you’re in big trouble.
- Speaking of not being able to find your way out of there: figuring out what time it is can also be an issue in the North Pole.
- No-one really lives in the North Pole; even Inuit people who live in the surrounding Artic Regions of Russia, Greenland and Canada have never made it their home.
- There’s no drinkable water at the North Pole. Early Artic Explorers had a hard time dealing with thirst. In fact, finding water in the Artic is as difficult as finding water in the desert.
- Speaking of survival, there’s no vegetation in the North Pole. Trees require soil, and since the North Pole is a large block of ice, it doesn’t allow any plants to grow.
- Artic Foxes, Polar Bears, and many other terrestrial animals don’t often migrate to the North Pole, because it can be an unpredictable environment.
- Polar Bears are the largest bears on earth, and they can only survive in the freezing weather of the Artic.
- Scientists now believe that in 50 years there’ll be no Ice in the North Pole during the summer, and they’re carrying out expeditions to research things further.
