Solothurn is a vibrant town of over 16,000 inhabitants. It’s located on the German side of Switzerland and is regarded as the finest Baroque town. You can see how the graceful Italian influences blend with French charm and German practicality. Solothurn is 30 kilometres east of Biel-Bienne, alongside the river Aare and at the southern point of the Jura mountain range.
From the 16th to the 18th centuries, the Catholic town of Solothurn was the residence of the French king’s ambassador and that’s why most of the buildings in the historic part of Solothurn date back to that period. For this reason Solothurn is also known as the Ambassador's town.
The number eleven has special significance in Solothurn: it was the eleventh canton to join the Swiss Confederation, the Old Town has eleven churches and chapels and the same number of fountains and towers. Additionally, the St Ursus Cathedral took eleven years to build, has eleven altars and bells, and its Italian-style staircase in front have levels between every eleven steps. Unsurprisingly, Solothurn's local beer is also called Öufi –Bier (DE) or Eleven Ale. There is also a boat called the Öufi-Boat (DE) and a popular bar called Eleven (DE).

Solothurn is regarded as the finest Baroque town in Switzerland, where Italian grandeur is combined with French charm and German practicality.
Fine Baroque and Renaissance buildings, such as the noble Palais Besenval, and magnificent religious buildings meet the visitor at every end and turn – the Old Town has eleven churches and chapels and the same number of fountains and towers. Truly magnificent is the St.Urs Cathedral, with an Italian-style staircase in front. Inside, there are wonderful Baroque stuccos.
Between the beautiful historic monuments, the patrician buildings and the sturdy fortifications, the traffic-free Old Town is a pleasant place to wander, with lots of small shops and inns. On warm summer evenings, it is very pleasant to sit in the garden restaurants and bars by the Aare.

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. Zurich’s Old Town is a cultural, social and historical melting pot. The historic heart of the city beats on both sides of the Limmat river. Here guild houses, churches, historic squares, and hidden-away places nestle alongside each other. Altstadt encompasses the area of the entire historical city before 1893. Altstadt is the German word for “old town” and refers to the historical center of Zurich.
The Grossmünster church is a landmark of Zurich. Legend has it that the church was built on the graves of the city’s patron saints, Felix and Regula. It was built in the 12th century and is one of the four main churches of Zurich, the others being the Fraumünster, Prediger and St. Peter’s churches . The church is famous for its twin towers and its role in the Swiss Reformation .
The St. Peter church in Zurich has the largest church clock face in Europe. It is the oldest parish church in Zurich. The original foundation walls from the 9th century are still visible under the choir.
The Fraumünster and Grossmünster churches are landmarks of Zurich. Founded in 853 by King Louis the German, Fraumünster with its convent was inhabited by the female members of the aristocracy of Europe. It is an elegant church with a delicate, copper-topped spire, a crypt museum & stained glass by Marc Chagall.
Bahnhofplatz is a public square, situated in front of the Zurich Hauptbahnhof, which is the largest railway station in Switzerland. Bahnhofplatz is dominated by the Alfred Escher fountain, created to honor the memory of Alfred Escher, a renowned Zurich politician and entrepreneur.
Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's world-renowned Shopping Boulevard.
Inaugurated in 1887, Quaianlagen is series of quaysides offering popular public spaces on the waterside.
Quaibrücke connects the Bürkliplatz with the Bellevueplatz, and hence the lake Zurich’s left shore with the right shore. Limmatquai is a pedestrian street along the right side of the Limmat River. Limmat River is approximately 35 kilometers long and originates from Lake Zurich.
Lindenhof is a hill located in the old town of Zurich that offers a panoramic view of the city.
