Soviet Lviv in Ukraine
3-9. September 2021. Ukraine (Україна). I've been to Western Ukraine's city of Lviv (Львів) maybe around 10 times, and usually make an effort to find buildings and areas I haven't visited yet. This time, my focus was more on Soviet architecture.
The Soviet-era structures you'll see on this visit include the Zolochiv Raion (Золочівський район) Marker (a Soviet street relic marking the entrance to the district), Stryiskyi Bus Station (the largest bus station in Western Ukraine), an unfinished auditorium attached to the Lviv Oblast State Tax Administration Building (formerly Regional Committee of the Communist Party), Lviv Circus, the abandoned Palace of Culture, the industrial socialist modernist Free Ukraine Publishing House, the Lviv Bus Factory, the brutalist Center for Culture & Creativity for Children & Youth (formerly Pioneer Palace) in Pohulyanka Park, the abandoned Ukrvino Plant (formerly the Jan Klein Brewery) also in Pohulyanka Park, Novoiavorivsk (Новояворівськ) Raion Marker, Truskavets Pump Station (THE place to go to consume not one, but FOUR healing local springs waters), and a former KGB prison in Drohobych (Дрого́бич).

And it isn't all Soviet. Took some time to visit some Austrian & Polish buildings, the Bear Sanctuary Domazhyr (still being built), Drogobych's Saint George's Church (one of the 14 UNESCO-listed Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine), Bruno Schulz's house (a Polish Jewish writer who was shot & killed by the Gestapo while walking home). and the huge Gothic Roman Catholic Church of Saint Bartholomew.
Music breaks are interspersed throughout this tour, most notably a concert by the great Ukrainian drummer Igor Hnydyn & American jazz artist Gregory Boyd, and Mozart opera at the Lviv Opera.

Ukraine: Olesko Castle
The Olesko Castle (Ukrainian: Олеський замок) is currently located within the borders of the present-day Busk Raion in Ukraine. The first historical records of the castle are in a document dated 1390, when Pope Boniface IX gave Halych, a Catholic bishop, this castle as a gift. It is located about seventy-five kilometers from Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine.
The Olesko Castle, oval in shape, stands on top of a small hill, about fifty meters in height. A moat and a wall surrounds it, which serves as a defence for the castle. The castle is also surrounded by a dense swamp. The land that the castle sat on changed ownership many times. It was originally on the border of land of Volhynia and land of Lviv.
The castle was, at different times, owned by Poland, Lithuania, and Hungary. It became a political landmark in the 14th century when movable borders between the three aforementioned countries ran through its territory. Battles for ownership of the castle were constant. A deep well in the basement of the castle was used as an escape route for besieged prisoners.
In the 15th century, the castle was changed from being a defense point, to simply a getaway for aristocracy.
The castle is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski, the hero of the Battle of Vienna. He often lived there, and collected many of the artworks currently displayed in the present-day museum. Another Polish king, King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, was also born here.
The castle was restored in the late 16th to the early 17th Centuries. Paintings and mosaics were brought in to decorate the different rooms of the castle. The castle was remodeled in the Italian Renaissance style, which was popular at that time.
In 1838, an earthquake rocked the castle, partly destroying some areas. In 1882, the castle, regarded as a Polish national monument was bought by the Committee of Preservation of the Olesko Castle, which led to a restoration in 1892. Both World War I and World War II affected the castle negatively, undoing previous restoration work. In 1956, the castle was struck by lightning.
The castle was restored again, beginning in 1961 and lasting until 1985. Today, it is a museum, displaying the collections of antique furnishings and art dating from the 16th-17th Centuries. It also features sculptures, paintings, still lives, applied arts, tapestries, period weapons, and objects used in everyday life at the time. Its collection is regarded as one of the richest treasury of Polish art outside borders of Poland.
The castle is a part of the Golden Horseshoe, a ring of three castles nearby each other: the Olesko, the Pidhirtsi, and the Zolochiv Castles.

Castles Day Trip From Lviv (The Golden Horseshoe) 2021
In this video we take a day trip from Lviv to see 3 castles, Zolochiv, Pidhirsti, and Olesko along the route known as the Golden Horseshoe. There are different options available to see the castles ranging from budget friendly group tours to the more expensive private tours or if you prefer to be more independent you could rent your own car and drive. We opted for a private tour and booked through Kyiv Friendly Tours that cost us $250 USD total. The tour included private transportation with an English Speaking Guide and entrance fees to each location. Somewhat pricey but we did not feel like dealing with the hassle of groups tours and wanted the peace of being one on one with our guide. Another thing is that most other tours, especially group ones, were not in English. English guides would cost extra so after having done lots of research we found most private tours of our type were all roughly the same cost. Our guide, Anna, was phenomenal and she even took the time to show us some other areas outside of what was included in the itinerary.....i.e. the town of Zolochiv, The Roman Catholic Church of Exaltation and St. Joseph, etc.

The city of Lviv was the thrid cities I visited during my trip in Ukraine.
We started by doing the free walking tour starting on the Rynok square to see the Boim Chapel, the Golden rose Synagogue and heard the story about Ivan Fedorov.
Also interesting fact, Ignatius Lukasiewicz the inventor of the Kerosen Lamp comes from Lviv.
I finished my week-end by doing a excursion to the castles next to lviv, I saw the Olesko Castle, Pidhirtsi castle and the Zolochiv Castle. Super interesting overview of the history of Ukraine!

Золочевский замок — замок в городе Золочев, Львовская область, Западная Украина. На протяжении веков замок был крепостью, королевской резиденцией, барской усадьбой, тюрьмой, учебным заведением. Сейчас Золочевский замок — это музей-заповедник, отделение Львовской картинной галереи. Замок посещают много туристов, он входит в туристический маршрут «Золотая подкова Львовщины».
Веками замок — крепость, королевская резиденция, барская усадьба, тюрьма, учебное заведение.
Замок был возведен на средства Якуба Собеского (отец короля Речи Посполитой Яна III Собеского) в 1634 году как оборонительная крепость по проекту неизвестного итальянского архитектора на месте старого деревянного замка, который окружали мощные земляные валы, обложенные камнем, с бастионами на углах и рвы с водой. Во дворе замка есть два дворца. Больший из них имеет название Большого дворца, а напротив въездной башни расположен Китайский дворец. Замок также интересен тем, что здесь была первая система канализации, которая сохранилась до наших дней.
Замок представляет неоголландский тип оборонительных сооружений и относится к памятникам типа «palazzo in fortezzo», то есть сочетает функции обороны и жилья.
Оборонительные сооружения Золочевского замка — это валы, бастионы, надвратная башня, мост и равелин. Со времен основания сохранились валы, бастионы, частично надвратный корпус, а равелин и мост — реконструкция.
В замковом дворе сохранились доныне только Китайский дворец, Большой жилой дворец и значительно перестроенная в конце XIX века надвратная башня.
Въездная башня, Китайский дворец, Большой жилой дворец создают ренессансный ансамбль.
В 2007 году возобновлено одно из оборонительных сооружений замка — равелин. Теперь в нём расположен ресторан, сувенирный магазин, санузел.
Во время реставрации Золочевского замка, в июле 1995 года, открыта часовня-памятник жертвам, замученным в замке. Авторский коллектив часовни-памятника — архитектор Василий Каменщик, скульптор Феодосия Бриж, художники Евгений и Ярема Безниско.
Одним из самых интересных экспонатов в Золочевском замке являются камни с зашифрованными надписями. Надписи, датированные концом XIV — началом XV веков, пока не расшифрованы. Камни привезли в 2000 году с окраины Золочева — села Новоселки. Предполагают, что надписи могли быть сделаны тамплиерами, которым также мог принадлежать замок, руины которого сохранились в окрестностях Новоселок.

After a long break, I am here with another travel vlog. Recently, I went to a small village in Kharkiv which is located in Zolochiv district and the village known as Kozachansky Village. This location is almost 40 km away from Kharkiv city, near the Russian Border.
This was the first time, I was able to explore the rural area of Ukraine and it was fun. A very beautiful adventurous road trip of my life so far. I have an invisible bonding with this village, will share it next time.
