Zemun town, Belgrade #zemun #belgrade #beograd #serbia serbia #travel #travelvlog

Zemun is a municipality of the city of Belgrade. Zemun was a separate town that was absorbed into Belgrade in 1934. The development of New Belgrade in the late 20th century affected the expansion of the continuous urban area of Belgrade.

The Municipality has an area of 153 square kilometres (59 square miles). It is located in the eastern Syrmia region, in the central-western section of the Belgrade City area. The urban section of Zemun is the both most northern and western section of the urban Belgrade. Zemun borders the province of Vojvodina to the west (municipality of Stara Pazova and municipality of Pećinci), and municipalities of Surčin to the south, Novi Beograd to the south-east and Palilula and Stari Grad across the Danube.

Zemun originally developed on three hills, Gardoš, Ćukovac and Kalvarija, on the right bank of the Danube, where the widening of the Danube begins and the Great War Island is formed at the mouth of the Sava river. Actually, these hills are not natural features. Zemun loess plateau is the former southern shelf of the ancient, now dried, Pannonian Sea. Modern area of Zemun's Donji Grad was regularly flooded by the Danube and the water would carve canals through the loess. Citizens would then build pathways along those canals and so created the passages, carving the hills out of the plateau. After massive 1876 floods, local authorities began the construction of the stony levee along the Danube's bank. Levee, a kilometer long, was finished in 1889. Today it appears that Zemun is built on several hills, with passages between them turned into modern streets, but the hills are actually manmade.

Belgrade Serbia | Things to do and see in Belgrade

Belgrade Serbia travel guide - Things to do and see in Belgrade
Belgrade (Београд), which means the “White City” is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. It’s one of the oldest metropolises in Europe, with settlements unceasingly remaining here for at least 7000 years. Belgrade rests on the relics of a prehistoric city. The first urban settlement was built in the 3rd century BC by the Celts. Due to its tactical location, the city has been conquered by the Celts, Romans, Goths, Huns, Ottomans, and then fought over by the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires. It has been fought over in 115 wars and razed to the ground 44 times. Belgrade was bombed a few times in the 20th century, both in World War I and War War II and once again by NATO in 1999. As a result of its turbulent history, the capital of Serbia is an incredibly rich mosaic of different cultures, influences and styles with a unique atmosphere. Belgrade is known as the city that never sleeps and the symbol of great nightlife. It's perfect for a long weekend or city break, so don't miss these amazing things to do and see in Belgrade:

48 Hours in Belgrade and Zemun || Serbia Travel Vlog

I knew nothing about Belgrade, which is why I had to go. I hadn’t seen photos, hadn’t researched anything, and didn’t know what to expect. I could enter this country with fresh eyes and capture it as I saw it. What I saw really impressed me. Incredibly detailed churches, a historic fortress, a bustling shopping district, and a vibrant waterfront. Though I didn’t have time to leave the capital, there was an old fishing village just a few miles away which gave me a more traditional taste for Serbia to compliment the modern cityscape. All in all, Belgrade really surprised me and I have to put it near the top of my list of Balkan cities.

Visit of Zemun (Serbia)

(EN) Zemun (Serbian Cyrillic: Земун, German: Semlin, Hungarian: Zimony) is a town in Serbia and one of the 17 municipalities which constitute the City of Belgrade, the country's capital. For most of its history, it developed separately from Belgrade, which lies across the Sava river, but the development of New Belgrade in the late 20th century joined them together in a continuous urban area.

(wikipidia)
