In Kazakhstan, the inhabitants have adapted to withstand all of nature's challenges. This film takes us into the centre of a snowstorm where thousands of travellers find themselves caught in an enormous traffic jam. We meet farmers who rely on hostile land. The Aral Sea, now completely dried out, has given place to a desert made up of sand, salt, and dust that's toxic to the inhabitants.

Tajikistan (/tɑːˈdʒiːkɪstɑːn/ (audio speaker iconlisten), /tə-, tæ-/; Tajik: Тоҷикистон, Russian: Таджикистан, romanised: Tadzhikistan), officially the Republic of Tajikistan (Tajik: Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон, romanised: Jumhurii Tojikiston), is a landlocked country in Central Asia. It has an area of 143,100 km2 (55,300 sq mi)[7][8][9] and an estimated population of 9,537,645 people.[16] Its capital and largest city is Dushanbe. It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north and China to the east. The traditional homelands of the Tajik people include present-day Tajikistan as well as parts of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
The territory that now constitutes Tajikistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the city of Sarazm[17] of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including the Oxus Valley Civilisation, Andronovo Culture, Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism and Islam. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Achaemenid Empire, Sasanian Empire, Hephthalite Empire, Samanid Empire and the Mongol Empire. After being ruled by the Timurid dynasty and the Khanate of Bukhara, the Timurid Renaissance flourished. The region was later conquered by the Russian Empire and subsequently by the Soviet Union. Within the Soviet Union, the country's modern borders were drawn when it was part of Uzbekistan as an autonomous republic before becoming a full-fledged Soviet republic in 1929.
On 9 September 1991, Tajikistan became an independent sovereign nation as the Soviet Union disintegrated. A civil war was fought almost immediately after independence, lasting from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow. The country has been led by President Emomali Rahmon since 1994
Tajikistan is a presidential republic consisting Tajikistan is landlocked, and is the smallest nation in Central Asia by area. It lies mostly between latitudes 36° and 41° N, and longitudes 67° and 75° E. It is covered by mountains of the Pamir range, and most of the country is over 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) above sea level. The only major areas of lower land are in the north (part of the Fergana Valley), and in the southern Kofarnihon and Vakhsh river valleys, which form the Amu Darya. Dushanbe is located on the southern slopes above the Kofarnihon valley.

The Amu Darya and Panj rivers mark the border with Afghanistan, and the glaciers in Tajikistan's mountains are the major source of runoff for the Aral Sea. There are over 900 rivers in Tajikistan longer than 10 kilometres.

Tajikistan consists of 4 administrative divisions. These are the provinces (viloyat) of Sughd and Khatlon, the autonomous province of Gorno-Badakhshan (abbreviated as GBAO), and the Region of Republican Subordination (RRP – Raiony Respublikanskogo Podchineniya in transliteration from Russian or NTJ – Ноҳияҳои тобеи ҷумҳурӣ in Tajik; formerly known as Karotegin Province). Each region is divided into several districts (Tajik: Ноҳия, nohiya or raion), which in turn are subdivided into jamoats (village-level self-governing units) and then villages (qyshloqs). As of 2006, there were 58 districts and 367 jamoats in Tajikistan.

This is the fourth episode in the Trans Mongolian Express series. In this episode I explore Irkutsk, the fourth largest city in Siberia. Irkutsk is absolutely worth exploring. There are many churches and cathedrals that are worth seeing.
Irkutsk has a green line that goes through the city, taking you to all the highlights and must sees. It's a very easy and convenient way to explore the city, especially if you have limited time.

Over 1000 Attendees Enjoy First Annual Italy Expo, Celebrating Italy in Tampa
A group of Tampa businesses and city leaders has hosted the first annual Italy Expo in Tampa Bay. The event, which took place February 4 through 6 in Tampa, aims to foster greater commercial exchange between Tampa Bay and Italy.
On the occasion of Italy Expo, the City of Tampa has illuminated downtown landmarks in green, white and red in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Tampa-Agrigento Sister Cities Affiliation. Italians began settling and shaping Tampa's character nearly 150 years ago, and this community would not be the wonderful place it is today without that heritage. We particularly cherish our sister cities relationship with Agrigento. The Italy Expo is an exciting, new tradition that I expect will thrive for many years to come and promote even closer ties between Tampa and our brothers and sisters in Italy, said Tampa Mayor Jane Castor.
With 57 exhibiting brands and 32 sponsors, Italy Expo has featured cooking demonstrations by celebrated Agrigento chef Salvatore Argento, and American TV and cookbook star Giuliano Hazan, wine and olive oil tastings and contests, as well as exhibits of all manner of Sicilian food, fashion and design, together with Italian music and a virtual reality tour of archaeological sites around Agrigento (conducted by the University of South Florida). Exhibitors from Agrigento, along with various community representatives, have taken part in the Expo. Sponsors included local business, cultural and government leaders such as law firm Shumaker, Italian tech company Clevertech North America, the City of Tampa, Visit Tampa Bay and Hillsborough County.
Italy Expo has been produced by Piazze d’Italia, an organization that works to increase commercial activities between Italy and Tampa Bay.

Iran - the Traveller's Holy Grail
Iran - or Persia - is a vast country with a population of 83 million people and is the second largest country in the Middle East. It is the home to one of the world’s oldest civilisations - the foundation of the Elamite kingdom was in the 4th millennium BC.
Historically, in the West we have tended to refer to it as Persia - a convention that stems mainly from the writings of the ancient Greeks who referred to the land as Persis, though this was actually one of the provinces (the area around Shiraz).
The name “Iran” on the other hand, derives from Middle Persian and is first attested in an inscription at Naqsh-e Rustam (which we will see later). “Iran” is also the root of our word “Aryan”.
The main language spoken is Persian (otherwise known as Farsi), though there are many other languages spoken by ethnic minorities: Azeri, Kurdish, Armenian, Mazandarani, to name a few. Persian is an Indo-European language and is in the family of languages spoken in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbeikstan and Turkmenistan. It is written in the Persian alphabet, which is derived from the Arabic script.
The Persians are Shi-ite Muslims and we’ll talk more about religion in Persia later….
