Little Smeaton - Disused Railway Bridges To Be Inflilled by National Highways - Cultural Vandalism?
In this video we visit the small village of Little Smeaton in North Yorkshire, to look at two disused railways bridges on the Hull & Barnsley Railway. These are two bridges that have been selected to be infilled by aggregate and concrete by National Highways Historical Railways Estate.
Some bridges have already been infilled - the most famous one at Great Musgrave in Cumbria. This has been labelled as cultural vandalism. Pressure from several groups have campaigned to stop the infilling. HRE agreed to pause infilling until further discussions can take place.
At Little Smeaton, we see bridges 123 and 124. Both currently small country lanes crossing a disused railway, with no obvious use for the former trackbed other than wasterland and fly tipping. This is why Highways England (now called National Highways) have labelled these two bridges for infilling.
Campaigners are calling for greater use of disused lines as active travel corridors. NH have agreed that they will not infill any heritage structures that fall in to this category.

Arundel is situated in West Sussex, and is home to Arundel Castle, seat of the Duke of Norfolk. It's also home to Arundel Cathedral, seat of the (Catholic) Bishop of Arundel and Brighton. Arundel is a perfect weekend or day trip away from Londo or Brighton.
We begin our virtual walking tour of Arundel on Queen Street, over the River Arun. Our walking tour continues up High Street and then along Tarrant Street - both famous for their beautiful shop fronts and restaurants. We explore both The Old Print Works Shopping Arcade and The Arundel Arts, Craft & Antiques Market before turning around at the delightful Picture Conservation and Restoration Studios.
Back on the High Street we continue around Maltravers Street and New Cut before descending back down the High Street for a view across the river.

The British Airways i360 is a 162-metre (531 ft) observation tower on the seafront of Brighton, East Sussex, England at the landward end of the former West Pier. The tower opened on 4 August 2016. From the fully enclosed viewing pod, visitors experience 360-degree views across Brighton, the South Downs, the English Channel and on the clearest days it is possible to see Beachy Head 17 miles (27 km) to the east and the Isle of Wight 41 miles (66 km) to the west.
