Affordable Cities: 10 US Metro Areas With Underrated Livability, Walkability and Transit

Which city should I move to? This is a question people are increasingly asking themselves as the challenge of finding affordable living in coastal and sun belt cities continues to spiral out of reach. Now, we're all for fighting the good fight to get more housing built in the places where people want to live...but for some people, you just can't wait for solutions. Today's video is here to help!

There's a staggering difference in cost of living between the sought-after cities of California (and even skyrocketing cities like Austin and Nashville), and established, legacy cities in other parts of the US. So this video tackles the question of not only what are the most affordable places to live in the US, but where good prices intersect with things city-lovers care about: public amenities, culture, sports, walkability, bike-ability, and transit service.

This is CItyNerd's guide to the ten most underrated cities to move to in the US. Your results may vary, so let me know what you think I overrated or underrated down in the comments!

Fair Harbor Fire Island NY ???????? walking tour to Atlantic Ocean ???? from Great South Bay New York USA

Fair Harbor Fire Island NY ???????? walking tour to Atlantic Ocean ???? from Great South Bay New York USA ????????

The gorgeous harbor at the center of town is where residents gather for “Sixish” on the dock at sunset, enjoy a top notch dinner at Le Dock, grocery shop at Pioneer Market and cool off with an ice cream cone at Unfreindly’s. The bay front swim area and playground are always filled with happy noise and sandy kids.

A “Barefoot Community”, Fair Harbor is a laid back, informal, bustling community. The architecture is as varied as its residents, from humble 1940’s cottages to spacious modern homes. Many of New York’s professionals flock to this lovely, lively town. Whether with children or single, the residents are here for relaxation and fun.

The magnificent harbor view from the dock is the best on the island. Everyone gathers here in the evening for “Sixish” to toast the setting sun. Kids sell their wares while adults mingle and share a glass of wine. Fair Harbor is the perfect town for single professionals to meet and for families with kids who all like to run free.

It is easy to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle here. The lifeguarded bay beach is a gathering place for parents to relax and chat while the kids swim out to the raft or climb in the newly renovated playground.

Unfriendly’s ice cream store is nearby for refreshments when the going gets tough.

The Lifeguard-patrolled ocean beach is wide, sandy and clean. A pair of shoes is rarely spotted in this town.

The center of town is on the bay front with the Pioneer gourmet market, Unfriendly’s ice cream stand, Corliss General store, the Loading Dock liquor store, post office, and fire house. Events are held frequently at the fire house.

Le Dock restaurant on the bay front has a spectacular view and fine dining. Be sure to make reservations well ahead of time.

The first-rate volunteer fire department services Fair Harbor, Dunewood and Lonelyville, its close neighbors.

Although there are almost 400 homes, it is a closely knit community, with a strong and active membership in the Fair Harbor Community Association. They oversee the town services, including choosing the doctor, lifeguards, and maintaining the marina.

They sponsor the Annual Pine Walk Crafts Fair on the dock and bay front 4th of July weekend, which has grown into a major showcase for local artists.

1863 Fire Island separates from Jones Beach

There was a time when Fire Island was connected to Jones Beach Island, a single island stretching 60 miles from Jones Beach to South Hampton. The Fire Island Inlet naturally formed in 1863, and was later expanded through manpower, once over 9 miles wide before shrinking to its current width.

***
1931 Fire Island separates from Southampton

A 1931 Nor’easter caused the formation of the Moriches inlet and resulting in the separation of Southampton and Fire Island. Local efforts have protected eastern Fire Island with a series of jetties that have interrupted the longshore drift of sand from east to west which is blamed for the beach erosion.

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy (unofficially referred to as Superstorm Sandy) was the deadliest, the most destructive, and the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season.

Hurricane Sandy was referred to as “Superstore Sandy because it had lost some of the traits needed to call it a hurricane. Sandy developed as an ordinary hurricane in the Caribbean, but as it moved up the East Coast and encountered cooler air and water, it began to loose its tropical characteristics. Hurricane Sandy was no longer a hurricane when it made land fall on Fire Island which is why it is also called Superstorm Sandy. The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge.

Cherry Grove ???? Fire Island NY ???????? Friday night walking tour to the Atlantic Ocean New York USA 2021

Cherry Grove ???? Fire Island NY ???????? Friday night walking tour to the Atlantic Ocean New York USA 2021

Cherry Grove (often referred to locally as The Grove) is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on Fire Island, a barrier island separated from the southern side of Long Island by the Great South Bay. The hamlet has approximately 300 houses on 41 acres (170,000 m2), a summer seasonal population of 2,000 and a year-round population of 15.

Cherry Grove, along with nearby Fire Island Pines, is considered one of the most popular lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)-accepting resort communities in the United States. The New York Times quoted one homeowner at Cherry Grove that, this is a wonderful environment where you could be gay and open and hold hands and enjoy life....

In 2013, the Cherry Grove Community House and Theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, one of only a few sites so far listed for their role in American LGBT history.

The founding philosophy of Cherry Grove is to be place to “Be Yourself.” The LGBTQ community comes here to enjoy the beach and the infamous nightlife. Every 4th of July, a ferryboat load of Drag Queens “Invade the Pines” and much merriment ensues. They also host the Miss Fire Island Contest at summer’s end and the Community Theater productions are top notch. Come to the Grove and be your happiest self. The Grove is a wet T-Shirt contest kind of town. Ferries leave from Sayville

The Grove is the wilder side of the gay scene and people feel free to be themselves here.

The dense foliage creates canopies over the roller coaster boardwalks. The homes, like everything in The Grove, have a sense of humor.

The downtown area and bay front has lots of shops and restaurants. Cherry Grove has one of the only two oceanfront restaurants on Fire Island.

Fire Island runs from Democrat Point / Fire Island Inlet in the west to Moriches Inlet / Cupsoque Beach in the east.

Point o' Woods Fire Island NY ???????? walking tour from the Great South Bay New York USA 2021 4K video

Point O' Woods is a hamlet that consists of a private vacation retreat on Fire Island, New York, in Suffolk County. Although it resembles a village or small town, with services such as a ferry port, a general store, church and fire department, the private community is open exclusively to members and their guests, who are the only persons allowed in through the hamlet's gate, or allowed to use the private ferry that runs to Point O' Woods from Bay Shore on Long Island.

Point O Woods feels like another century, and residents here guard their privacy. This stunning community borders Ocean Bay Park on the west and a stretch of open National Seashore to the east. Ferries leave from Bay Shore

Lonelyville Fire Island NY ???????? walking tour Atlantic Ocean ???? beach to Great South Bay New York USA

Lonelyville Fire Island NY ???????? walking tour Atlantic Ocean ???? beach to Great South Bay New York USA ????????

This small town begins at the east end of Fair Harbor and is only a few blocks long. There are no commercial services here and the residents seem to like it that way. There isn’t much boardwalk here, and you get to your house on the sand. If you want a peaceful retreat, this is the town for you. Ferries are from Bay Shore and shopping is in Fair Harbor

Of the islands many pocket communities, Lonelyville is one of the oldest on Fire Island.

Founded in 1905 by the South Shore Realty Company, this secluded town is characterized by its two distinct areas.

On the Western side, many original 1930’s cottages are nestled between the narrow wooden boardwalks, shaded by the lush vegetation.

Some vestiges of the buildings existing during the fishing operations of Capt. Selah Clock in the 1880’s can still be found.

On the Eastern side, homes sprouted up during the 1960’s along the more modern cement walkways. Though different in architecture, the two sides are joined by a love of privacy, relaxation, and comfortable lifestyle.

Many who reside here are long-timers, who have had homes here for generations. They share their town happily with the intrepid renters and newcomers.

There are no stores, restaurants, bars, or any of the usual amenities found in neighboring towns.

Groceries are brought from Fair Harbor or the mainland, and carried or wagonned in.

What is sacrificed in convenience is more than made up in the serenity and beauty of this special community.

Ferry service is from Bay Shore, use Dunewood ferry

Water Island Fire Island New York ???????? sunset view ???? walking tour NY USA ???????? summer September 10th 2021 4K video

Water Island
While Water Island might make you think it is a separate landmass, this is not the case. Water Island is a small, extremely private Fire Island beach community comprised of about 50 houses on modest plots of Fire Island real estate. With Davis Park to the East and Barrett Beach to the west, Water Island is far from the Fire Island beach civilization, creating a sense of privacy that is well-appreciated by its residents.

As early as 1878 a restaurant called the Pavilion existed where Water Island is today. It was run by a man named Richard Silsbee. During the 1890s Water Island was home to the prestigious White House Hotel, a pleasant example of beach hotel architecture designed by Edward Ryder and frequented by Theodore Roosevelt and his family. Caldwell Realty opened the areas up to residential development in 1912. The isolation of Water Island made it an ideal destination for rumrunners during the prohibition era.

Many coastal areas on Long Island and Fire Island share in this heritage, and as Fire Island has a legacy of wreckers and land pirates, this was not so great a leap—yet Water Island is perhaps the quintessential example of such an outpost. For a great many years, the residents of Water Island did not have even the most basic services. It was one of the last Fire Island communities to connect to the Long Island Power Authority grid. Prior to that, access to the nearest stores or restaurants required a mile-long hike to either Fire Island Pines or Davis Park. For many years there was no ferry service as well, only private boat access. However now a minimal ferry schedule out of Sayville, NY, finally exists.

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy (unofficially referred to as Superstorm Sandy) was the deadliest, the most destructive, and the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm inflicted nearly $70 billion (2012 USD) in damage. Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba. While it was a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record as measured by diameter with tropical-storm-force winds spanning 1,150 miles (1,850 km)

The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking New York's Sunken Forest on Fire Island

I walk through Fire Island's Sunken Forest at Sailors Haven. It features a winding boardwalk, gorgeous views, and picturesque landscapes. Many people think it is below sea level, but it is sunken because it is located below the secondary dune.

Davis Park Fire Island NY ???????? harbor walking tour 2021

Davis Park Fire Island ???????? New York harbor walking tour NY USA ???????? summer September 10th 2021 4K video

The origins of Davis Park can be tracked back to the 1940’s. It all started with Mr. Davis of Blue Point who owned a tract of land of Fire Island. When he passed away he left some of the land to his sons. One of those sons sold his share of the land to four friends (Lee Coffin, Ed Shembler, Joe Gerard, and Al Brown) who would later go on to build the Davis Park Casino.

The beach front would go on to be named Leja, which was composed of the first initials of each of the founders. In 2009, the National Park Service and other collaborating organizations had initiated a beach re-nourishment project that included the Davis Park area. The project cost approximately $25 million and would have added nearly 2 million cubic yards of new sand on the beach front. The success of the beach improvements would later be recognized by the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association when they awarded Fire Island with Best Resorted Beach in 2009. Unfortunately, in November of 2009, Hurricane Ida obliterated the beach front in Davis Park. Almost all of the work accomplished by the re-nourishment project in the spring was lost. The New York governor went as far as to ask the President (Barack Obama at the time) to declare a major federal disaster for the damages done to the barrier beaches.

Davis Park is comprised of one of the largest marinas on Fire Island, capable of holding up to 250 boats. Next to the marina is the Casino Café, one of the few restaurants on the island with an ocean-side view. Around the marina, you will find the Harbor store, a snack bar, bathroom facilities, and Casino Bar.

Relaxing Nature & History | Carmans River | Long Island, New York | Drone Photography

Carmans River, ten miles in length, is one of the four largest rivers on Long Island, NY????This part of the river ‘lower mill pond’ or the ‘lower lake’ runs through the historic district of Yaphank????In the 1700s, settlers dammed the river to build a sawmill, later adding a grist and bolting mill. Yaphank was originally known as ‘Millville’ due to its thriving and busting mills????Later the name was changed to Yaphank, deriving from the Native American word Yamphanke, which means “bank of a river.” Yaphank offers many sites to see in its historic district and surrounding areas????????
