The Hidden Korean Region in China | Yanji City - The Korean Enclave in China (延吉市)
I took a trip to a part of China that very few people know about - a 'Korean' part of China up in the northeast - a region called the 'Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture' (延边朝鲜族自治州, Yánbiān Cháoxiǎnzú Zìzhìzhōu) in eastern Jilin Province, right on the North Korean border.
As a person who has traveled extensively throughout China, I can easily notice a different atmosphere when walking through the streets of Yanji City (the capital of this Korean Automous Zone).
When you walk down the street, you'll hear locals chatting in Korean (they use the 'Hamgyong dialent' which is quite different to what is spoken in South Korea) and you'll see signs for Korean foods everywhere. Lengmian (cold noodles), kimchii, rice sausage, etc.
In this video, I show you around Yanji City and give some personal feelings and insights about the area.

Life on the North Korean Border in China: A Tour of Yanji in the Korean Autonomous Prefecture
Hey there guys! I can't believe it, but in just a week, I am going to be leaving China and moving to South Korea to start my graduate school education. On the way, I will be stopping by Japan to see a childhood friend of mine get married and hang out with some friends from college, and will be going back to Taiwan for a short bit! But before I go, I want to show you the place where I have been living for the past 7 months. It's been a bumpy ride (as you will know if you have watched my other videos!) but I really do love this city despite the difficulties I have had living here. I hope you all enjoy this video tribute to my second home, Yanji!

Yanji is the capital of Yanbian, the Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province, northeast China. Bordering North Korea (DPRK) and Russia, this is a fascinating area with a mishmash of Korean, Chinese and Russian cultures.
Yanji has become a hotspot for visitors from other parts of China these past few years. Despite being a small (for Chinese standards) city, it has its own airport with international flights to South Korea, and a high speed train station which has led to its increasing popularity.
The main gate you see here is of Yanbian University. The area around its campus is full of Korean style restaurants, coffee shops, internet cafés, etc. At times it feels like one is in Seoul. Yanji has too a North Korean hotel and several North Korean restaurants.

Yanjin: The Narrowest City In The World
Yanjin County, Zhaotong, Yunnan Province, China
This is a fun one!...
Every few months, a photo like this goes viral with a title like “the world’s narrowest city.” I’ve seen one too many not to dig in.
This is Yanjin County, China. Yes, it’s a real place. Yes, it looks like that. And yes, that’s awesome.
Yanjin is a city in Southern China in Yunnan province. The region is extremely mountainous with deep river gorges and steep cliffs. It sits between snowy Tibet and the jungles of Southeast Asia, a mixture of which probably provides the right image.
It’s very difficult to get around here. Modern China’s impressive engineering has made it easier, with supertall bridges and winding tunnels, but for centuries the highways were the rivers.
So it makes sense that towns were built along the river. Unfortunately, there’s just not a lot of space.
By the way, a whole lot of posts call this the Nanxi River. It’s not. It’s called the Heng.
Yanjin was a significant trading hub for resources like salt (I’m told that’s where it gets its name in Chinese – can anyone confirm?). The ancient Bo people lived here – they’re most famous for their precariously hanging coffins, but were unfortunately wiped out in the middle ages.
Over time, Yanjin grew and grew into the city it is today. (I say city, but the Chinese would consider this more of a town. It’s has an estimated population of 400,000 , but for China, whose top 50 cities all have over 2 million, that’s pretty light)
Buildings are built where possible, which is essentially between the river and the mountain, avoiding the one road that exists on either side. So the city expanded in the two ways it could: up and along. Anything close to the river is built on very tall pillars to prevent flooding, though floods and landslides do seem to be a persistent problem.
Yanjin doesn’t get as many visitors as the popularity of its photos might suggest, but if you’re in the area, there is a road in and out, and a train station on a rail route that looks like a trip on its own.
