Yabucoa Puerto Rico | Six Years After Hurricane María
On September 19, 2023 we visited the small town of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. The next day would mark the 6th anniversary of its head-on collision with hurricane María. María was a category 4 hurricane that plowed through Puerto Rico on the morning of September 20, 2017.
In many ways you can’t tell, because everything seems “normal”. The vegetation is green again. Utilities are back up and people seem to be living their lives like nothing happened. But it did happen and the signs are everywhere if you know where to look.
I made every effort to be kind with this town. After all, this was ground zero. I’ll show what’s “back to normal”, what needs improvement and what downright messed up. Why? Because that’s what we do. We tell it like is. But keep in mind that this town was brought to its knees just 6 years ago, so in many ways the recovery has been amazing.

Messy Suitcase Mini-Tour: Guayanés Beach in Yabucoa
Guayanés Beach, in Yabucoa on the southeast coast of Puerto Rico, was lovely, quiet, and peaceful, for most of the day. It even had bathrooms! It was a lovely crescent of sand and turquoise sea with lively waves. I walked down to one end and found the most beautiful seashells I have seen on any beach in Puerto Rico, including a sand dollar.
Mid-afternoon, the peace was broken when a rural Puerto Rican family arrived with their horses in a trailer, and inadvertently entertained us by riding back and forth along the beach, and even taking their horses into the waves for a swim! By mid-afternoon, they had set up a party, complete with blasting speaker, behind us by the parking lot.
About then, we noticed the ants under our feet in the grassy sand under a palm tree were starting to bite us viciously. We ended up with burning, itching bites and blisters on our feet for days.
I have a feeling that Guayanés Beach is a rollicking party on weekends! If you want quiet, weekday mornings are probably best. Just watch out for the red ants underfoot!

Hidden Lagoon of Punta Icacos | Travel Puerto Rico | Palmas del Mar and Yabucoa Best Hiking
Join me as we explore the lagoon hidden beneath the cliffs of Punta Icacos in Yabacoa, Puerto Rico. Located just outside the back gate of Palmas del Mar community are a series of hiking and biking trails. This hidden lagoon can best be accessed by hiking to Punta Icacos and climbing down the rocks.

I have lived in the nearby neighborhood of Palmas del Mar almost 5 years and spend many weekends hiking through the trails, but this was my first visit down the steep cliff walls down to the hidden lagoon.
Wear sturdy water shoes or hiking boots down the side of the rock cliff down to the water below. This adventure is best for physically fit adults that can swim. Climb and enter at your own risk.
The water is usually calmer in the early morning. Do NOT attempt this climb in rough seas or bad weather!
