The Long Island Rail Road (or LIRR) is a commuter rail that goes through Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. It's a great way to see the areas east of New York City (which is Long Island). I use it to go to Far Rockaway beach, Citifield for a Mets game, and Billie Jean King/Arthur Ashe for the US Open Tennis. But how do you take the LIRR? How do you ride the Long Island Rail Road? In this video, I'm going to cover everything you need to know about the Long Island Rail Road — from defining what it is to buying a ticket from a machine or phone, finding and boarding your train, figuring out transfers, and so much more. Today I walk around Huntington village and I actually try out my new mic for the first time. I think the mic works really well and blocks out that annoying wind noise. I barely heard any wind in this video, which is awesome!

In 1653, three men from Oyster Bay, Richard Holbrook, Robert Williams and Daniel Whitehead, purchased a parcel of land from the Matinecock tribe. This parcel has since come to be known as the First Purchase and included land bordered by Cold Spring Harbor on the west, Northport Harbor on the east, what is now known as Old Country Road to the south and Long Island Sound to the north. The three men immediately turned the land over to the settlers who had already been living there.[3]

From that initial settlement, Huntington grew over subsequent years to include all of the land presently comprising the modern Towns of Huntington and Babylon. The southern part of the town was formally separated to create Babylon in 1872.[3]
Because Huntington was populated largely by English settlers, unlike the rest of the New Amsterdam colony, the town voted in 1660 to become part of the Connecticut colony rather than remain under the authority of New Amsterdam. It was not until the British gained control of New Amsterdam in 1664 (renaming it New York) that Huntington was formally restored to the jurisdiction of New York.[3]
Following the Battle of Long Island during the American Revolutionary War, British troops used Huntington as their headquarters, and remained encamped there until the end of the war.[3]
The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1867 transformed the economy of Huntington from primarily agriculture and shipping (based on its well protected harbor) to tourism and commuting. Cold Spring Harbor became a popular summer resort.[3]
The end of World War II brought about an explosive growth of population in Huntington, as in the rest of the region. Farms and resorts gave way to homes, and Huntington has transformed into a major bedroom community for nearby New York City.[3]

Lake Montauk
Lake Montauk is a 900-acre (360 ha) artificial embayment in Montauk, New York that is home to the largest commercial and sporting fish fleets in the state of New York.
The lake was originally referred to on maps as Lake Wyandanch and commonly referred to as the Great Lake. It was the largest body of freshwater on Long Island, more than double the size of Lake Ronkonkoma. In 1927, real estate developer Carl Fisher blasted a gap on the northern shoreline to connect the lake to Block Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
Fisher intended to develop the new port of Montauk into the Miami Beach of the North. On Star Island, a small island in the lake, he built the Montauk Yacht Club and Star Island Casino. His other projects included the hotel Montauk Manor, Montauk Playhouse, the golf course Montauk Downs, and the six-story Montauk tower. Fisher renamed the lake Lake Montauk.
After Fisher opened and dredged the lake, the lake replaced Fort Pond Bay as Montauk's main port (Fort Pond Bay is notoriously shallow and rocky with one of its more famous groundings being HMS Culloden during the American Revolution).
Fisher's enterprises became bankrupt after the Crash of 1929. The United States Navy assumed control of the lake during World War II along with other Fisher businesses including Montauk Manor.

Montauk, New York
Montauk is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of East Hampton in Suffolk County, New York, on the eastern end of the South Shore of Long Island. As of the 2010 United States census, the CDP's population was 3,326.
The CDP encompasses an area that stretches approximately 13 miles (21 km) from Napeague, New York, to the easternmost tip of New York State at Montauk Point Light. The hamlet encompasses a small area about halfway between the two points.
Located at the tip of the South Fork peninsula of Long Island, 118 miles (190 km) east of Midtown Manhattan, Montauk has been used as an Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force base. The Montauk Point Light was the first lighthouse in New York state and is the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States.
Montauk is a major tourist destination and has six state parks. It is particularly famous for its fishing, claiming to have more world saltwater fishing records than any other port in the world. Located 20 miles (32 km) off the Connecticut coast, it is home to the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York state.

Visitors can sit down for a casual breakfast, lunch and dinner at Star Island Grill, serving fresh locally caught seafood. Spend Saturday nights at Star Island Grill for live poolside music and dancing overlooking Lake Montauk and the ocean.
