Whittlesey, historically known as Whittlesea or Witesie, is an ancient Fenland market town about 6 miles east of Peterborough, in the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire in England. With the neighbouring villages of Coates, Eastrea, Pondersbridge and Turves, it had a population of 16,058 at the 2011 Census.
Whittlesey is located between the city of Peterborough, 6 miles (10 km) to the west and the town of March, 11 miles (18 km) to the east, and is bordered to the north by the River Nene and to the south by Whittlesey Dyke. Historically it was connected to Peterborough and March by the Roman road Fen Causeway constructed in the first century AD, a route approximately followed by the modern A605.
The rail station is on the Ely to Peterborough Line (historically the Great Eastern Line), with direct trains to Cambridge, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leicester, Stansted Airport, Ely, Ipswich and Peterborough. Whittlesey appears in the Cartularium Saxonicum (973 A.D.) as Witlesig, in the Domesday Book as Witesie.
Whittlesey was also infamous for its number of public houses; folk lore dictates that, at one time, there were 52 - one for each week of the year. In 1797, a local farmer, when writing his diary, noted that 'they like drinking better than fighting in Whittlesea'. In other history, Whittlesey was an important trade route in the late Bronze Age (about 1100-800 BC), where civilisations traded with many places, including the Balkans. Such evidence is clear at the important archeological site of Must Farm, where log boats, roundhouses, bowls with food in them, and the most complete wooden wheel were housed.
The Market Place, located in the centre of Whittlesey, is still the site of the town's market, held every Friday. A right to hold a weekly market was first granted in 1715, although there have been several periods since then during which the market did not function, for example from the late 1700s until c. 1850. Because of the nearby city of Peterborough, the market is no longer of great importance to the town.
The 'Whittlesey Summer Festival', held annually in September, takes over much of the town centre. Attractions in recent years included a large classic car display, a large Italian Food stall, fairground rides, a steam engine, and in 2009, a flying display by a Hawker Hurricane of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. An art competition, for students of Sir Harry Smith Community College also runs with the festival, with entries displayed throughout the day in the Whittlesey Christian Church. 2009 also saw the people of Whittlesey raise £10,000 for bushfire victims in Whittlesea, Melbourne.
The town has one secondary school, Sir Harry Smith Community College (opened in 1953 on the site of Whittlesey Workhouse), and three primary schools. There is also another primary school in the neighbouring village of Coates. Whittlesey Museum is located in the Old Town Hall and contains collections relating to the natural and cultural heritage of Whittlesey and the surrounding area.

Video recorded in Peterborough Cambridgeshire 3rd January 2023. We took a walk around Peterborough and enjoyed looking around the Cathedral Quarter, the River and the Museum.
Fenland BusFest 2023 hosted by Eastern Bus Enthusiasts
Vintage buses feature at the 2023 Fenland BusFest which took place in lovely spring sunshine at Whittlesey Market Place which ensured a good turn out for those who wished to enjoy a trip around the local area and a pub lunch.
There were around 40 buses in attendance from Olympians, Bedfords to Bristols so plenty to chose from for a trip along the usual routes:-

345-Whittlesey-Thorney (Rose & Crown)
350-Whittlesey-Turves (Three Horseshoes)
701-Whittlesey-Peterborough.
These routes were designed to enable you to hop off and enjoy lunch at any one a number of delightful pubs along the way and at Ramsey there was the classic car show, Fen Fair and RuralMuseum to visit. So plenty of things to see and do.
The action begins at Whittlesey to see some of the early trips departing. The action moves around the town with some of the buses arriving back at the bus station in Whittlesey.
I had to leave early on the 701 back to Peterborough Bus Station where Southern National 934 can be seen.
I think you will agree there was a fantastic selection of buses and coaches so thanks to all the owners and the organisers for their hard work in putting on this event.

The East of England is one of the nine official regions of England. This region was created in 1994 and was adopted for statistics purposes from 1999. It includes the ceremonial counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Essex has the highest population in the region.
The population of the East of England region in 2018 was 6.24 million. Bedford, Luton, Basildon, Peterborough, Southend-on-Sea, Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester, Chelmsford and Cambridge are the region's most populous towns. The southern part of the region lies in the London commuter belt.The East of England region has the lowest elevation range in the UK. Twenty percent of the region is below mean sea level, most of this in North Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, and on the Essex Coast. Most of the remaining area is of low elevation, with extensive glacial deposits. The Fens, a large area of reclaimed marshland, are mostly in North Cambridgeshire. The Fens include the lowest point in the country in the village of Holme: 2.75 metres (9.0 ft) below mean sea level. This area formerly included the body of open water known as Whittlesey Mere. The highest point in the region is at Clipper Down at 817 ft (249 m) above mean sea level, in the far southwestern corner of the region in the Ivinghoe Hills.
Communities known as New Towns, responses to urban congestion and World War II destruction, appeared in Basildon and Harlow (Essex), as well as in Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead (Hertfordshire), in the 1950s and 1960s. In the late 1960s, the Roskill Commission considered Cublington in Buckinghamshire, Thurleigh in Bedfordshire, Nuthampstead in Hertfordshire and Foulness in Essex as locations for a possible third airport for London. A new airport was not built, but a former Royal Air Force base at Stansted, which had previously been converted to civilian use redeveloped and expanded in the following decades.

The East of England succeeded the standard statistical region East Anglia (excluding Essex, Hertfordshire or Bedfordshire then in the South East). The East of England civil defence region was identical to today's region.
East Anglia and overlap with Home Counties
Since post-Roman times (6th Century), England between the Wash and just south of the town of Colchester has been known as East Anglia, including the county traversing the west of this line, Cambridgeshire. The inclusion of Essex as part of East Anglia is open to debate, notably because it was a Saxon kingdom, separate from the kingdom of the East Angles.
Essex, despite meaning East-Saxons, previously formed part of the South East England, as did Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, a mixture of definite and debatable Home Counties. The earliest use of the term is from 1695. Charles Davenant, in An essay upon ways and means of supplying the war, wrote, The Eleven Home Counties, which are thought in Land Taxes to pay more than their proportion... then cited a list including these four. The region's Manufacturing Advisory Service is at Melbourn in Cambridgeshire, off the A10 and north of Royston. UK Trade & Investment for the region is in Histon with its international trade team based next to Magdalene College.

Cambridge, Ely, & Littleport (England Travel Vlog - Part 1)
Our recent trip to England started out with a weekend getaway to Cambridge, Ely, & Littleport. Some of the highlights include The Big Weekend in Cambridge, Ely Cathedral, and The Old School in Littleport. In the late 90s, I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall, so it was nice to return to the area and see how it has changed.
Of course, the blog starts off at the Denver airport and chronicles our journey to England. We arrived on Friday morning, but mostly recovered from jet lag and visited with relatives. Saturday morning, we got up and headed to Cambridge. We walked the streets and checked out some of the colleges and The Big Weekend Festival.
On Sunday, we explored The Old School which was built in 1847. In 1990, it was converted to townhomes and I bought one of them when I was stationed nearby. We stayed in another of The Old School townhomes which is now an art gallery and AirBNB (see below for details about the art gallery).
Before heading back to the London area, we took a tour of Ely cathedral and its Octagon Tower. This cathedral dates back to the 11th century and the tower was built in the 1300s.

I continue my pursuit of the historical, quirky and unusual features of the English countryside in the Fenlands of the eastern England. In doing so I reach lows in my motorcycling experience.
Passing through the village of Holme, I ride into the Holme Fen Nature Reserve and largest silver birch forest of lowland England There I visit the Holme Posts at the lowest land point in the UK, before riding along the lowest classified road in the UK.
The Fens are the naturally marshy region of eastern England, drained centuries ago, resulting in a flat, low-lying agricultural region supported by a system of drainage channels, man-made rivers and water pumping stations. The Fens have an atmosphere all of their own which I find fascinating.
One place in the Fens has been on my list to visit, and, well, that’s where I’m heading now. Thanks for joining me.

Fenland Bus Fest 2019 Whittlesey and Classic Car Show
Vintage bus action from the eighth Fenland Busfest and Classic Car Show 2019 is featured in this film as I made my first visit to the event. If you like London Routemasters there are several featured.
Around 40 preserved buses were on display in Market Street, Whittlesey with some departing on trips to Thorney, Turves, The Fenland Light Railway and the classic car show at Ramsey.
It was the first event in preservation for the Eastern Buses Enthusiasts 1982 Ex West Yorkshire Roe bodied Leyland Olympian UWW 10X and this was joined by its sister UWW 8X now with Confidence Buses which travelled from Leicester with a group of enthusiasts. But there was plenty of variety with Volvo, Leyland Olympians, Daimlers, Routemasters on display and running trips.
The action starts with Routemasters and a Leyland National arriving before the buses are seen at Market Place Whittlesey departing on trips. Then there is a brief look at the classic car show in Ramsey with some buses seen there and also a 1999 Scania making its rally debut and 1996 Volvo filmed at The Fenland Light Railway which is also briefly featured. It is then back to Whittlesey where the buses depart and arrive back from the afternoon trips. The film ends with an open top Volvo Olympian in Peterborough.
Many thanks to Eastern Bus Enthusiasts for their hard work in putting on this event and to all the bus owners who brought their buses for us to see and ride. A superb day out for the family.

Gedney Hill churchyard
A slightly longer tour of the churchyard at Gedney Hill, Lincolnshire. There is a new cemetery to the East of the church and beyond the old cemetery boundary. The churchyard around the church has been looked after ( i.e. the grass has been cut) but there are sadly many graves East of the church which are completely overgrown.
The World Conker Championships 2021
Over 2,000 people flocked to a small village in Northamptonshire, England to watch the return of the World Conker Championships.
Like many sporting traditions, last year’s Championships were cancelled due to the pandemic.
This year around 250 competitors took part - many sporting fancy dress costumes.
The game involves swinging a conker threaded on the end of a string at an opponent's conker with the aim of smashing it.
The game commences with a toss of a coin, the winner may elect to strike or receive. A distance of no less than 8” (20cm’s) of lace must be between the knuckle and nut. There is a gauge to measure this if disputed.
Each player takes three (3) alternate strikes at the opponent’s conker. If a player causes a knot of the laces (a snag) this is noted, three snags will lead to disqualification.
If the game lasts for more than five (5) minutes, play will be halted and the 5- 5-minute “rule” comes into effect. Each player is allowed up to nine further strikes. If the game is still going after nine strikes then the winner is the one who has hit the nut the most times.
In the final, it was local lad Ady Hurrell from Whittlesey near Peterborough who came out on top beating Danny Leslie, and in the Women’s final defending Champion Jasmine Tetley from Nottingham retained her title.
The annual World Conker Championships have been staged more often than both the Olympics and the Winter Olympics combined.
