New Zealand is one of the world’s best places to live and retire, best place to raise your family. It has a very pleasant climate, great beaches, a wide variety of outdoor activities, cultural attractions, free health care

New Zealand is comprised of two big islands called North Island and South Island, plus numerous smaller islands.
It is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and is very geographically isolated.
Its nearest neighbors are Australia, which is 1242 miles to the northwest, and New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga to the north.
The population of New Zealand is 4,334,000, the majority of whom are of European descent.

First time visiting WHANGAREI (Northland Region) | New Zealand

Whangarei is in the Northland region of New Zealand's North Island. It was our first time visiting Whangarei and we went there after our trip to Kawau Island in our previous vlog.

We drove to Whangarei from Paparoa which was where we our Airbnb was after Kawau Island:
(see a tour of the cabin towards the end of our previous vlog:

First stop in Whangarei was to get some food. We love Vietnamese food so when one of our awesome supporters recommended Mean's Vietnamese Cafe in his home city of Whangarei, we had to go try it out. It was exactly what we needed to kick start our day!

Mean's Vietnamese Cafe
Address: 13 Rathbone Street, Whangārei 0110
Hours: Tue Sat 11am–2:45pm, 5–8:45pm
Sun 12pm–2:45pm, 5–7:45pm
Mon Closed

Our next stop was to Kiwi North, a unique and educational place where we were able to see a young 10 year old tuatara and two very cute kiwi birds. Kiwi North play a very important role in the conservation of kiwi birds. They look after and raise the young chicks to maturity before they are released to a sanctuary or a facility where they're bred. Kiwi North is Northland's only Kiwi house and they also have a museum and heritage park all in the same complex which makes it a great place for learning and spending a few hours at.

Kiwi North: Museum, Kiwi House and Heritage Park

Address: 500 State Highway 14, Maunu, Whangārei 0179
Hours: Mon–Sun 10am–4pm

Our Whangarei accommodation was a super clean, modern, self-contained unit that had its own off-street parking, private entrance and deck too. The space was conveniently close to Whangarei Falls and the city centre making it such a great stay for the two of us.

Lynette's Airbnb

The next day after checking out of Lynette's place, we visited one of Whangarei's most popular attractions, Otuihau Whangarei Falls. A majestic and very scenic waterfall with a short looped walk. We loved that you could see this waterfall from all angles. A great spot for photos too.

Our final stop in Whangarei before we returned to Auckland was Mount Parihaka an ancient volcano and said to be once the largest fortified pā in New Zealand. There are native bush walking tracks that reach the summit which require varying fitness levels depending on the track. However, we drove to the top via Memorial Drive, parked there then walked a flight of stairs to get to the viewing platform. Mt Parihaka Lookout had great scenic views of Whangarei city and harbour.

Northland's capital has a stunning little marina and harbour that you can walk around in an hour-long loop, coffee in hand.

New Zealand has plenty of small towns, that frankly, most of us drive right through.

But if you take a closer look, these smaller centres have some hidden gems. And the best bit is they don't come with hefty prices you see in tourist hotspots like Rotorua or Queenstown.

Top Things To Do in Whangarei with a baby | Whangarei travel guide

Whangarei, just over 160km up north from Auckland, is a popular stopover for a weekend getaway in the Bay of Islands. During peak hours, you may experience heavy traffic on high way 1, if that’s the case, use an alternative route via Kaipara Coast Highway. A scenic route that guarantees 2 hours of New Zealand’s beautiful landscapes.

First stop, to the visitor centre in town. It’s a busy little shop that’s packed with information on New Zealand. Grab some brochures and plan out your trip from there.

Whangarei Falls
We were very fortunate to be able to find accommodation so close to New Year’s Eve. Whangarei Falls Holiday Park is only 300m from Whangarei Falls. We stayed in a little cabin this time, cosy and simple.

It’s a short easy hike to the base of the waterfall with our 10 months old baby. You’ll be walking on paved roads and stairs, which makes it very achievable for parents with a baby carrier. Even if you’re not prepared for a work out, standing above the falls at the lookout platform is a pretty amazing experience on its own.

Town Basin Marina Village
Take a stroll along the river on a Saturday morning, and check out their Artisans Fair Local Market on Canopy Bridge. Talented teens put on a small live performance and brings up the atmosphere. Try some Hangi or seafood chowder from the locals, they’re authentic and rich in flavours

Whangarei Quarry Gardens
With a gold coin donation, this is a great place for a morning walk. Admire a variety of plantations along the pathway, which will lead you to a small lake.

Natural Fizzy Spring
You may not come by this place as an attraction, but this is quite a natural wonder to watch on the side of a busy highway.
It’s not clearly marked with signage, so we actually spent a little time looking for it. It’s right here..

Paihia
If you love the water, Paihia is your haven! Swim with dolphins, Take a cruise to Hole in the Rock, Snorkel in the pristine water of Bay of Islands, Hire a jetski and Book a scenic flight! This is the ultimate place to treat yourself.

Haruru Falls
Stop by Haruru Falls, my favourite waterfall so far. An easy short walk and you can get up close to the waterfall.

Waitangi Treaty Grounds
This museum will tell you all about New Zealand’s history. Visit the Treaty Grounds, and stay for a Maori cultural show.

KeriKeri Rainbow Falls
Very similar to Whangarei Falls, this is an easy 10 minutes hike to the swimming hole at the base of the falls.

KeriKeri Charlie’s Rock
A small natural pool by the lake, loved by the locals.

Whangārei
Major centre for Northland, and its only city. In 2013 its population was 49,161.

Nestled in a broad valley between hills to its west and east, the city lies on a long inlet of Whangārei Harbour on Northland’s east coast. Initially a service centre for the surrounding district, it has developed through its proximity to some of the country’s deepest harbour waters, and through the north’s expanding tourism.

Top 10 Things To Do in WHANGANUI!

Wondering what to do when you're in Whanganui? Here are ten of my favourite activities that you can enjoy while you're in 'The River City'.

The heart of Whanganui is the Whanganui River, and it's the perfect place to start your exploration. Try renting a couple of electric bicycles and cycling past the beautiful Upokangoro bridge to Mosquito Point, the best place to swim in the river. If you don't feel like getting wet, try taking a ride on the Waimarie - New Zealand's only remaining coal powered paddle steamer.

Another iconic location in Whanganui is the Durie Hill Memorial Tower and Elevator. Take a walk through the long tunnel that leads to the elevator, ride up and then enjoy the views from the tower!

Next, spend some time in Rotokowau / Virgina Lake Reserve, where you can feed the ducks or take a look at the Winter Gardens.

If it's a Saturday when you're visiting, be sure to experience the River Traders Market where you'll find food stalls, crafts and live music every weekend. The market is also a good place to set off from on a tour of Whanganui's many murals and street art.

A little outside of town you can find the extensive Paloma Gardens or the fully predator fenced Bushy Park, depending on whether you prefer your nature wild or tamed.

Whanganui has lovely black sand beaches to visit too - try the Castlecliff Beach in the suburb of the same name, or drive a little further to Kai Iwi Beach, with its impressive sandstone cliffs.

Last up, spend an afternoon or an evening in the Drews Avenue precinct with its colourful buildings, streetside seating, gardens and cafes. Drews Avenue is also where you'll find my favourite bar in Whanganui - Porridge Watson!
