Places to see in ( Cobham - UK )

Places to see in ( Cobham - UK )

Cobham is a village in the Borough of Elmbridge in Surrey, England, centred 17 miles south-west of London and 10 miles northeast of Guildford on the River Mole. It has a commercial/services High Street, a significant number of primary and private schools and the Painshill landscape park.

Cobham is an ancient settlement whose origins can be traced back on the ground through Roman times to the Iron Age. It lay within the Elmbridge hundred. Cobham appears in Domesday Book as Covenham and was held by Chertsey Abbey. Historically, Cobham other than outlying farms comprised two developed areas, Street Cobham and Church Cobham. The former lay on the Portsmouth-London Road, and the building now known as the Cobham Exchange was once a coaching inn. The latter grew up around St. Andrew's Church, which dates from the 12th century.

Cobham fits into a triangle between the River Mole to the south, the A3 to the north and a borderline for the most part on the nearside of the (New) London to Guildford railway line to the southeast – directly west of Oxshott. On the southern border is the historic village, Stoke D'Abernon, part of the small post town, which gives its name to the railway station between the two areas on the line mentioned: Cobham and Stoke D'Abernon.

At the heart of Cobham is the Church Cobham Conservation Area, which was designated in 1973 and includes fourteen statutory listed buildings. Amongst these are Pyports, once the home of Vernon Lushington; the picturesque Church Stile House; and two fine houses overlooking the River Mole: Ham Manor and Cedar House, the latter owned by the National Trust.

Across the river from the church into Downside village, the estate of Cobham Park was the home of John Ligonier, 1st Earl Ligonier, who was made Commander-in-Chief of the army in 1757. In 1806 Cobham Park was bought by Harvey Christian Combe a brewer and Lord Mayor of London. The present house was completed in 1873 by his nephew, Charles Combe, to a design by Edward Middleton Barry: it has now been divided into apartments. At the other end of the village, beside the A3, Painshill Park is a fine 18th-century landscape garden, restored from dereliction since 1980. Painshill House dates from the 18th century and has also been divided into apartments.

Two other large houses on the outskirts of Cobham have been taken over by schools: Heywood is now the American Community School, and Burwood House is now Notre Dame School. Chelsea F.C.'s training ground is nearby, close to Cobham and Stoke d'Abernon railway station and some of its more deluxe private homes belong to Chelsea's players. The Fairmile or eastern part of the parish has a high proportions of mansions and gated roads.

The River Mole provides a setting for Cobham's best-known landmark which is the red brick water mill, constructed Late 18C and once part of a much larger complex. Thereafter, the Cobham Mill Preservation Trust was formed as a sister organisation to the Cobham Conservation Group and took over the leasehold. The building was restored to full working order by the volunteers of the Cobham Mill Preservation Trust, and first opened to the public in 1993. Cobham Mill is now open to the public from 2 pm to 5 pm on the second Sunday of each month between April and October, inclusive.

To the north and west of the town is the A3 trunk road, a major arterial route from London to Portsmouth. This road links to the M25 motorway at Junction 10, immediately to the southwest of Cobham. The A307, Portsmouth Road starts in Cobham and runs northwards to the adjoining town of Esher. This is also known as the old A3. The A245 runs through the centre of the town and leads to Leatherhead in the south-east and Byfleet to the west. Cobham & Stoke d'Abernon railway station, opened in 1885, is on the New Guildford Line from London Waterloo.

( Cobham - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Cobham . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Cobham - UK

map of North West England

North West England is one of the best and most popular of nine official regions of England and consists of the administrative counties of #1 ranked Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside. The North West had a population of 7,052,000 in 2011. It is the third-most-populated region in the United Kingdom, after the South East and Greater London. The largest settlements are Manchester and Liverpool. North West England is bounded to the east by the Pennines and to the west by the Irish Sea. The region extends from the Scottish Borders in the north to the West Midlands region in the south. To its southwest is North Wales. Amongst the better known of the North West's physiographical features are the Lake District and the Cheshire Plain. The highest point in North West England (and the highest peak in England) is Scafell Pike, Cumbria, at a height of 3,209 feet (978 m).

Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, while Broad Crag Tarn on Broad Crag is England's highest lake. Wast Water is England's deepest lake, being 74 metres deep.

A mix of rural and urban landscape, two large conurbations, centred on Liverpool and Manchester, occupy much of the south of the region. The north of the region, comprising Cumbria and northern Lancashire, is largely rural, as is the far south which encompasses parts of the Cheshire Plain and Peak District.

The region includes parts of three National parks (all of the Lake District, and small parts of the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales) and three areas of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (all of Arnside and Silverdale and the Solway Coast, and almost all of the Forest of Bowland The North West is generally regarded as having the most average weather in the UK. Temperatures are generally close to the national average. Cumbria usually experiences the most severe weather, with high precipitation in the mountainous regions of the Lake District and Pennines. In winter, the most severe weather occurs in the more exposed and elevated areas of the North West, once again mainly the Lake District and Pennine areas.

Parts of the North West experienced a White Christmas in 2009, and again in 2010, where sleet and snow fell on December 25.

The A635 was closed for almost a month in January 2010 due to high amounts of snowfall.

Places to see in ( Whittlesey - UK )

Places to see in ( Whittlesey - UK )

Whittlesey, historically known as Whittlesea or Witesie, is an ancient Fenland market town about 6 miles east of Peterborough, in the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire in England. With the neighbouring villages of Coates, Eastrea, Pondersbridge and Turves, it had a population of 16,058 at the 2011 Census.

Whittlesey is located between the city of Peterborough, 6 miles (10 km) to the west and the town of March, 11 miles (18 km) to the east, and is bordered to the north by the River Nene and to the south by Whittlesey Dyke. Historically it was connected to Peterborough and March by the Roman road Fen Causeway constructed in the first century AD, a route approximately followed by the modern A605.

The rail station is on the Ely to Peterborough Line (historically the Great Eastern Line), with direct trains to Cambridge, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leicester, Stansted Airport, Ely, Ipswich and Peterborough. Whittlesey appears in the Cartularium Saxonicum (973 A.D.) as Witlesig, in the Domesday Book as Witesie.

Whittlesey was also infamous for its number of public houses; folk lore dictates that, at one time, there were 52 - one for each week of the year. In 1797, a local farmer, when writing his diary, noted that 'they like drinking better than fighting in Whittlesea'. In other history, Whittlesey was an important trade route in the late Bronze Age (about 1100-800 BC), where civilisations traded with many places, including the Balkans. Such evidence is clear at the important archeological site of Must Farm, where log boats, roundhouses, bowls with food in them, and the most complete wooden wheel were housed.

The Market Place, located in the centre of Whittlesey, is still the site of the town's market, held every Friday. A right to hold a weekly market was first granted in 1715, although there have been several periods since then during which the market did not function, for example from the late 1700s until c. 1850. Because of the nearby city of Peterborough, the market is no longer of great importance to the town.

The 'Whittlesey Summer Festival', held annually in September, takes over much of the town centre. Attractions in recent years included a large classic car display, a large Italian Food stall, fairground rides, a steam engine, and in 2009, a flying display by a Hawker Hurricane of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. An art competition, for students of Sir Harry Smith Community College also runs with the festival, with entries displayed throughout the day in the Whittlesey Christian Church. 2009 also saw the people of Whittlesey raise £10,000 for bushfire victims in Whittlesea, Melbourne.

The town has one secondary school, Sir Harry Smith Community College (opened in 1953 on the site of Whittlesey Workhouse), and three primary schools. There is also another primary school in the neighbouring village of Coates. Whittlesey Museum is located in the Old Town Hall and contains collections relating to the natural and cultural heritage of Whittlesey and the surrounding area.

BOLTON Walking Tour | QUEENS PARK. England, UK

Relaxing and walking around Queens Park, Bolton. My Adventure Planet

Traditional Victorian park just a few minutes' walk from Bolton town centre with ornamental gardens, lake, bowling green and play areas.

The park of woodland, grassland and lakes. Queens Park is a public park designed by William Henderson and opened in 1866 which, although many of the built structures have been lost, retains most of the principal design elements.

Queen's Park is situated 0.7km north-west of Bolton town centre in an area which is residential on the north and west sides.

To the east is the site of Bolton Royal Infirmary (demolished) and there are playing fields and a gasworks to the south.

The boundaries are formed by Chorley New Road to the north, Westgate Avenue and private gardens backing from Park Road to the west, Park Road and the River Croal to the south and the perimeter of the former hospital grounds and private dwellings to the east.

The site slopes down to the River Croal from the north.

There are two principal entrances to the park, one on Chorley New Road with a lodge with gates and gate piers and also when the boundary with the road was sheltered by trees.

On the south-west side there is an entrance with a lodge and stone gate piers with splayed flanking walls surmounted by railings on Park Road.

There are various other informal entrances to the park including one at the south-east corner via a footbridge over the Croal.

A roughly oval path encloses the more formal inner area and connects with sinuous paths leading through the remainder of the site.

The Chorley New Road entrance leads to lawns immediately south of the road, where a Cenotaph is situated 75m south-west of the entrance.

A path leads south from the entrance between elongated rectangular beds, to a sunken circular parterre with a system of circular beds, reached by sets of stone steps leading down from a circular perimeter path.

At the south end of the garden, set into the slope between sets of steps, the bank is planted with mass bedding to form the name of Bolton's current mayor, following a tradition which began when the park opened.

A path leads south from the formal garden to an area of informal beds.
The path continues to a terraced walk running east/west which gives views over falling ground to the south and east.

The walk is backed (on the north side) by beds and a shrubbery, and there are three statues (all listed grade II) on tall plinths positioned within the beds.

From west to east they represent: J T Fielding, erected in 1896; Benjamin Disraeli in Garter robes; and James Dorrian, MP.

The east end of the walk terminates with a semicircular bastion which acts as a viewing point from which Bolton’s Town Hall (1866-73, listed grade II) and other buildings are partially visible through a screen of mature trees.

At the west end of the walk, steps lead down to connect with curving paths around the site.
In the centre of the walk, stone steps link with an axial path running southwards down a grassed slope.

At the south end of the path more stone steps lead down to a circular flower bed with a stone kerb.
The west side of the park consists of curving walks leading between banks planted with trees.

In the north-west corner of the park is the infilled site of a small serpentine lake, which connected with a second lake of serpentine shape, which has the remains of a cascade at its west end leading to a larger lake with two islands and an irregular shoreline.

This was connected by a culverted stream to a series of three more lakes and ponds, all with irregular outlines, curving around the western and southern sides of the site.

Immediately south of the west end of the terraced walk there is an area with tiered seating set into the slope.

The east side of the park has a system of curved walks through banks planted with trees, as on the west side, but the planting is not as dense and there are areas of open grassland.

An area 100m north-east of the former cafe is in use as tennis courts and as a car park. Some 70m east of this is a bowling green with a pavilion at its north end.
