Według kronikarza o. Grzegorza Gdańskiego to zdanie wypowiedziane przez Jakuba Wejhera było początkiem dziejów Wejherowo. Źródła historyczne podają, że osada Wejherowska Wola (Weiherfrai) dająca początki miastu Wejherowo, została utworzona decyzją Jakuba Wejhera 28 maja 1643 roku.
Powstanie miasta związane było pośrednio z wyprawą króla Władysława IV pod Smoleńsk, w której przyszły założyciel Wejherowa brał udział. W czasie oblężenia białoruskiego miasteczka Biała w 1634 roku Jakub Wejher został przysypany gruzami na skutek wybuchu. Uczynił wtedy śluby, że jeśli wyjdzie z tej opresji cało, wybuduje w swych dobrach kościół ku czci Trójcy Przenajświętszej i założy klasztor. Dziewięć lat później, 28.05.1643 r., fundacja ta stała się początkiem założenia osady, która 13 stycznia 1650 r. zyskała lokacyjny przywilej miejski nadany przez króla polskiego Władysława IV. Miasto Wejherowo było jedynym na Kaszubach miastem prywatnym. Otrzymało prawo chełmińskie, które było ostatnią lokacją tego typu na Pomorzu.
W założonej w swych dobrach osadzie Jakub Wejher wzniósł w 1643 r. kościół Trójcy Przenajświętszej (farny, wielokrotnie przebudowywany) i w latach 1648-1651 kościół klasztorny pw. św. Anny - ojców franciszkanów, który przetrwał wraz z bogato wyposażonym wnętrzem z XVIII wieku. Zainicjował też budowę słynnej Kalwarii Wejherowskiej z 19 kaplicami zbudowanymi w latach 1649-1664. Kilka z nich wybudował na własny koszt, pozostałe ufundowali członkowie jego rodu i dworzanie. Obecnie jest ich 25, rozłożonych na morenowych wzgórzach po południowej stronie miasta. Najmłodsza z kaplic – Brama Oliwska powstała w XIX wieku, uważana jest powszechnie za 26. kaplicę Kalwarii Wejherowskiej.
Również historia ratusza sięga połowy XVII wieku. Pierwszy ratusz wybudowany z drewna przetrwał około stu lat i w jego miejscu wybudowano ratusz murowany, który przetrwał do 1906 roku. Ze względu na postępujące z biegiem lat zniszczenia i oberwanie sufitu, został on na początku bieżącego wieku rozebrany. Nowo wybudowany w stylu XVIII-wiecznej architektury ratusz, został oddany na siedzibę władz miejskich w 1908 roku. W 2003 roku ratusz przeszedł gruntowaną modernizację za co miasto Wejherowo otrzymało I miejsce w Ogólnopolskim Konkursie „Najlepsza Modernizacja Roku 2004” wśród miast do 100 tys. mieszkańców - w kategorii Zabytek. Dodajmy, że na wieży ratusza znajduje się zabytkowy dzwon ufundowany przez Jakuba Wejhera z inskrypcją założyciela miasta i jego małżonki Elżbiety z rodu Shaffgotsch.
Na początku XIX wieku, po wojnach napoleońskich, nastąpił rozwój miasta. Po zajęciu miasta przez Prusaków zmieniono jego nazwę na Neustadt (Nowe Miasto), które od 1818 r. stało się siedzibą landrata. Wejherowo było również siedzibą powiatu, który objął także miasto Sopot, Puck oraz Półwysep Helski. W roku 1887 na tym terenie powstały 2 powiaty. Podział ten utrzymał się do 1920 r. W 1928 r. powiaty wejherowski i pucki połączyły się znowu tworząc Powiat Morski. Obecnie powiaty wejherowski i pucki funkcjonują osobno.
Od 10 lutego 1920 roku rozpoczyna się nowy rozdział w historii miasta. Skończył się okres zaborów i Wejherowo znowu stało się polskie.
W mieście stacjonował od 1931 roku Pierwszy Morski Batalion Strzelców, który pod dowództwem płk. Kazimierza Pruszkowskiego walczył we wrześniu 1939 roku z hitlerowskim najeźdźcą.
W czasie II wojny światowej hitlerowcy zamordowali wielu działaczy niepodległościowych, przedstawicieli inteligencji i antyfaszystów. Las Piaśnicki kryje szczątki wielu tysięcy ofiar terroru hitlerowskiego. Jedną z ofiar jest błogosławiona s. Alicja Kotowska.
Wyzwolenia spod okupacji hitlerowskiej Wejherowo doczekało się 12 marca 1945 roku. Decyzja o rozpoczęciu budowy Elektrowni Jądrowej w Żarnowcu w połowie lat siedemdziesiątych XX wieku spowodowała rozwój budownictwa mieszkaniowego w Wejherowie.

A Belarusian village in Poland?
Somewhere in Eastern Poland or more precisely in the Podlaskie region something very special is located. You probably have never heard of this region before since most people visit Krakow, Gdansk or Warsaw when they come to Poland.
Come with me to visit three fascinating fairytale villages in the Land of Open Shutters.
The Land of Open Shutters boasts unique wooden architecture – houses with incredibly intricate decorations and vividly colourful window shutters, which remain open all the time. Characteristic of traditional Russian folk house-building, these extraordinary ornaments are not to be found in other regions of Poland. The population of this part of Podlaskie is mainly Orthodox, of Belarussian descent. They still follow centuries-old folk traditions, which is clearly visible in architecture, religious rites and local dialect.

Wejherowska'a Calvary is situated in Wejherowo (Pomorian province) and is one of the most northern - situated Sanctuary of the Passion in Poland.
The most popular attraction in Wejherowo is the Calvary of Wejherowo. Wejherowska Calvary is a complex of 26 chapels located on moraine hills built in XVII century. It is the pearl of sacral architecture of Northern Poland and next to Zebrzydowska's Calvary it is the oldest Passion sanctusry in Poland.
