War, WV....WOW!! This is one of the most poverty stricken cities in the country! Located in McDowell County, West Virginia, this city has an estimated population of 662 and has a poverty rate of 49.5%! Driving through some of these Appalachian areas look like a war zone. On the flip side, the people for the most part were extremely friendly and crime is extremely low in this area. War was a former coal and timber camp, it was nicknamed Miner's City. After the war on coal and collapse of the economy, this place has been left devastated. The average income is less than $16,500 dollars per year. Let's take a drive and check some of it out!

We analyzed cities in West Virginia with a population of more than 5,000 using the latest FBI crime data.

A Victorian City in Appalachia | Wheeling, WV
Although we are technically no longer in the Midwest region of the US, we still continue our March through the Midwest trip towards a rightful finish over these next few destinations. Arriving in the state of West Virginia, one might think of the stereotypical coal mines and poverty. However on a visit to the small city of Wheeling, located in West Virginia's northern panhandle, that perception can be thrown out the window. Through an exploration of the many cultural sites of this formerly industrial city, one may get the impression of Wheeling as a city of class and sophistication. It owes a lot of its beauty to the abundance of victorian-style architecture, being able to claim the title of city with the most Victorian architecture anywhere in America. On our visit here, we get the opportunity to learn about the history of West Virginia's statehood, admire a bit of this captivating urban landscape, and even receive insight about this area from a passerby I was lucky enough to meet!

I Drove Through Berwind, West Virginia | Heres What I Saw
Berwind, WV...wow! This is such a beautiful place gone bad. With the closing of the coal mines, this McDowell County town has suffered greatly and a recovery is not exactly within sight. Currently Berwind has a population of 170 and declining each year. Many dilapidated homes just abandoned, can it be saved? Let's take a drive and check some of it out!

West Virginia is a state in the Southern United States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north and east, Maryland to the east and northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. West Virginia is the 10th-smallest state by area and ranks as the 12th-least populous state, with a population of 1,793,716 residents. The capital and largest city is Charleston which has a population of 49,055.
West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key border state during the American Civil War. It was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, one of two states (along with Nevada) admitted to the Union during the Civil War, and the second state to separate from another state, after Maine separated from Massachusetts in 1820. Some of its residents held slaves, but most were yeoman farmers, and the delegates provided for the gradual abolition of slavery in the new state constitution. The state legislature abolished slavery in the state, and at the same time ratified the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery nationally on February 3, 1865.
West Virginia's Northern Panhandle extends adjacent to Pennsylvania and Ohio to form a tristate area, with Wheeling, Weirton, and Morgantown just across the border from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Huntington in the southwest is close to Ohio and Kentucky, while Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry in the Eastern Panhandle region are considered part of the Washington metropolitan area, between Maryland and Virginia. West Virginia is often included in several U.S. geographical regions, including the Mid-Atlantic, the Upland South, and the Southeastern United States. It is the only state entirely within the area served by the Appalachian Regional Commission; the area is commonly defined as Appalachia.
The state is noted for its mountains and rolling hills, its historically significant coal mining and logging industries, and its political and labor history. It is also known for a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and hunting.
