S1 – Ep 348 – Warrenton – A Wonderfully Operational Train Station!

Our trip to Warrenton in the Northern Cape was an awesome experience, despite arriving in the dark once again and just as loadshedding struck. We indulged in delicious Portuguese food from O Galo, before settling into our accommodation. The next morning, we were finally able to witness the beauty of the place, and it did not disappoint. After a delightful cup of coffee, we made our way to the Vaal River, a mere 200 meters from our unit, and were awestruck by its stunning vistas. Exploring the town was a delight, as we encountered a charming old steam engine, the historic old bridge, a wonderfully operational train station, and the intriguing old blockhouse near the railway bridge. Overall, our visit to Warrenton was a fantastic experience filled with captivating sights and memorable moments. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #warrenton #vaalriver

S1 – Ep 344 – Kimberley – The Impressive Sentimental Journey which Surprised us!

Our visit to Kimberley began with a late arrival, but we wasted no time and dropped off our bags before heading out for dinner. The Mohawk Spur provided a delightful dining experience with delicious food. We knew that Kimberley had so much to offer, so we carefully selected a few places to explore the following morning. We marveled at the Cecil John Rhodes statue, paid our respects at the war memorials, and were left in awe by the breathtaking Anglican Cathedral, its size truly mind-blowing. A sentimental journey took us to St Patrick's CBC, where my father and uncle had attended school years ago. The impressive institution surprised us with its greatness. Of course, our visit wouldn't have been complete without a trip to the iconic Big Hole, a colossal highlight that left us amazed. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kimberley

S1 – Ep 263 – Douglas – A Town at the Confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers!

It was once again one of those days where we only arrived at our overnight accommodation in Douglas late that evening because we got caught up at all our other stops throughout the day. The next morning we got an early start so we could see as much of Douglas as we could. It was raining on-and-off all morning, but that didn't slow us down one bit! We were very impressed with this town and found it very neat and organised. The highlight was our visit to the confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers. What a spectacle! This was amazing to see and a must-visit if you have not been there before. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #douglas #hopetown

S1 – Ep 274 – Upington – On the Banks of the Mighty Orange River!

When we arrived in Upington we had to cross the mighty Orange River once again on this trip. We headed to the Kalahari Mall to get pasta for dinner and we went directly to our accommodation where we spent the evening. This place was like paradise with beautiful gardens and water features. The next morning we went straight to the Police Station where we wanted to see the camel statue with the policeman on its back. There is a great story behind this which we explain in the video. Then we spent some time at Sakkie se Arkie campsite which is on the banks of the river. It was then time to go to the museum and the donkey sculpture which was another fascinating visit. We will definitely have to come and see Upington again. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #upington #orangeriver

S1 – Ep 270 – Prieska – A Beautiful Town on the Southern Bank of the Orange River!

As has been happening more frequently nowadays, we ended up travelling into the night again on our way to Prieska. but to be honest we enjoyed the beautiful sunset and the landscape which has amazing light at that time of the day. Crossing over the Orange River as the sun had set was absolutely awe-inspiring! It was good to see the workers cleaning the streets at night as we drove through this town on the southern bank of the Orange River. It really is a very clean town. We arrived at the farm where we were spending the evening but were so tired after the long day that we had supper and hit the sack immediately. The next morning we were up early and started exploring Prieska. What a gorgeous town, there was so much to see and enjoy. The old locomotive at the station, the fort on the hill, the view of the Orange River and the golf course and so much more. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #prieska

S1 – Ep 350 – Hartswater – A Touching Monument Honouring Women!

Our trip to Hartswater was truly memorable and welcoming. The Poplar trees lining the road, a unique sight found and the longest of its kind in the world, created a picturesque drive. The small, adorable church at the town's entrance was a touching monument honouring women who played a significant role during the depression and when the Vaalharts Water Scheme began. As we explored further, the bustling activity in the town was heartening to witness, and we were pleasantly surprised to stumble upon a lively golf tournament at the town's Golf Course. The schools and sports facilities were in excellent condition, a testament to the town's dedication to maintaining their community. Even in the church they were sanding down the pews for varnishing before the next service. Hartswater left a lasting impression of a functional agricultural town filled with hardworking and caring individuals, making our visit truly special. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #hartswater

S1 – Ep 406 – Oudtshoorn – Sandstone Buildings Lined the Streets!

We had quite an adventurous trip to Oudtshoorn, enduring misty conditions on our drive through Robinson Pass, which obscured the scenic vistas, but we pressed on. Our stay at The Old Mill Lodge, just outside Oudtshoorn, left us thoroughly impressed, with the soothing sound of the river and the stunning natural beauty around us. The next morning, brimming with energy, we ventured into Oudtshoorn and were, despite the persistent rain, immediately captivated and enthused by the charming old sandstone buildings that lined the streets. S1 – Ep 351 – Christiana – We Crossed the Wide Vaal River Again!

On our way to Christiana, we were captivated by the impressive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, witnessing vast canals supplying water to the area, a sight that pleasantly surprised us. The journey through town led us over a remarkable, long single-lane steel-girded bridge which crossed the wide Vaal River. On the other side we attempted to find the nearby rock engravings. We couldn't locate them, but on the bright side, we had to cross the bridge for a second time! Our curiosity also led us to the Christiana on the Vaal Resort, which was closed because of the recent floods. Driving through the town we were amazed by an early twentieth-century church building which was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Town Hall from a distance and we were saddened by it being burnt down due to unrest. On a more positive note, we had the opportunity to visit the well-organised school, the Christiana School for the Blind. However, on our way out of town we passed the hospital and saw that it had burnt down due to human error while renovations were being done. Despite the mixed emotions, the visit was a unique and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northwestprovince #christiana

S1 – Ep 401 – Saldanha – Harbours, Trains and Fish-and-Chips!

Our visit to Saldanha was a short, yet fantastic journey. The drive from Vredenburg was quick, and our fascination with harbours was well rewarded. The sight of the bustling dry dock and the enormity of the Sea Harvest processing facility left us in awe. Lunch at Charlie's Fish and Chip shop was a delight, savouring delicious fish-and-chips and fish cakes. Our next stop, the Ore Terminal, was off-limits, but witnessing the trains transporting the ore from Sishen to the harbour was an amazing experience, despite the red dust that covered the entire area. Our visit to this interesting coastal town was truly captivating and memorable. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #saldanha #saldanhabay #vredenburg

Putsonderwater, a disappearing ghost town (It leaves you with a sad feeling about days gone by)

The first settlers at #Putsonderwater were the Connans, Scottish immigrants. The railway line built during WW2 provided #Putsonderwater with a lifeline. During the 60’s a proper train station was built, which once upon a time was awarded ‘most attractive station.’

At one point over 100 people bought “on the book” (on credit) from the local store. Even the Boswell Wilkie Circus paid a visit to the town once a year.

How ironic that the very institution that gave life to the town was also its demise. With the collapse of the SA rail freight, the little village became a ghost town.

Sadly today all that remains are abandoned buildings and outhouses. What a tale they could tell.

Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery

Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery located in St. Louis, Missouri.

“ CIVIL WAR JEFFERSON BARRACKS

Jefferson Barracks, established by the U.S. Army in 1826, was in continuous use until 1946. Early in the Civil War, both pro-Union and pro-Confederate militia occupied St. Louis. Union militia drilled at Jefferson Barracks. In May 1861 pro-Confederate forces were expelled from the city.

Throughout the war Jefferson Barracks served as a hospital. The army converted existing buildings and erected new ones to serve as medical facilities. By the end of 1862, more than 5,000 sick and wounded had been treated at Jefferson Barracks General Hospital. In excess of 18,000 Union soldiers passed through it by the time the war ended in 1865.

NATIONAL CEMETERY

With the hospital came the need for a cemetery. The Jefferson Barracks post burial grounds had been in use since August 1827. By the time of the Civil War, more than 600 soldiers and civilians had been buried there. The national cemetery, established in 1866, was expanded beyond the post cemetery. By 1869, it contained more than 10,000 graves, the majority known. Among those interred were 1,106 Confederate prisoners of war.

Two Civil War Medal of Honor recipients are buried here. Pvt. Martin Schubert, 26th New York Infantry, picked up the colors and carried them until he was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862.

Corp. Lorenzo D. Immell, 2nd U.S. Artillery, gathered abandoned cannon and continued to fire on Confederates at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, Missouri, August 10, 1861.
