History of Wanaque Part 1, Midvale and the Erie-Lackawanna Railway. Drone Video & Historical Photos

Check out the related blog post for more photos and updates on this story:

Welcome to what was once the Midvale Train station. Completed in 1872, Midvale Station is our first stop along the Montclair branch of the Greenwood Lake Railway.

Fun fact: it is assumed Midvale was the name given because of its geographic position in the middle of a valley between the Windbeam Mountains... and the Westbrook Mountains to the north-west (diamond jubilee-p10)

The Greenwood Lake Railroad was responsible for bringing many new settlers to the area. The railroad was used to transport vacationers to Greenwood Lake and the newly constructed Ringwood lakes. The railroad also served the many residents that were employed by the Wanaque River Paper Mill and the DuPont Plant.

Some of the structures around the Midvale Station still stand, check out some of these old photos we found from the Midvale Train Stop area.

As we continue along the rail line, our second stop is where Haskell Station once stood, near Doty Road.

Fun fact: Haskell is named after a Colonel that headed the Latin Rand Company. There were also two Haskell brothers, probably related to Colonel Haskell, who managed the DuPont Plant on the west side of the Wanaque River. When the railroad engineers would ask as to which DuPont Plant to drop the cargo, a popular response for the west side was to drop it on Haskell side This area of Pompton Township, below Railroad Avenue had been referred to as Wynockie prior to this time(diamond jubilee -p13)

WANAQUE was known as a company town because the DuPont Factory employed upwards of 5000 people, along with a Paper mill that existed for a long time. But around the turn of WW1, the DuPont factory closed, and the Paper Mill was demolished to make room for the reservoir; the residents were hit hard because they lost their livelihoods. According to research, it felt as though that event marked the beginning of the end of this rail line.

Around World War ll, the community started to slowly recover due to tourism. Tourists began flocking towards neighboring Ringwood with its brand new 3 lake communities in addition to Greenwood Lake.

Wanaque recovered.

The population grew again from 3,100 in the 1940s to 4,200 in the 1950s and again to 7,100 in the 1960s. (Wikipedia)

Then, at 7:55pm on Friday, September 30th 1966, locomotive 1421 departed the Wanaque-Midvale station for the last time. Closing a chapter in Wanaque's history.

Both of the train stations in our area now long gone. Midvale station burned down, the tracks have been hauled off, and the land has become a path for power lines until it was recently reopened as a walking trail. As for the Haskell station, nothing is left of the railroad station; just what's written and memories.

Tour of HASKELL FREE LIBRARY in Canada and U.S. - WildTravelsTV.com

Vermont's Haskell Free Library and Opera House is located right on the border between Canada and the U.S. - Quebec and Vermont.
It's the only public building that straddles the U.S. - Canadian line. which makes it the only place you can check out a book, catch a show, and defect to a foreign country without ever leaving the building. The locals seem to peacefully coexist, as WILD TRAVELS host Will Clinger found out on a 2016 visit for the second season of the show. Poverty in Arkansas.

10 Arkansas small towns with the worst poverty.
10 Poorest towns in Arkansas.

Today we are going to take a look at Arkansas and the mess that it is.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the national poverty rate was 11.8% percent or 38.1 million Americans in 2018. These states have the highest percentages of poverty in the country: Mississippi, New Mexico, Louisiana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, District of Colombia, Oklahoma, South Carolina and the territory of Puerto Rico.

So why are we starting with Arkansas? Last month I got an email from a guy named Glen in Little Rock who said
I best not put Arkansas in my mouth again. He said he’d find me and pull me out of my electric car and crush my head.
I replied: Dude how did you watch my video, you are using AOL dial-up service.
He replied. What’s wrong with that.
I replied “Nothing if it were 1997.
He never replied again. So, in Glen's honor, I am putting Arkansas back in my mouth and we are going to look at the poorest towns in Arkansas.
Thanks for checking out the channel. I hope you enjoyed today's video. If there is a state, city or town you'd like us to do a video about let us know in the comment section.

The History of Wanaque part 2: The Wanaque Reservoir, Aerials and Quick Facts in 4k UHD

Monks Cemetery:

Earlier this year we visited Wanaque to tell the tale of Midvale and the Train Station. This time we fill in some gaps and take you back in time to the formation of the Wanaque Reservoir.

Enter the 1900's a time where Blacksmiths, Tannerys, and Mills stood throughout Ringwood Avenue. Ringwood's lakes were just Tices Pond and Wanaque Reservoir was the Wanaque River. Deep under the waters of the reservoir, the true history of Wanaque awaits.

The construction of the reservoir started in the 1920s and took about 10 years to complete.

Furnace Street in Wanaque ends in a dam on one end but did you know that Furnace street went further!? Yup! Furnace Street leads right to the Ryerson Freedom furnace, which is now underwater. This furnace was used in the early iron production from the nearby mines.

The Wanaque Paper Mill, remnants of the ancient Iron Furnaces, cemeteries, homesteads, and railroads, were all either destroyed or submerged in the forming of the Reservoir. That's right, many of the oldest graves found around town were moved from their original resting ground, which is now deep underwater.

Fun fact: One cemetery still remains on the inaccessible Wanaque Reservoir lands. You can find the location on Google maps.
If you're interested in discovering more about the Monks Cemetary check the link in the description below.

Here is an old map showing the changes that took place once the Wanaque river was dammed to form the reservoir. Notice the original location of these 4 family cemeteries: Board's, Browns, Erskine, and Ryerson.

Forming the Reservoir took a toll, displacing 70 homes, two major employers, the DuPont factory, The Paper Mill, 4 cemeteries, and 256 bodies were moved to create it!

Speaking of moving bodies, Did you know that the earliest settlers in the area were the Lenni Lenape Native American tribe and there are historical mentions of early white settlers unknowingly moving Indian headstones from Indian burial ground on the Meadowbrook Estates on Conklintown road!

Some of the earliest names of 'Dutch' settlers were: the Beams, Sloats, Van Dines, Vreelands, and Lines. The Beams can be dated back somewhere in the early 1700s and, lived around Chestnut Street! In fact, the Beam family grave markers still stand at the Midvale Cemetery.

Wanaque NJ Fall Foliage check out our UAP over New Jersey

Did you know that During the great depression thousands of writers were hired by the Works Project Administration to create guidebooks on all 50 states? In the one about this area specifically, the author wrote that every person he met in town had a different idea of where Haskell ended and Wanaque began. I'll let you decide that one.
