A place of rare beauty and windswept dunes, stark landscapes and jagged coastlines - a world of untamed natural beauty - this is Walvis Bay, the main harbour of Namibia.
Walvis Bay is situated on the south west coast of Africa at the edge of the Namib desert and is Namibia's principal port and growth centre.
Walvis Bay's rich natural resources and strategic location provide the basis for tourism and industrial development. The existing environment of growth and prosperity has already contributed to unprecedented interest both nationally and internationally. Seen as the gateway to central and southern Africa, Walvis Bay is in the threshold of a prosperous and dynamic future.

The municipal area covers 1124 km square and boasts 60 km of Atlantic coastline. On the landward side, Walvis Bay is enclosed by 23 000 square km of conservation area that includes high dunes, wetlands and Kuiseb River delta.
Walvis Bay's population of 55 000 people composed of a variety of ethnic groups of different religious and cultural backgrounds.

Walvis Bay, meaning Whale Bay in Afrikaans, has had a chequered history. The bay has been a haven for sea vessels because of its natural deep water harbour. This explains the complicated political status of Walvis Bay down the years:
1487: The first European, the renowned Portuguese navigator Bartholomew Diaz anchored his flagship Sao Cristovao in Walvis Bay on the 8th of December 1487, on his expedition to find a sea route to East via the Cape of Good Hope. He named the bay Golfo de Sanata Maria da Conceicao.
1840: In the scramble for Africa, Great Britain, a premier sea faring nation at the time, annexed Walvis Bay and a small area of the surrounding territory to forestall German ambitions in the region and to ensure safe passage of British ships around the Cape.
1910: Walvis Bay, as well as the Cape Colony, became part of the newly formed Union of South Africa. However, a dispute arose with Germany over the enclave's boundaries. This was eventually settled in 1911 and Walvis Bay was allocated an area of 1124 square km.
1915: South African forces ousted the Germans and Walvis Bay was quickly integrated into the new martial law regime established in
South West Africa. South Africa was later awarded control over South West Africa by the league of Nations.
1921: Civilian rule was restored in South West Africa and Walvis Bay became an integral part of South West Africa.
1971: With independence for South West Africa imminent, South Africa transferred power over Walvis Bay back to its Cape Province.
1977: In its attempt to avoid losing control of Walvis Bay to a possibly hostile SWAPO-led government, the then South African Government reimposed direct rule and reasserted its claim to sovereignty based on the original annexation.
1978: The United Nations Security Council provided for bilateral negotiations between South Africa and a future Namibia to resolve the political status of Walvis Bay.
1990: South West Africa gained Independence. A new nation, Namibia, was born but Walvis Bay remained under South African control.
1994: Walvis Bay was formally returned to Namibia after the local business community and investors in Walvis Bay applied pressure on the South African authorities to resolve the political status of Walvis Bay.

Swakopmund, Namibia, was founded two years later than Windhoek, in 1892, by Captain Curt von Francois as the main harbour of German South West Africa. Increased traffic between Germany and its colony necessitated establishing of own port as Walvis Bay, located 33 kilometres south, was already in British possession. The choice fell on Swakopmund where water could be found and because other sites checked (including Cape Cross) were unsuitable.

Name. The majority of towns and villages in Namibia have grown out of indigenous settlements and very often were located close to sources of water. Names of places given by original inhabitants were very descriptive and in many cases those names were retained by European settles who sometimes simplified pronunciations of the names.

Nama word ''Tsoakhaub'' can be translated as ''excrement opening'' which was offensive but accurate description of the waters of Swakop River at the time of coming down in floods carrying masses of mud, sand, pieces of vegetation and animal corpses. The masses of dirty and muddy water were emptied into the ocean and the indigenous name described it very well.

The Nama name was changed to ''Swachaub'' and with proclamation of Swakopmund as independent district in 1896 the present way of writing came into use.

SWAKOPMUND, NAMIBIA: Africa's MOST BEAUTIFUL Town? Travel Guide to ALL SIGHTS

Welcome to Namibia! And welcome to part 3 of an incredible road trip through one of the least populated countries in the world. This country about 1,5 time the size of France mainly consists of desert landscape. In the previous two episodes we traveled along the coast of South Africa from Cape Town, to visit the first highlight of the country and the absolute number one sight: the Sossusvlei. After that we drove through no man's land to the industrial port city of Walvis Bay. We spotted flamingoes crossing the dunes in the endless desert and visited pink salt lakes.

In this episode we continue the drive along the coast to another tourist hot spot on the ocean shore. The town of Swakopmund is the most beautiful preserved colonial town, with a lot of German influences. The architecture is outstanding, but Swakopmund has more to offer. It's the beating heart of Namibian culture. We also visit the National Marine Aquarium, some shipwrecks on the so called Skeleton Coast and thousands of seals at Cape Cross. Up next will be Etosha National Park for some safari drives.

Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia and the Philippines. Zanzibar and Tanzania are already destination number 21 on the big trip. We have also been away from home for a year. Follow us on this world tour, first in Tanzania, from Zanzibar to the safari parks on the mainland and then to many more beautiful destinations in Africa! We still travel non-stop all year and film everything, with a new episode every week. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or

ROAD TRIP NAMIBIA - Pink Lakes, Deserts and FLAMINGOES in Walvis Bay

Welcome to Namibia! And welcome to part 2 of an incredible road trip through one of the least populated countries in the world. This country about 1,5 time the size of France mainly consists of desert landscape. In the previous episode we traveled along the coast of South Africa from Cape Town, to visit the first highlight of the country and the absolute number one sight: the Sossusvlei.

In this episode we continue the drive through an otherworldly no man's land. Situated on the coast, just outside the extensive Namibia desert and surrounded by salt flats, is an industrial town called Walvis Bay. It's actually an African name, originally Dutch, named after the 'walvis', which means whale. We find out typical things about Namibia, head into nature, see pink lakes, salt flats and thousands of flamingoes. Up next will be Swakopmund, Cape Cross and Etosha National Park for safari.

Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Namibia (part10) Walvis Bay Swakopmund to Walvis Bay, Large Port City, Harbour, Lagoon of Flamingos

Walvis Bay, Afrikaans Walvisbaai, town and anchorage in west-central Namibia, lying along the Atlantic Ocean. It constituted an exclave of South Africa until 1992.

A mid-19th-century rush for guano deposits on a number of adjacent islands was followed by British annexation of the bay and the adjacent hinterland in 1878. It was incorporated into Britain’s Cape Colony (now part of South Africa) in 1884, the same year in which Germany established the colony of South West Africa. By the Act of Union (1910) Walvis Bay was included in the newly united South Africa. For reasons of convenience, it was administered as part of South West Africa from 1922 until 1977. From 1978 it was governed directly by South Africa, which retained the exclave after Namibia reached independence in 1990. The latter disputed South Africa’s possession of Walvis Bay, claiming the exclave was Namibian territory. In 1992 the two countries agreed to administer the exclave jointly, and in 1994 South Africa transferred sovereignty over Walvis Bay to Namibia.

The town of Walvis Bay lies on the edge of the Namib Desert at the mouth of the intermittently flowing Kuiseb River. A portion of the town lies below sea level (4 feet [1.2 metres]) and is protected by a dike against flooding. Walvis Bay Harbour serves as Namibia’s chief port. It is sheltered by Pelican Point Peninsula on the northwest and is connected to the interior by road, rail, and air. The harbour was formerly a deepwater anchorage for the South African navy, and since the late 1970s the port has exported uranium from one of the world’s most importantwa deposits, at Rössing, 50 miles (80 km) northeast. Severe coastal overfishing from the mid-1970s caused a decline in importance of the town’s former economic mainstay.

Namibia, a land of mesmerizing landscapes and abundant wildlife, is a country that beckons explorers and nature enthusiasts from around the world. Nestled along the Atlantic Ocean coastline, the region around Walvis Bay and Dorob National Park offers a unique blend of marine wonders, expansive deserts, and diverse wildlife.

Walvis Bay, a natural harbor and Namibia's only deep-sea port, serves as the gateway to this extraordinary region. Its name, meaning Whale Bay in Afrikaans, hints at the marine marvels that await. The bay's calm waters are a haven for marine life, and it's not uncommon to spot seals, dolphins, and even the majestic humpback whales. Birdwatchers also flock to the area to witness the migratory spectacle of thousands of flamingos turning the bay's shallow lagoon into a sea of pink. This unique interplay of marine and avian life makes Walvis Bay a vital stop for both local and migratory species.

Dorob National Park, situated adjacent to Walvis Bay, extends the enchantment of this coastal region into the heart of the Namib Desert. Covering over 1,545 square miles, this national park is a haven for desert enthusiasts and conservationists. The park's striking dunes, some reaching heights of over 1,000 feet, are captivating natural sculptures shaped by the relentless wind and time. Adventurous souls can explore the otherworldly landscapes by 4x4, hike through the dunes, or embark on guided excursions.

The desert within Dorob National Park isn't the barren wasteland one might imagine. It's home to a wide array of wildlife. The Namib Desert beetle, has inbuilt ingenious mechanisms to extract water from the morning fog, surviving in one of the driest places on Earth. In the rocky outcrops and canyons, you'll find desert-adapted mammals like oryx, springbok, and desert foxes. These creatures have been created with sustenance to withstand the extreme temperatures and limited resources of the desert.

The crown jewel of the desert, however, is the iconic Namib Desert, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches for over 1,200 miles. Its breathtaking vistas include the renowned Sossusvlei, where rust-red dunes rise dramatically against the deep blue sky. The stark beauty of this desert landscape draws photographers and adventure seekers alike.

In this arid wilderness, the wildlife has the ability to survive the harshest of conditions. The elusive desert elephants and black rhinos roam the rocky terrain, while the skies are patrolled by the magnificent martial eagle. Nightfall in the Namib unveils a celestial spectacle, making it a prime location for stargazing.

The region encompassing Walvis Bay, Dorob National Park, and the surrounding desert epitomizes the raw and captivating beauty of Namibia. It showcases the harmonious coexistence of marine life, desert landscapes, and resilient wildlife. This area is a testament to the wonders of our natural world and serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation in preserving these ecosystems for generations to come. Whether you're an intrepid explorer or simply a lover of nature's wonders, this corner of Namibia is an invitation to immerse yourself in the enigmatic beauty of the desert and its remarkable wildlife.

What Walvis Bay looks like, and surroundings

You will find Walvis Bay on every world map, not because it's massive, but because it is special. As the last annex of the British empire, it's history is interesting.

Wedged in between the Ocean and Sandy Desert of the Namib, this is one beautiful town, with loads to do and see for visitors and locals alike.

The lagoon is a nature preserve site, and all the wealthiest people in Walvis Bay live on prime propery next to the Lagoon. To the South of Walvis Bay is the Salt Processing works, where salt is extracted from sea water.

The town itself is protected from the encroaching desert by multiple layers of fencing. To the East of Walvis Bay there is the Bird paradise, and further out is Dune 7.

The poorer neighborhoods also feature a little in this video, and you can see the contrast in living standards between the richest and poorest inhabitants of this harbor town.

The goods that are shipped through the port is further transported to Southern Africa by road and rail.
