Whirlwind of Roadtrips… where we explore backroads and out of the way roadways and small towns for interesting attractions, oddities and places with unique stories, you know, roadside attractions in America. In episode eight, we are in Walterboro, South Carolina. We are in route to Edisto Beach and have never been in Walterboro. We come across many places with some interesting history, including one of only three standpipe water towers in South Carolina. This one use to be a jail! And there are so many wonderful small churches in this town and we ring a church bell from the 1800's!

Visit Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary in Walterboro, South Carolina! (Shot in 4K)
Walterboro's nature-based attraction, the Wildlife Sanctuary, offers visitors the ultimate Lowcountry experience, combining history, culture, recreation and education in a singularly southern lowlands setting.
Just three minutes from I-95, the environmental jewel is ideally positioned to serve as the gateway to other nature-based centers in the state and as a catalyst for the greatly expanding ecotourism market. Located within the ACE Basin, the East Coast's largest estuarine preserve, the 600 plus acre Sanctuary features what may be the only braided creek swamp accessible to the public.
A completed network of boardwalks, hiking, biking and canoe trails provide a perfect vantage point to observe the diversity of wildlife inhabiting the black water bottomland. The most historically significant of these paths follows the Colonial-era Charleston-to-Savannah Stagecoach Road still bearing the cypress remnants of long-fallen bridges.
The final phase of the project— Wildlife Center—will include a multi-purpose classroom and cutting-edge exhibition area and ampitheatre.

We discover the true Southern Charm City: Charleston, South Carolina!! After spending the morning walking the magically adorable streets and taking in the architecture, we take a ferry over to the Fort Sumter National Monument 30-minutes out into the harbor. This was such a cute and fun day in a place we never thought we would visit, it surprised us how adorable Charleston really is!

Colleton State Park is a 35-acre (0.14 km2) state park located along U.S. Highway 15 between St. George and Walterboro, South Carolina, United States. The smallest state park in the state of South Carolina, Colleton's main attraction is recreational access to the Edisto River in the form of paddling or fishing. Several campsites for RVs and tents as well as some team-sport recreation facilities are also located in the site. For many years, the park was underutilized due in part to an adjacent SCE&G coal-fire power plant, which discouraged many potential visitors from the park. The power plant was closed by SCE&G at the end of 2012.[2] Local officials hope to potentially acquire the site and expand the park.

A visit to the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial in Walterboro, South Carolina.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American pilots that fought during World War II. They stayed at the Walterboro Army Airfield and used it as a training ground back in the 1940’s. There is a monument in place that honors this group of brave men. There is also one that is currently being built in Sumter, SC but it is not completely finished yet.

hello, my friends. this is a map of beautiful south carolina. The state can be divided into three natural geographic areas which then can be subdivided into five distinct cultural regions. The natural environment is divided from east to west by the Atlantic coastal plain, the Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Culturally, the coastal plain is split into the Lowcountry and the Pee Dee region. While, the upper Piedmont region is referred to as the Piedmont and the lower Piedmont region is referred to as the Midlands. The area surrounding the Blue Ridge Mountains is known as the Upstate. The Atlantic Coastal Plain makes up two-thirds of the state. Its eastern border is the Sea Islands, a chain of tidal and barrier islands. The border between the lowcountry and the upcountry is defined by the Atlantic Seaboard fall line, which marks the limit of navigable rivers.

The Atlantic Coastal plain consists of sediments and sedimentary rocks that range in age from Cretaceous to Present. The terrain is relatively flat and the soil is composed predominantly of sand, silt, and clay. Areas with better drainage make excellent farmland, though some land is swampy. An unusual feature of the coastal plain is a large number of low-relief topographic depressions named Carolina bays. The bays tend to be oval, lining up in a northwest to southeast orientation. The eastern portion of the coastal plain contains many salt marshes and estuaries, as well as natural ports such as Georgetown and Charleston. The natural areas of the coastal plain are part of the Middle Atlantic coastal forests ecoregion.
The Sandhills or Carolina Sandhills is a 10–35 mi wide region within the Atlantic Coastal Plain province, along the inland margin of this province. The Carolina Sandhills are interpreted as eolian (wind-blown) sand sheets and dunes that were mobilized episodically. Most of the published luminescence ages from the sand are coincident with the last glaciation, a time when the southeastern United States was characterized by colder air temperatures and stronger winds.
Much of Piedmont consists of Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks, and the landscape has relatively low relief. Due to the changing economics of farming, much of the land is now reforested in loblolly pine for the lumber industry. These forests are part of the Southeastern mixed forests ecoregion. At the southeastern edge of Piedmont is the fall line, where rivers drop to the coastal plain. The fall line was an important early source of water power. Mills built to this resource encouraged the growth of several cities, including the capital, Columbia. The larger rivers are navigable up to the fall line, providing a trade route for mill towns.
The northwestern part of Piedmont is also known as the Foothills. The Cherokee Parkway is a scenic driving route through this area. This is where Table Rock State Park is located.
Pinnacle Mountain can be viewed from Caesars Head.
The Blue Ridge consists primarily of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, and the landscape has relatively high relief. The Blue Ridge Region contains an escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains that continues into North Carolina and Georgia as part of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Sassafras Mountain, South Carolina's highest point at 3,560 feet, is in this area. Also in this area is Caesars Head State Park. The environment here is that of the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests ecoregion.
