Exploring Vorkuta - Russian Ghost Town in Arctic | The Most Depressing Town in Russia

Despite the richest coal deposits that gave boost to the development of the city, Vorkuta and the adjacent settlements are rapidly emptying today. The mega project of the Soviet machine was not in demand among the heirs of the empire. Today, some districts of Vorkuta and surrounding villages are abandoned or are about to be completely deserted. How is Vorkuta living today? What's going on around her? What are the prospects for the main coal mining region in the north of Russia? I personally went to the Arctic to answer these questions.

Vorkuta: Fastest Dying City in Russia. From Coal Mine to Ghost Town | Built by Stalin’s Gulag

Vorkuta was once a real “place of power”: a thriving coal mining centre with good infrastructure and high salaries. Today, though, it is almost completely abandoned, with ruined houses and free real estate. The Soviet Union basically built the city that was doomed to collapse. How did it happen? What was the role of Stalin and his Gulag system in the history of Vorkuta? And what can be done now to save the city from extinction?

The long dark in Vorkuta. Part 1.

You may sponsor the creation of new videos via: ,

Vorkuta is a coal-mining town, situated in the northeast of European Russia, just north of the Arctic Circle. With it's satellite towns, Vorkuta forms the so-called Vorkuta Ring or Vorkuta Circle, which included such towns as Severny, Tsementnozavodsky, Yur-Shor, Promyshlenny, Vorgashor, Komsomolsky, Mulda, Zapolyarny, Oktyabrsky, Sovetsky and others. Their population was employed in coal mines and other industrial and military facilities. After collapse of the Soviet Union, many mines were closed due to accidents and high operating costs and people began to move to other regions. The towns of Vorkuta Ring became partially or completely abandoned, some were demolished.

Vorkuta: najbrže umirući grad u Rusiji. Od rudnika ugljena do grada duhova. Izgradio Staljinov Gulag

The Reality of Life in Russia 2023 (bureaucratic nightmare)

This is our life in Russia in late 2022 / 2023. Traveling to Russia as a westerner has always been difficult, a bureaucratic nightmare, but this year is the first time Matt and I have really had any issues. We arrived in my hometown of Kemerovo, Siberia, after crossing in to Russia at Kaliningrad and flying to Novosibirsk. Once here and staying with my family, we went to register with the local authorities, but everything turned out to be a little complicated to say the least. This is a week in our lives here staying in Siberia as we hang out with my family and prepare for New years eve (the biggest celebration of the year in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and many other former Soviet countries). Welcome to a very cold, wintery Siberia.

Visiting a traditional Russian house (my aunties):

Abandoned Russia... What happened to Vorkuta city? #coldestcity #russianwinter #vorkuta

My expedition to the Far North of Russia continues in the suburbs of a ghost town Vorkuta.
Vorkuta (Воркута) is a coal-mining town in the Komi Republic, Russia, situated just north of the Arctic Circle in the Pechora coal basin at the river Vorkuta. In 2010 its population was 70,548, down from 84,917 in 2002.

Vorkuta is the fourth largest city north of the Arctic Circle and the easternmost town in Europe. It is also the coldest city in all of Europe, boasting a record cold temperature of −52 °C (−61 °F).

Vorkuta's population has dropped steadily since the fall of the Soviet Union, when mines were privatized and many people began moving farther south. Many of the mines have been abandoned and by September 2020, the city's estimated population was only about 50,000. A report in March 2021 described the villages in the area as ghost towns with many abandoned structures.

I expected to see completely abandoned towns, so imagine my surprise and shock when I saw that some people still live there...

Another day in the most depressed and coldest city in the world | Travel to Russia to Vorkuta

How did I get into Vorkuta? I went on a trip to the Russian north. There is a lot of gas and oil here. But people live in poverty. I don't understand why this is so ...
I was lucky enough to drive on the only completed section of the railway, passing through Salekhard and Igarka, between Vorkuta and Labytnangi.
People still live in this city and in these houses. A lot of gas and oil are sold in this country. But people live in such houses and earn $ 300-900 a month. Vorkuta most depressed town!

How do people live in Vorkuta, Russia? Dying city of Russia

Vorkuta resembles scenes from post-apocalyptic films or scenery for some kind of computer game.
Vorkuta is located 150 km north of the Arctic Circle on the 67th parallel, in the permafrost zone.
The construction of Vorkuta began in 1931. For the first 30 years, the city and coal mines were built exclusively by convicts.
From the late 1930s until the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953, Vorkutlag was located in Vorkuta - one of the largest Gulag camps. There are no exact data, but about 2 million people passed through the Vorkuta camps, about 200 thousand of them remained here lying in the ground. Vorkuta is a city built on bones.
In my video you will see how the inhabitants of the Russian city Vorkuta live.
