Discovering Decorah Iowa Part 1 (Dunning Spring, Ice Cave, and Toppling Goliath Brewery).
In this episode of Country Pilgrim, we take you to Decorah Iowa, and explore a 200-foot waterfall, ice cave and take a nice relaxing break at one of the top micro-breweries in the Mid-West - Toppling Goliath Brewery.

The River you aren’t supposed to fish | Fly Fishing out of a canoe?
Risk is just something we all have to deal with when it comes to exploring the unknown… Wide open water, beautiful overhanging bluffs, and the real potential for trophy trout is enough to get any angler interested in the idea.. But in order to fish one of the area's only true trout rivers, it took a lot of time and research.. And it almost never happened.. This is thirteen miles floating and fishing the Yellow River.

I have yet to see or find better trout fishing East of the Rocky Mountains. Southern Tailwaters, Great Lakes Tributaries, and even The Smoky Mountains all pale in comparison. In the United States, the Driftless Region is so far and above any other major trout fishing destination. This kind of day is quite common and gives you the opportunity of both quantity and quality. Endless dry fly rises at every bend and the chance for nymphing up monsters from the undercuts. Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota have untold numbers of streams JUST LIKE THIS ONE. Oh and did I mention? We were the ONLY anglers on the river. The Driftless is an absolute treat.

Salmon River NY Steelhead Fishing Jan 2023
An ice fishing trip that didn't work out, fell back on the steelhead. This has happened a time or 2 in the past when the ice fishing sucked and we fell back on the salmon river, the only difference is this time I actually caught a few fish. I was reminded, however, that I dont know jack, when a local legend showed up and took us to school.

Pretty park near Fayette in NE Iowa. There isn't a beach and the campground lacks abundant shade but other than that this checks a lot of boxes. Numerous trails traverse the park and it looks like a popular spot for equestrian use (there's a separate equestrian campground that was getting use). The lake has ADA accessible jetties and fishing pier and we saw several people fishing from them while we visited, as well as boaters and kayakers using the lake.

In June of 2021, Kay got the opportunity to explore outdoor activities in and near Fort Dodge, Iowa. One of the activities Kay got to do is kayaking on the Des Moines River Water Trail from Dolliver State Park to the town of Lehigh. Dolliver Memorial State Park in northwest Iowa is unique for its natural bluffs and geological formations. Dolliver overlooks the Des Moines River Valley and spreads across 594 acres of flatlands and rugged trails. It is a beautiful state park with lots of history.
The Des Moines River Water Trail is known as a meandered river. That means that the the river and its banks (up to the high water line). It is always good to looks for wildlife while you paddle. There is always a chance to see otters, turtles, eagles, turkey vultures, and song birds.

Great Bear Springs Recreation Area - Fall Leaf Hike - Fulton, New York
The area known as Great Bear Springs is comprised of 236 acres owned by the City of Fulton, the 110 acre Town of Volney Park and 130 acres of CNY Landtrust land. Great Bear Springs has been a source of spring water for over 200 years and became the primary source of water for the City of Fulton in 1970.
This is an area I really love to go hiking in with many trail options ranging from short mile long hikes to full 10k trails created for an Eagle Scout project.

Mill Creek Suspension Bridge Youngstown Ohio
The 1895 bridge carries Valley Drive across Mill Creek to connect the east and west sides of Mill Creek Park. Following the wishes of Volney Rogers to create fanciful park entrances, Charles Fowler of the Youngstown Bridge Co. designed the structure. The Suspension Bridge is the oldest of six bridges in Mill Creek Park.[2] It measures 86 feet long and 32 feet wide and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It has been called the Silver Bridge, the Cinderella Bridge, the Castle Bridge, and the Walt Disney Bridge. By whatever name it is known, the Suspension Bridge with its lacy arches and soaring spires has provided romantic imagery for countless artists and photographers over the years.

Backbone State Park ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? - AMAZING!
Dedicated in 1920, this beautiful state park was Iowa's first. Here you can find the highest point in NE Iowa - a narrow ridge of bedrock known as The Devil's Backbone. We hiked the rocky trail that runs along it. In addition to 20+ miles of trails, the park boasts some of Iowa's best trout streams. Or just spend a lazy afternoon boating or kayaking on the lake. Those more adventurous than we are can also rock climb the dolomite limestone cliffs (register at the park office first). The campground is shaded and pretty. There are a number of modern cabins for rent as well, though it appears they do book out several months in advance online. Mrs. Meandering would LOVE to rent one in October when the leaves turn!
