Grenoble (/ɡrəˈnoʊbəl/ grə-NOH-bəl,[3] French: [ɡʁənɔbl] (About this soundlisten); Arpitan: Grenoblo, Grainóvol, Occitan: Graçanòbol, Grasanòbol) is the prefecture and largest city of the Isère department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. It is located within the Dauphiné historical province and lies where the river Drac joins the Isère at the foot of the French Alps.

The population of the commune of Grenoble was 158,180 at the 2016 census, while the population of the Grenoble metropolitan area (French: aire urbaine de Grenoble or agglomération grenobloise) was 687,985 which makes it the largest metropolis in the Alps, ahead of Innsbruck and Bolzano. A significant European scientific centre, the city advertises itself as the Capital of the Alps, due to its size and its proximity to the mountains. The many suburb communes that make up the rest of the metropolitan area include four with populations exceeding 20,000: Saint-Martin-d'Hères, Échirolles, Fontaine and Voiron.

Grenoble's history goes back over 2,000 years, to a time when it was a village of the Allobroges Gallic tribe. It became the capital of the Dauphiné in the 11th century. This status, consolidated by the annexation to France, allowed it to develop its economy. Grenoble then became a parliamentary and military city, close to the border with Savoy. Industrial development increased the prominence of Grenoble through several periods of economic expansion over the last three centuries. This started with a booming glove industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, continued with the development of a strong hydropower industry in the late 19th to early 20th centuries and ended with a post-World War II economic boom symbolized by the holding of the X Olympic Winter Games in 1968.

The city has grown to be one of Europe's most important research, technology and innovation centres, with one in five inhabitants working directly in these fields. Grenoble is classified as a global city with the ranking of sufficiency by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. The city will hold the title of European Green Capital in 2022.

The Bastille is the name of a fortress culminating at 476 m above sea level, located at the south end of the Chartreuse mountain range and overlooking the city of Grenoble, France.
The Bastille, which also gives its name to the hill, is the main tourist site of the Grenoble area with 600 000 visitors per year.
The fortress lies on the final promontory of Mount Rachais, a narrow mountain that is the most southerly of the Chartreuse range.
The plateau of the fortress' main fortifications is situated 264 metres above a singularly flat valley floor which is glacial in origin.
The melting of the Isère glacier approximately 25,000 years ago led to the formation of a vast lake stretching from Voiron to Albertville and which remained for approximately 10,000 years.
The filling-in of this lake by alluvial deposits created the perfectly flat valley floors that are in evidence today.
The location of the fort was chosen because it facilitated the surveillance and control of the city of Grenoble, from the 19th century onward,
as well as the valleys of the Isère and the Drac, all the while being difficult to attack and overthrow because of the cliffs and steep ground by which it is surrounded.
The Bastille is visited by some 600,000 people each year, approximately half of whom take the cable car from the city centre.
The rest of the visitors go by car up the steep and narrow road from La Tronche, or on foot by one of the numerous signposted paths to reach the Bastille.
In 2005 the Bastille underwent substantial works in order to make the entirety of the site accessible to persons of reduced mobility.
It is the setting for numerous exhibitions and social and cultural events, while also being the destination of an annual cycle race (La Prise De La Bastille) and a via ferrata (Les Prises De La Bastille).
There are reminders everywhere on the site of the protagonists of the fortifications of the hill.
The central square of the fort is called Place Tournadre, the square above between the restaurant and the fort is Place Haxo,
the terrace of the restaurant is the Belvédère Vauban (Vauban Viewpoint), and the large meeting and exhibition room of the fort is the Lesdiguières Room.

(EN) Grande Chartreuse is the head monastery of the Carthusian order. It is located in the Chartreuse Mountains, north of the city of Grenoble, in the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (Isère), France. Originally, the château belonged to the See of Grenoble. In 1084, Saint Hugh gave it to hermit Saint Bruno and his followers who founded the Carthusian Order.
Today, visitors are not permitted at Grand Chartreuse, and motor vehicles are prohibited on the surrounding roads. However, a museum of the Carthusian order and the lives of its monks and nuns stands about two kilometers away.
The order is supported by the sales of Chartreuse liqueur which has been popular in France and later around the world since the early 1700s.
English poet Matthew Arnold wrote one of his finest poems, Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse, while briefly staying at the monastery around 1850. The quiet, serenity, and monastic calm became, for him, the susurrations of a dying world which contrasted with what he saw as the violent emerging age of machinery. Grand Chartreuse was also described in the 1850 revision of William Wordsworth's The Prelude, Book VI, lines 416-88 (Wordsworth visited the monastery in 1790), and John Ruskin's Praeterita.
The monastery was closed in 1903 by the French state. The monks found refuge in Italy until 1929, but returned in 1940 when it was reopened.
A documentary film about the monastery entitled Into Great Silence, directed by Philip Gröning, received acclaim on the film festival circuit following its release in 2005.

How Chartreuse liqueur is made #alcohol

Did you know that to this day, that classic green Chartreuse liqueur involves monks, mountains, and 130 mystery ingredients?

I visited the famous Chartreuse cellars in Voiron, France and here’s some if the alcohol history:

???? To this day, only two people, both being monks, know the recipe. Even employees at the chartreuse distillery and other monks at the monastery don’t fully know.

????️ It’s made in the Chartreuse Mountains in France where the monastery sits about 25 km from where it’s distilled in the cellars. The monks visit the distillery every Monday to sample the liqueurs and check on their progress.

???? It derives from an elixir of ‘long life’. Its recipe was discovered over 400 years ago which eventually morphed into a new variation which is what we now know as Chartreuse. You can still buy the elixir today which we got to sample- and it’s 69%!

You can visit the????Chartreuse Distillery in Voiron, France.
