In Gotland, on the largest island in Sweden and the Baltic Sea, you will immediately be captivated by its unique character when you visit the city. The Hanseatic city of Visby is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia. It is one of the main reasons why this place is so popular with tourists. Among the most notable historical remains are the long town wall that encircles the town center. Built in two stages during the 13th and 14th centuries, approximately 3.44 km of its original 3.6 km still stands. Of the 29 large and 22 smaller towers, 27 large and nine small ones remain.
If you enjoy visiting sacral buildings on your travels, be sure not to miss a visit to 13th-century Visby Saint Mary's Cathedral, the only preserved medieval church in the city. There are four hundred graves under the church floor. The successive church changes throughout the centuries led to an irregular and variegated interior.
Close to the port is Almedalen, a well-known park in Sweden, as the leading site of the annual Almedalen Week. The event takes place in week 26 and is considered the most important forum in Swedish politics.
August sees the peak of the tourist season and the annual start of the fantastic Medieval Week. From Sunday to Sunday, the place is overcrowded by people dressed in characteristic Medieval costumes. This famous festival started in 1984 and comprises a variety of events: music, jesters, theatre, a medieval market, jousting tournaments, and much more.

Gotland is Sweden's largest island, being located about 90 km east of the Swedish mainland and about 130 km from the Baltic states, Latvia being the nearest. Visby is by far the most populated locality in Gotland. Gotland is one of Sweden's most noted tourist destinations. In this video I presented a short history of the island of Gotland, with a travel guide, including the natural landscape and the best places to visit.

There are also very bizzare natural formations across the island but more prominent in the northern part in the Fårö.

This is the last day of our Gotland tour. We checkout from Kneippbyn resort in the morning as we have ferry back to Stockholm at 17:00. We have rented car so we keep our luggage in car and will explore Old town of Visby.
Visby is the only medieval city in Scandinavia and such an amazing old town with so much history, from the old city walls and the incredible architecture to amazing restaurants and places.
In this vlog, we have walked around the old town of Visby. We have seen the old historical Visby Cathedral, Drotten Church & S:t Lawrence Church ruin.

Visby is a city of both roses and ruins and capital of the Baltic island of Gotland in south east Sweden. It is one of the most important Hanse towns with a well conserved mediaeval cityscape. Since 1270, and for a hundred and fifty years, construction of a long mediaeval wall, up to ten metres high, was undertaken around the historic city centre. However, the residents of the city did not want to protect themselves from enemies from abroad, but the attacks of farmers on the island, to whom access to the city was prohibited. The mainly German Hanse merchants were very wealthy and did not wish to share their good fortune with anyone else.Construction continued unabated and a modern city of the Middle Ages was created with more, and higher, stone buildings than anywhere else in Sweden. In the little square with its old town hall, decisions of the council were formerly proclaimed… and the building of Gamla Apoteket shines out in all of its mediaeval splendour. The prevailing townscape is due to a law of the nineteenth century: for the restoration and preservation of the mediaeval buildings, property owners were exempted from paying tax. Visby was designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 and is undoubtedly a priceless gem of the Middle Ages.
