Exploring Belgium: Villers Abbey
If you fancy visiting old buildings and cultural heritage, Villers Abbey in Belgium is your destination.
Located between Brussels and Charleroi on more than 30 hectares of land, Abbaye des Villers welcomes more than 100,000 visitors a year.

The Authentic History of Villers Abbey
The Abbey was founded at the initiative of Gauthier de Marbais in 1146 when the knight and his mother invited the monks of the Abbey of Clairvaux to establish a new Cistercian Abbey at Villers.

The construction of the Gothic building took more than 100 years, while the church itself took 70 years to build. Hundreds of monks inhabited the Abbey back then, and its lands expanded on thousands of hectares. This was the first golden age of Abbaye de Villers.

In the 16th-17th centuries, invasions started, and monks had to abandon the place several times.

The 18th century was the second golden age of the Abbey when neoclassical buildings were constructed and the old medieval ones renovated. The Abbot's Palace and its gardens were built during that period.

After the French Revolution, the Abbey started to decay. The buildings were looted, and the precious objects were taken away. Only ruins left under the natural forces.

The Modern History of Villers Abbey
In 1855, the railway line between Ottignies and Charleroi was built, and it passed through the Abbot's Palace gardens. At that time, people didn't know about the history and the meaning of the place.

Later in the 19th century, the State engaged in significant restoration activities, and the ruins were classified as a historic site and a monument.
At the end of the 20th century, the last restoration was initiated, and eventually, the Abbey was classified as an exceptional heritage in 1992.

Belgium Tourism:
Today, visitors can examine over 900 years of history on the marvelous ruins. One can also find lots of activities such as guided visits, family walks, open-air concerts, theatre shows, and exhibitions.

Concernant le abbayes trappistes, elles ne se visitent pas toutes, et seule l’abbaye d’orval ouvre les portes de sa brasserie (les billets se réservent en ligne à partir de début mai). Cependant, d’autres abbayes ont organisé des mini musées pour vous en apprendre plus et vous permettent de goûter les différentes bières. C‘est par exemple le cas de Chimay (appelé Espace chimay).

Next morning I set off for an hour trip to Abbaye Villers-la-Ville, a former abbey from the 13th century now in ruins, but still stands tall and beautiful. It is MASSIVE and is a must see in Walloon. My evening ended in the not so pretty former industrial city of Charleroi. There is no tourism and the city reminded me of Newark, New Jersey. Some locals I spoke with are not too proud of the bad reputation of the city and I saw why. But Charleroi is the perfect place for urban exploration and too see some abandoned places. The one place I saw was the IM power plant tower, a lonesome tower that you can walk into that is incredibly surreal and made Charleroi perfect for a night stay.

Next city was Namur where I Couchsurfed for the first time during this trip. I had the pleasure of walking around the city, river, and up the citadel that overlooks the split of the rivers, city and beyond. One thing that is incredible about this city is that it is a city, but farmlands exist so close in the horizon. It was gorgeous. Most of the trip I had a beer or two in different places to try beer. But I hadn't actually really DRANK heavy since my bon voyage party a week before departure. With my hosts, we went to a local college bar and downed plenty of brews, had good chats, played foosball, and had a great time. Don't ask about my hangover the next day.

4 hours of sleep without a shower and a migraine later, I set off for Dinant where my next hosts a Belgian travel couple picked me up and drove me to their beautiful home on the Meuse river next to a church. Every BNB should have a host that loves what they do and care for their guests. This place really defined that, as they were possibly the nicest people I've ever met. I loved them! The rest of the day I walked around Dinant and both sides of the bank and up the citadel to get nice pan ams of the city. The city was also destroyed and attacked by Germany during WW1, a part of history that fascinates me incredibly. On top of that, i am ther 102 years since that war. Next day was a rough day for me but I saw a castle, an abandoned home/castle and bike around some gorgeous countryside.

Throughout the 2 weeks spent in this country, I've met some amazing people, tasted some incredible brews, ate delicious Belgian waffles (Which I understood are mostly from Liege), learned some important French words, understood the concept of kissing on the cheek with other men, and enjoyed some Belgian chocolate. Best of, I am happy to have spent half of the country with someone. Onto Luxembourg… to be continued. :)

????????A Bélgica é um país incrível e com muitos lugares turísticos encantadoras.
Apesar de ser um país novo (independência foi declarada em 1830), possui uma história milenar como a Abadia de Villers-la-Ville.

????As ruínas do antigo monastério cisterciense podem ser visitadas com facilidade a partir de Bruxelas, e neste vídeo você verá e entenderá um pouco mais dessa história!

????A abadia foi construida no ano de 1146 de estilo romanesco, após visita de São Bernardo na região, que encorajou os locais a embarcarem neste projeto grandioso. O cavaleiro Walter de Marbais convidou os monges da Abadia de Claraval na França, para fundar esta nova abadia em suas terras em Villers.

Villers-la-Ville

Een bezoekje aan Villers-la-Ville, de statige ruines van een abdij die na de Franse revolutie werd verkocht aan een handelaar in bouwmaterialen.
In 1147 gesticht door Benediktijner monniken kende de abdij haar eerste bloei in de 13e eeuw en een tweede vlak voor de Franse revolutie.Die maakte in 1797 een definitief einde aan de kloostergemeenschap en verkocht de gebouwen aan een handelaar in bouwmaterialen.
Opmerkelijk is de abdijkerk,het koor heeft nog gedeeltelijk een dak en daar waar vroeger glas in lood de ramen sierden heeft klimop de taak overgenomen. Ook langs de buitenkant is het koor indrukwekkend met de zware steunberen.
