Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Ile de la Barthelasse

Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Ile de la Barthelasse

The island of Barthelasse , is the biggest river island of Europe. Located between Avignon (from which it is separated by the Bras Mort du Rhône) and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (from which it is separated by the Grand Rhône), it is one of the 9 districts of the city of Avignon : the Barthelasse-Piot district. It is partly integrated into the municipal area of Avignon and the canton of Avignon-Ouest since its transfer in the 1850s by the municipality of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Born from the gradual welding of a string of Rhone islands, including the island Piot, which forms its southern tip and has retained its name, the island of Barthelasse has a surface of about 700 hectares, including 400 cultivable, making it one of the largest river islands in Europe and the largest river island in France.

Situated between Avignon and Villeneuve-les-Avignon, between the two branches of the Rhône - the Grand Rhône on the Villeneuve side, the petit Rhône on the Avignon side – it covers 700 hectares of peaceful greenery just a few minutes on foot from the historic centre.

Only a thousand people live on the island, which has been protected from urban development because it is flood-prone. Much of it is farmland. Many areas are also devoted to leisure and relaxation, including a skatepark, a soccer field, swimming pools, a lake, a children's recreation centre and a youth hostel.

The peaceful and pleasant towpath offers an exceptional, unobstructed view over the Avignon bridge, the Rocher des Doms and the Popes' Palace and it is ideal for a stroll, jogging or just lounging on the grass.

And if you want to tour the island, nothing is better for that than a bicycle: the island is flat and there are many cycling paths! You will be able to buy produce direct from the farm, visit the Manguin distillery or just simple ride through the orchards. For those who like peace and quiet, the island of Barthelasse has ample accommodations: hotels, bed & breakfasts, gites and campsites.

Places to see in ( Avignon - France )

Avignon, a city in southeastern France’s Provence region, is set on the Rhône River. From 1309 to 1377, it was the seat of the Catholic popes. It remained under papal rule until becoming part of France in 1791. This legacy can be seen in the massive Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace) in the city center, which is surrounded by medieval stone ramparts.

Attention, quiz fans: name the city where the pope lived during the early 14th century. Answered Rome? Bzzz: sorry, wrong answer. For 70-odd years of the early 1300s, the Provençal town of Avignon served as the centre of the Roman Catholic world, and though its stint as the seat of papal power only lasted a few decades, it's been left with an impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture, most notably the soaring, World Heritage–listed fortress-cum-palace known as the Palais des Papes.

Avignon is now best known for its annual arts festival, the largest in France, which draws thousands of visitors for several weeks in July. The rest of the year, it's a lovely city to explore, with boutique-lined streets, leafy squares and some excellent restaurants – as well as an impressive medieval wall that entirely encircles the old city.

Avignon is famous as it is the city to which the Popes fled when leaving the corruption of Rome in the 14th century. The palace they built, 'Le Palais des Papes,' or the palace of popes, is the world's largest Gothic edifice. It was largely emptied over the centuries, and its vast stone rooms are filled with little more than old frescos, but it is still an imposing building. The Ramparts themselves were erected to keep the plague and invaders out during the turbulent middle ages, when Avignon belonged to the papacy and not the French crown.

Avignon has been continuously inhabited since the stone age, when troglodyte inhabitations were built in caves in the Rocher des Dames, a massive outcropping of rock rising over the banks of the Rhône. Today, a public park with benches, views over the surrounding countryside, a café and playground is on top of the Rocher.

A popular tourist destination is the Place du Palais, just next to the Place de L'horloge, though the casual tourist may find these places shockingly expensive, and flooded during the summer months with tourists. Within a short distance in just about any direction are the smaller squares frequented by the locals, and much lower prices. Recommended is the Place Pie, with its covered market (open 6AM to 1PM everyday) which sells fresh produce, cheeses, wines, and produits du pays. Alot tot see also such as :

Villeneuve-les-Avignon Walking Tour | Exploring Fort St. Andre

On this the eighth day of my tour around Provence, France, I take a walk around Villeneuve-les- Avignon, a small village on the other side of the River Rhone. I started my walking tour along the river path, as I walked to my first location, which was Phillippe-le-Bel Tower. This Tower marked the other end of the bridge which crossed the river, from Avignon. This was the Benezet Bridge or Avignon Bridge that I visited in a previous video This is the famous bridge which only goes halfway across the River, as it collapsed centuries earlier.

Phillippe-le-Bel Tower was part of a larger fort which was abandoned in 1669, as it was no longer needed. All that remains is the tower which I explore and offers great views over the river and Fort St. Andre, the large castle, which dominates the skyline. Next, I walking to village for a little lunch, looking at the sights including the market square, eglise collegiate notre- dame and the quaint architecture.

My main reason for choosing to visit Avignon, apart from visiting the famous bridge, was to walk around the castle known as Fort Saint Andre. This is a huge castle ruin, with massive towers that greet all who visit. I had an interesting afternoon walking around the interior walls, the Chapelle notre- dame de consolation, and the inside of those towers. This is certainly one of the best castles I've visited on my travels.

I really enjoy my city breaks around Europe, especially when I travel to different locations each day. The Provence area is just delightful and there is so much more to explore here.

I had such an enjoyable day on my walking tour around Villeneuve-les- Avignon in Provence France. There was so much history to see and it’s the history of Villeneuve-les- Avignon which I came to see.

Avignon Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Avignon in France.
A famous song that features a bridge takes us into the French Provencal town of Avignon. 'Sur Le Pont D'Avignon': thus begins the world famous French song that is familiar with both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the Pont Saint Enezet Bridge. Internal disputes in addition to power struggles in Rome transformed Avignon into the new seat of the Pontificate. The impressive Popes' Palace dominates the centre of the town. Its exterior resembles a military fortress rather than a religious residence. A coat of arms above the main entrance is reminiscent of the papal court that was founded by Klemens The Sixth. In 1348 he bought Avignon for 80,000 gold ducats from Johanna The First, Queen of Sicily. During his term of office he added a new, more luxurious building to the Old Palace that was constructed between 1334 and 1342. The beauty of the palace manifests itself in the numerous terraces and towers that were used for defensive purposes during the 14th and 15th centuries. Seven successive French popes transformed Avignon into one of the most glamorous medieval courts in Europe. The town's expansion gradually became increasingly more splendid and the pontificate's dependence on French royalty became further entrenched.
