Our visit to Villefranche sur Mer, France on the Côte d'Azur
A video of the beautiful Villefranche-sur-Mer on the Côte d'Azur, or French Riviera - whichever you prefer.
We first visited in 2012 and returned in 2018 as part of another two-week road trip through France.
We love Villefranche-sur-Mer for its style, charm and warmth. It makes an excellent base to explore the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It's lovely to come back to in the evening as it's packed with restaurants, bars & cafes covering a variety of budgets.
Only 5 miles from Nice Airport it's easy to pick up a hire car, or like us, you can include it in your own road trip. It's also easy to reach by train & bus, so there's no excuse not to visit.

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a resort town in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region on the French Riviera and is located south-west of the Principality of Monaco, which is just west of the French-Italian border. Wikipedia
The little town of Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Riviera is a pleasant sea-resort with its old town made up of colourful façades and red tile roofs, beaches and busy seafront where the terraces of cafés and restaurants overlook the authentic fishing port.
Jean Cocteau described it as ‘a source of myth and inspiration’ as its beautiful setting between Mont Baron and the Cap Ferrat peninsula made him feel ‘as if in a box at the opera’.
The town owes its importance to its bay (la Rade de Villefranche) which is one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean Sea (95 metres), allowing safe anchorage for large ships.

Villefranche-sur-Mer ???????? A Prestigious City on the French Riviera Coast 4K Ultra HD
Villefranche-sur-Mer, a prestigious city on the Côte d'Azur, offers you as soon as you arrive, whether by the ledges, the sea or the train, a grandiose panorama.
Located 4 km from Nice and 12 km from Monaco, at the foot of a vast amphitheater of hills, it was founded in 1295 and has kept many vestiges of its origin.
Maritime city with a privileged location welcoming the most beautiful units but also a small fishing port... its gastronomy is quite naturally based on fish directly supplied by local fishermen.
History :
The bay of Villefranche has been frequented since Antiquity by Greek and Roman sailors. They use it as an anchorage and give it the name of Olivula Portus. However, the site is the victim of repeated barbaric attacks. In the ninth century, Saracen pirates held a fortress on the site of Villefranche-sur-Mer25. The inhabitants forsake the seaside and take refuge on the heights; they founded another village there, Montolivo.Villefranche Foundation
In 1295, Charles II of Anjou, Count of Provence, understood the strategic importance of this site, located on the borders of his territory. In order to encourage the inhabitants to return to populate the seaside, he granted them a tax exemption. The village is thus baptized Villa Franca.

All places can be reached by trains and buses. Transportation in France is pretty reliable so we did not hire a car.

Cap Ferrat: Must do day trip from Nice, France | French Riviera Travel Guide
We take you on a day trip to Cap Ferrat today! Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, as it’s called officially, is one of the most beautiful places on the French Riviera… The peninsula between Nice and Monaco offers beautiful beaches, clear sea, enormous mansions, a cute little village, gorgeous hotels, fantastic walks along the coast and, of course, the famous Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. We’ll show you all of that… enjoy another MUST SEE of the Côte d’Azur with Anja & Aila!

Top Cities in the French Riviera (Villefranche sur Mer and more)
Join us on our trip to France where we travel to several of the most popular cities of the French Riviera!
In Episode 14 of our Eurotrip 2020 series, we feature highlights of our trip around the French Riviera including visits to the cities of Cannes, Antibes, Nice, and Villefranche sur Mer!
We based ourselves in the city of Nice, and spent a half day walking around the city of Cannes, including a visit to The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès where the famous Cannes Film Festival is held. Afterwards we enjoyed a visit to the lovely French town of Antibes, where a major highlight for us was a visit to the Picasso Museum!
We spent a few hours walking around the city of Nice, including a visit to the historic Old Town and the beautiful Nice Cathedral.
We finish our time here with a day trip to the rugged Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula where we spent the morning walking around the beautiful gardens and estate of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Afterwards we hiked along the perimeter of the peninsula, finishing in the quaint sea-side town fo Villefranche sur Mer.

Villefranche sur Mer and Nice by bus | Nice France Travel Vlog 2024
There is so much more to Nice than just the popular tourist sites in Old Nice. For just a couple euros you can take the bus to see sites like the Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Cimiez Monastery, and the beautiful village of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Villefranche-sur-mer makes the perfect day trip from Nice and can cost as little as 1 euro to get there by bus.
