Villars sur Ollon, Switzerland
Villars sur Ollon, situated at 1300 meters, is an historic alpine village located in the French speaking canton of Vaud in Switzerland. In 1913 the Villars Palace looked majestically over the village and was the center of winter and summer sports. Today, like much of the village, the Palace is undergoing a total renovation. The region is served by the Bex- Villars-Bretaye metre gauge railway. In the winter it brings skiers to the Chamossaire and chaud ronde ski lifts and in the summer it takes hikers to the gateway of les alpes vaudoise. Just driving up the mountain from Ollon to Villars is awe-inspiring.
From 1953 to 1971 the Ollon to Villars hill climb with its every conceivable hairpin turn captured the attention of car racing enthusiasts throughout Europe. Today access around the mountain is very easy.
At the Crazy Moose, a restaurant located at 1700 meters and accessible by the mountain train or by skis in the winter, there are spectacular views of the mountains which compliment the delicious cuisine of the Quebec inspired chef.
Dining around the mountain has some brilliant dishes like risotto with porchini mushrooms, spinach tarte with mashed potatoes and Switzerland never disappoints the sweet tooth with specialties
like meringue with Gruyere double cream and raspberry sauce served at the restaurant of the Golf Club Villars.
Golf in Villars began in 1922 and the 18-hole, par 70 course at 1660 meters with views towards the Mt. Blanc is beautiful and challenging. Even in the summer one can occasionally find snow drifts in the area.
Hiking in Villars is spectacular and there is every possibility from beginners and families to experienced hikers. And for the avid adventurer there are other ways to get down the mountain besides by foot. Soaring over the pine trees and trails gives one a sense of why the opportunities for inspiration in the Swiss alps are limitless.
One of the best hotels in town in the Alpe Fleurie. Its a three star but feels like a four star hotel with an excellent restaurant, cozy rooms and five star views of the ever changing and fascinating Dents du Midi.
In nearby Solalex is a valley surrounded by spectacular mountains - straight out of the book Heidi. Here contented cows graze along the green pastures. And occasionally one might even share with visitors how moo-velous the valley is. Hikes around the valley can reveal towering trees, dramatic rocks and refreshing waterfalls and rivers. Easy to explore on foot, by bike and reachable even by car.
One of the premier international boarding schools, Aiglon College, is located in nearby Chesieres. Aiglon’s campus is a virtual village with dozens of buildings providing housing, extensive academic facilities and unlimited sports. The essence of Switzerland’s international community is evident with Aiglon’s global student body. Villars captures the magic of Switzerland in every season.

Villars is an easy to access and versatile ski station located in Vaud, suitable for all level skiers with a lot of family friendly activities and offers. It is a very popular ski station in the French speaking part of Switzerland (Suisse Romande) for many good reasons.

In this video, you will see an amazing park which is full of so many beautiful and unique birds. Some of these are very rare and you would not normally see them. You will see birds that like both the air and being on water. Everyone loves flamingos, if you’re a fan of flamingos, you will be amazed by how many there are in one place. This park is a dream come true for all nature lovers and bird watchers.
The natural land and water in this area has been there since the 13th century. The rosapelikan are a really unique bird because of how long their beaks are. If it wasn’t for these parks and nature reserves, many of these lovely birds would have become extinct or exist in low numbers. It is so nice to know that more than 500 baby birds are born here each year, and they are safe and protected from danger.
The Bird Park in Villars-les-Dombes (Parc des oiseaux Villars-les-Dombes) is located in approximately 40 km from Lyon, and is considered to be the largest bird sanctuary in France.
The park’s own “collection” numbers around 3,000 birds of 300 species from different continents, making it one of the best in the world in terms of the diversity of its birds.
What’s good about this park is that it recreates the natural environments of birds and there are no cages.
The Bird Park in Villars-les-Dombes was opened in 1970 and since then it welcomes on average 250,000 visitors per year. In 2020, the Parc celebrated its 50th birthday.
