Villarrica (/viʎaˈrika/) es una localidad y distrito ubicado en el centro sur de Paraguay, en la región Oriental; y capital del 4.º departamento de Guairá, que anteriormente era territorio de Caazapá. 3 Es el distrito más poblado de su departamento.
Ubicada en las cercanías de la cordillera del Ybytyruzú, se halla en la zona centro-occidental del Guairá y limita al norte con Mbocayaty y Yataity; al oeste con Itapé y Félix Pérez Cardozo; al este con Colonia Independencia, Ñumí y Eugenio A. Garay; y al sur con San Salvador y Borja.45
Se trata de uno de los asentamientos más antiguos del país habiendo sido fundada en 1570 por el capitán español Ruy Díaz de Melgarejo con el nombre de Villa Rica del Espíritu Santo. Su sitio original de fundación fue en la antigua región de Guayrá, la que coincide con los actuales estados de São Paulo y Paraná. Además es el único pueblo subsistente de los que se establecieron en dicha provincia.6
A lo largo de buena parte de su historia sus habitantes se vieron obligados a mudarse en siete ocasiones, inicial y principalmente debido a las invasiones de los bandeirantes pero también por problemas políticos y económicos hasta finalmente llegaron a establecerse de forma definitiva en su ubicación actual en 1683, gracias a los indios Paranáes pertenecientes a Caazapá, que los defendieron a los villarriqueños de los indios de la zona de Espinillo, actual Coronel Oviedo. Por este motivo recibió los apodos de «Ciudad Andariega» y «Viajera». Prácticamente la localidad le debe a los habitantes de Caazapá su supervivencia en ese sitio.7
Terminada la Guerra de la Triple Alianza en 1870, el pequeño pueblo que era Villarrica en aquel entonces experimentó una evolución en el ámbito académico y económico debido al incremento de su población y a la actividad de sus habitantes. Esto la posicionó segunda en importancia nacional luego de Asunción. En la actualidad Villarrica sigue teniendo en su aval el haber sido pionera nacional en una gran variedad de las actividades humanas del Paraguay.6
A pesar de su tormentosa historia, la ciudad mantiene un liderazgo político entre los distritos de su departamento al ser sede de la Gobernación de Guairá, del Obispado, de la Municipalidad, de la Segunda División de Infantería, de distintas fiscalías de la circunscripción del Guairá y del Centro de Desarrollo del Guairá, entre otras instituciones.6 Aparte goza de un liderazgo académico al poseer una filial de la Universidad Nacional de Asunción y una sede regional de Universidad Católica de Asunción, que son los dos principales centros de estudios universitarios del país.8
En el año 2010, Villarrica se convirtió en la primera ciudad del Paraguay en contar con un gobierno electrónico siendo parte del proyecto Villarrica, ciudad digital.9

Main Destinations
Outisde Asuncion
San Bernardino- (45 minutes)Paraguay´s liveliest balneario, a summer destination for the young and beautiful. Originally settled by German immigrants, you can still see some houses remaining from that period. The Lago Ypacarai used to be known as the blue lake, is no longer blue, but filled with people doing water sports during December-February.
Aregua- (45 minutes) laid back town with a nice church and lake. Home to many artists and writers, which have set up nice galleries and museums. Outdoor street market selling colorful ceramics. You can visit the Museo del Mueble, Centro Cultural del Lago and El Cantaro Galería de Arte.
San Lorenzo (30 minutes) Museo Etnografico Guido Bogiani- indigenous wood carvings and feather pieces. Nice and cheap store selling indigenous handicrafts. Call before going. Located in nearby San Lorenzo, be sure to take a taxi driver who knows the place, as most people in San Lorenzo do not even know of its existence.
Encarnación (4 hours) On the way, stop at ruins and churches along the Jesuit trail. Santa maria de fe is a small town where you can see women embroidering in a sisterhood community.
Pilar- (3,5 hours) riverside city where the countries biggest cotton manufacturing industry is located. Very relaxed atmosphere.
Nueva Australia- Settled by disgruntled and idealistic Australians in October, 1893. About 700 people set up a colony without money or bosses based on the theories of Karl Marx. The tiny town with some of the descendants of the original settlers still exists about 5km West of Villarrica. Villarrica is an interesting town with a square that comes alive on a Friday night. very cheap wares sold. A second town, again with descendants, was founded by the same group of Australians at Cosme, 90km South, near Ca azapa.

In the previous episode of the “Adventure Escape Diaries” ( we finally arrived in Paraguay and were able to start our residency process. We were also able to buy a #4x4 #Toyota #Prado and are now on the search for a rental house to stay put for a few months.
Our life now in Paraguay was a lot more relaxed than our stressful times in Mexico. We felt like we had all the time in the world to search for a cozy place, that we can call our home.
We stayed at #HotelParaiso, close to #Villarrica and then moved on to #ColoniaIndependencia.
Our search for a #rentalHouse unfortunately was not fruitful but another big surprise came our way.
Alexandra was the lucky one to win a contest organized by #ChristophHeuermann and his crew of the #SYStaatenlos Catamaran in #RioDeJaneiro, #Brazil. But officially the borders between Paraguay and Brazil were still locked. How would we be able to make it across?
