A Day Trip To The Verdun Battlefield | Euro Trip 2018 Pt8

We take a day trip to the site of the Battle of Verdun, to The Ossuary memorial, the destroyed village of Douaumont, and to Fort Douaumont,

During the 300 days of the Battle of Verdun (21 February 1916 – 19 December 1916) approximately 230,000 men died out of a total of 700,000 casualties (dead, wounded and missing). The battle became known in German as Die Hölle von Verdun (English: The Hell of Verdun), or in French as L'Enfer de Verdun, and was conducted on a battlefield covering less than 20 square kilometers

The ossuary is a memorial containing the remains of both French and German soldiers who died on the Verdun battlefield. Through small outside windows, the skeletal remains of at least 130,000 unidentified combatants of both nations can be seen filling up alcoves at the lower edge of the building.

Douaumont is a commune in the Meuse department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. The village was destroyed during World War I.

Fort Douaumont (French Fort de Douaumont) was the largest and highest fort on the ring of 19 large defensive works which had protected the city of Verdun, France since the 1890s. By 1915, the French General Staff had concluded that even the best-protected forts of Verdun could not resist bombardments from the German 420 mm (16.5 in) Gamma guns. These new super-heavy howitzers had easily taken several large Belgian forts out of action in August 1914. Fort Douaumont and other Verdun forts were judged ineffective and had been partly disarmed and left virtually undefended since 1915. On 25 February 1916, Fort Douaumont was entered and occupied without a fight by a small German raiding party comprising only 19 officers and 79 men. The easy fall of Fort Douaumont, only three days after the beginning of the Battle of Verdun, shocked the French Army. It set the stage for the rest of a battle which lasted nine months, at enormous human cost. Douaumont was finally recaptured by three infantry divisions of the Second Army, during the First Offensive Battle of Verdun on 24 October 1916. This event brought closure to the battle in 1916.

Verdun in France is best known for the terrible battle in 1916 but the town itself is really charming!

Norwich Duff , a British naval officer, visited Verdun in 1819, shortly after the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars. He writes: 'Verdun is prettily situated in a valley surrounded by hills. The River Meuse runs through the town and forms several canals and ditches round the town which is fortified and, I believe, by the great Marshal Vauban. The citadel and surroundings are a good deal out of repair and people were at work on them. Though there is little to see at Verdun, every part of it felt interesting from the number of our countrymen confined here during the war. Verdun is famous for its sweetmeats, sugar plums, confits etc which are said to be the best in France. They made us show our passports here it being a fortified town.

Série La Rochelle du dessous (n°3) : un abri anti bombe sous la place de Verdun

Depuis le Moyen âge les souterrains de La Rochelle ont servi à drainer l'eau, à stocker des tonneaux de vin ou encore à se cacher pendant les guerres. Sous le quartier de Verdun, un abri anti bombes s'étend sur plusieurs kilomètres. Découverte de cet univers souterrain inaccessible au public.

Verdun - Saint Mihiel

We leave together with IDA and aim for Saint Mihiel. VNF no longer opens the locks for us so only automated locks from now on. We experience one of our worst days in terms of waterplants. When a certain lock is blocked by the plants, the VNF needs to sent a crane to remove them in order to be able to open the doors again. Later on we come across a small boat which is ‘mowing’ the waterplaats. Nevertheless we need to clean our water filter a least 10 times this day. It is stuffed with plants. Most of the time we do not sail the Meuse but the canal next to it: Canal de l’Est branch Nord.

A Walk Around Place Massena, Nice, France

The Place Masséna is a historic square in Nice, Alpes-Maritimes, France. It was named for André Masséna. Its layout was designed by Joseph Vernier in 1843-1844.

The Place Masséna is the main square of the city. Before the Paillon River was covered over, the Pont-Neuf was the only practicable way between the old town and the modern one. The square was thus divided into two parts (North and South) in 1824. With the demolition of the Masséna Casino in 1979, the Place Masséna became more spacious and less dense and is now bordered by red ochre buildings of Italian architecture.

The recent rebuilding of the tramline gave the square back to the pedestrians, restoring its status as a real Mediterranean square. It is lined with palm trees and stone pines, instead of being the rectangular roundabout of sorts it had become over the years. Since its construction, the Place Masséna has always been the spot for great public events. It is used for concerts, and particularly during the summer festivals, the Corso carnavalesque (carnival parade) in February, the military procession of 14 July (Bastille Day) or other traditional celebrations and banquets.

The Place Masséna is a two-minute walk from the Promenade des Anglais, old town, town centre, and Albert I Garden (Jardin Albert Ier). It is also a large crossroads between several of the main streets of the city: avenue Jean Médecin, avenue Félix Faure, boulevard Jean Jaurès, avenue de Verdun and rue Gioffredo.
