10 Best Places To Visit In France - Travel Guide

France, officially the French Republic (French: République française) is a country located primarily in Western Europe. It also includes overseas regions and territories in the Americas and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans,[XII] giving it one of the largest discontiguous exclusive economic zones in the world. Its metropolitan area extends from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean and from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea; overseas territories include French Guiana in South America, Saint Pierre and Miquelon in the North Atlantic, the French West Indies, and many islands in Oceania and the Indian Ocean. Its eighteen integral regions (five of which are overseas) span a combined area of 643,801 km2 (248,573 sq mi) and had a total population of over 68 million as of January 2023.

France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with its capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre; other major urban areas include Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille, Bordeaux, and Nice.

Inhabited since the Palaeolithic era, the territory of Metropolitan France was settled by Celtic tribes known as Gauls during the Iron Age. Rome annexed the area in 51 BC, leading to a distinct Gallo-Roman culture that laid the foundation of the French language. The Germanic Franks formed the Kingdom of Francia, which became the heartland of the Carolingian Empire. The Treaty of Verdun of 843 partitioned the empire, with West Francia becoming the Kingdom of France in 987. In the High Middle Ages, France was a powerful but highly decentralised feudal kingdom. Philip II successfully strengthened royal power and defeated his rivals to double the size of the crown lands; by the end of his reign, France had emerged as the most powerful state in Europe. From the mid-14th to the mid-15th century, France was plunged into a series of dynastic conflicts involving England, collectively known as the Hundred Years' War, and a distinct French identity emerged as a result. The French Renaissance saw art and culture flourish, conflict with the House of Habsburg, and the establishment of a global colonial empire, which by the 20th century would become the second-largest in the world. The second half of the 16th century was dominated by religious civil wars between Catholics and Huguenots that severely weakened the country. France again emerged as Europe's dominant power in the 17th century under Louis XIV following the Thirty Years' War. Inadequate economic policies, inequitable taxes and frequent wars (notably a defeat in the Seven Years' War and costly involvement in the American War of Independence) left the kingdom in a precarious economic situation by the end of the 18th century. This precipitated the French Revolution of 1789, which overthrew the Ancien Régime and produced the Declaration of the Rights of Man, which expresses the nation's ideals to this day.

Február 29-én a német vezérkar úgy döntött, kiterjeszti a támadást a Meuse bal partjára is, ahol két magaslatért, a 304-esért és a Mort Homme-ért folytak a leghevesebb harcok.[13][14] Április 1-jéig a franciák 89 ezer, a németek 81 607 embert vesztettek.[15][16]

Áprilisra Falkenhayn levonta a következtetést: csak akkor érhet el komoly eredményt, ha korlátozott támadások helyett egyszerre, nagyobb erőkkel támadja a teljes frontot.[17] Az erőfeszítések sikert hoztak, a bal parton elesett a két fontos magaslat. Április 1. és május 1. között a német veszteség 120 ezerre, a francia 133 ezerre nőtt.[18] Május közepén a franciák elkeseredett ellentámadásokat indítottak a Douaumont-erődért, de súlyos árat fizettek érte.[19] [20]

A nyár újabb nagy német támadásokkal indult, és a császári hadsereg bevetette új fegyverét, a foszgéngránátot. A francia vonalakat a jobb parton áttörték, és június 23-án a verduni csata elérte csúcspontját.[21][22][23] Ezután a németek kénytelenek voltak korlátozni támadó akcióikat, mivel a brit-francia hadsereg támadásba lendült a Somme-folyó mentén.[24]

December 15. reggelén a Douaumont-erőd egyik 155 milliméteres tarackja megadta a jelet a francia támadásra. A tüzérségi zárótüzet követve a gyalogosok három kilométer mélyen behatoltak az első vonal mögé. Visszafoglalták Louvemont-t, Bezonvaux-t és a Bois des Caurières-t, valamint ejtettek 11 ezer hadifoglyot.[25] (A szócikkben gyakran előforduló bois szó erdőt, összefüggő fás területet jelent.) A németek szinte mindenütt visszaszorultak februári állásaikba, és a csata véget ért.[26]
A verduni vérszivattyú helyszíne ma is életveszélyes

Verdun, France

SEE MY HISTORY GROUP ON FACEBOOK :

Verdun in France is best known for the terrible battle in 1916 but the town itself is really charming!

Norwich Duff , a British naval officer, visited Verdun in 1819, shortly after the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars. He writes: 'Verdun is prettily situated in a valley surrounded by hills. The River Meuse runs through the town and forms several canals and ditches round the town which is fortified and, I believe, by the great Marshal Vauban. The citadel and surroundings are a good deal out of repair and people were at work on them. Though there is little to see at Verdun, every part of it felt interesting from the number of our countrymen confined here during the war. Verdun is famous for its sweetmeats, sugar plums, confits etc which are said to be the best in France. They made us show our passports here it being a fortified town.

My channel on you tube : is one of the most prolific from Poland, although unfortunately not the most visited. With almost one film per day, one may be forgiven for thinking I do nothing else but I do have a day job as well. I have produced more than 400 original films, most in English but also in Polish, French, Italian, Spanish and the occassional hint of German and Hebrew. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects

Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating!

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focussing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!

Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region and the sites and give a pretty good idea where future films are going to come from! Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

In 1997 I founded Polish Business News .There are a number of business related films here and I intend to do many more on CRM (customer relations management).

My blog can be found via and and contains background information and more details of many of my films. This information is in English.

I have also a second blog on the site . This site has been recently started by a friend and I think it will soon be one of the leading travel sites in Poland, if not Central Europe. It contains additional information about some of the places and events shown in these films but most of that is in Polish.

Journey to the Past: Exploring the Battle of Verdun ????????

#WWI #verdun #battlefield

In February 2020, we embarked on a profound journey to the historic battlegrounds of Verdun, where The Battle of Verdun (Bataille de Verdun) unfolded from 21 February to 18 December 1916. This battle, the longest of World War I, etched its mark on the Western Front in France and played out on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse.

Join us as we revisit this pivotal moment in history, where the echoes of bravery and sacrifice still resonate. Our expedition led us to key sites, including the Verdun Memorial and museum, the somber Douaumont Ossuary, and the mighty Forts Douaumont and Vaux. These fortifications bore witness to the ferocious struggle during the Battle of Verdun, with Fort Vaux showcasing the enduring heroism of its garrison, led by Major Sylvain-Eugene Raynal.

Fort Douaumont's capture without a fight, only three days into the Battle of Verdun, left the French Army in shock and set the stage for nine months of relentless combat. Ultimately, it was recaptured by French forces during the First Offensive Battle of Verdun in October 1916.

Experience the history, valor, and the incredible stories of Fort Vaux and Fort Douaumont, and the events that unfolded within their walls. Discover the poignant lessons from the past and the resilience of the human spirit.

Don't miss this poignant exploration of Verdun's battlefield and its role in World War I. Subscribe and join us on this historical journey! #WWI #Verdun #Battlefield #HistoryBuff

France: Verdun

Verdun (sur Meuse) is a city in the Meuse department in Lorraine in north-eastern France.
Verdun was the site of a major battle of the First World War.

Its landmarks are:
The Châtel Gate is the only remaining part of the medieval city walls. It leads onto La Roche Square.
The Citadelle which was built in the 17th Century. It is still in military hands but the underlying tunnels can still be visited.
The Notre-Dame de Verdun Cathedral that was consecrated in 1147, but was built on the site of an earlier church. The 12th Century Lion Door on the north side has a lavishly decorated tympanum. The whole building was heavily restored in the 18th Century.
The Episcopal Palace which was built in the 18th Century by Robert de Cotte. Part of the building is occupied by the World Peace Centre.
The Princerie Museum is located in the former residence of the princes of Verdun. It contains historic works of art from the region. Alas the museum was closed on the day that we visited Verdun.

Verdun France Great Place To Visit Super endroit à visiter

We went to Verdun France to see the World War 1 battlefield, but we loved the city of Verdun itself. It has a beautiful waterfront area with lots restaurants and nice hotels. It wasn't too crowded, and the weather was great as well. We loved it.

Fort Douaumont (French: Fort de Douaumont) was the largest and highest fort on the ring of 19 large defensive works that had protected the city of Verdun, France since the 1890s. By 1915, the French General Staff had concluded that even the best-protected forts of Verdun could not resist bombardments from the German 420 mm Gamma guns. One of the most powerful guns during the First World War. These new super-heavy howitzers had easily taken several large Belgian forts out of action in August 1914.
Fort Douaumont and other Verdun forts were judged ineffective and had been partly disarmed and left virtually undefended since 1915. On 25 February 1916, Fort Douaumont was occupied without a fight by a small German raiding party comprising only 19 officers and 79 men. The easy fall of Fort Douaumont, only three days after the beginning of the Battle of Verdun, shocked the French Army. It set the stage for the rest of a battle which lasted nine months, at the enormous human cost.
