S1 – Ep 351 – Christiana – We Crossed the Wide Vaal River Again!

On our way to Christiana, we were captivated by the impressive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, witnessing vast canals supplying water to the area, a sight that pleasantly surprised us. The journey through town led us over a remarkable, long single-lane steel-girded bridge which crossed the wide Vaal River. On the other side we attempted to find the nearby rock engravings. We couldn't locate them, but on the bright side, we had to cross the bridge for a second time! Our curiosity also led us to the Christiana on the Vaal Resort, which was closed because of the recent floods. Driving through the town we were amazed by an early twentieth-century church building which was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Town Hall from a distance and we were saddened by it being burnt down due to unrest. On a more positive note, we had the opportunity to visit the well-organised school, the Christiana School for the Blind. However, on our way out of town we passed the hospital and saw that it had burnt down due to human error while renovations were being done. Despite the mixed emotions, the visit was a unique and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northwestprovince #christiana

Abandoned and forgotten Places in South Africa, Bethulie Dam Resort

Once Bethulie Dam Resort was a very popular Tourism destination for fisherman or holiday makers with accommodation and camping facilities. Today, unfortunately, all that is left of the chalets and rondawels, are only ruins. You may still camp over night at your own risk, for there are no security. Fishing is still good.
The small town is rich in history with concentration camps from the Anglo Boer War. The Orange river and Caledon river is flowing nearby into the Garieb dam.

Ghost towns in South Africa (Part 1) Abandoned Mine Town !!!

Join Paul and Gerhard as the explore an mine town that has been abandoned for the last 20 years.

Hello everyone, this is Part 1 of Ghost towns in South Africa. The series where me and my brother travel South Africa listen to all the stories the ghost towns have to tell.

Its amazing to see what can happen if the main purpose of a town existence disappears, its as if its crying out to tell its story to anyone who will listen. Today it was me and my brother's turn to open our eyes and ears to listen to the Ghost towns story.

After we finished listening to the town's story we set our sight on the sunset as we made our way to the Glacier floors and Rock Art.

Its Paul here, hope you enjoyed . We really enjoy bringing these type of videos to you guys. so stay posted for the next. Have a nice day, live life like you want to live.

Ghost towns in South Africa (Part 2) Exploring Rock Art!!

Join Paul and Gerhard as they explore the old glacier floor/paving that was patiently waiting to be re-explored.

This is part 2 of me and my brother exploring Old Ghost Towns and abandoned places in South Africa.
It was one of those thing that a person can drive past a 1000 times in daily life but you never notice, that's if you don't go looking for it. That was the case for me and my brother but on that faithful day we put our sights on those prehistoric boulders. We even found some Native Rock Art and some that were not so native, but never the less all of those people left there mark for a long time to come.

It seemed the old Spooky House had been lived in till a few years ago, the paint suggests that but the doorways said otherwise. I'm not so sure what cause people to abandon it, but that mystery is waiting for the next explorers to come and answer it.

It was fun listening to the to story these majestic boulders and building had to tell.
Hope you enjoyed, Then till the next time !!!

Putsonderwater Abandoned Railway Ghost Town South Africa

An abandoned railway village called Putsonderwater on the railway line between De Aar and Upington, in the dry Northern Cape province of South Africa. It's not that hard to reach, along a reasonably good gravel road between Marydale and Kenhardt. It's well worth the detour, and such a special experience exploring these fast disappearing villages, that were once thriving communities, now reverting back to nature.

There are a couple of versions of how the name Putsonderwater, which means well without water in the Afrikaans language came about. The one I like, is a man by the name of Dawid Ockhuis dug a well back in the late 1800's, and struck liquid gold in an arid land, when his well proved to have a good supply of water.

In those days, the trek boers would come past and ask for water. Not being a man who liked to share his supply, he would reply die put is sonder water, meaning the well is without water. There are other stories, but this one is the best for me.

S1 – Ep 239 – Pofadder – A Small Town Situated in the Northern Cape!

The short drive from Pella was over in no time and the time we spent in Pofadder was awesome. The drive down the main road took us to a filling station with old vehicles in front. I walked into the shop and couldn’t believe my eyes! There was a full-size, beautifully-painted wagon inside the shop. This was such a treat. We then took a drive through this small town and saw some beautiful church buildings. We explored this Northern Cape town a little more and then headed to the Pofadder Hotel where we had a wonderful dinner and spent the evening. The next morning, feeling refreshed and ready for the day, we left this great little town. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #pofadder #northerncape #namaqualand #pella

Ep. 8: Camping at Bundu River Lodge / Traveling and camping in South Africa - Free State

Welcome to Episode 8.
I continue to travel and camp in South Africa, for now focusing on central SA.
In this episode I visit Bundu River Lodge on the banks of the Sand River.
Bundu River Lodge is next to the N1 between Winburg and Ventersburg.
If you are looking for a quiet camp site with a farm atmosphere I can recommend it.
You can go camping without breaking the bank, because their tariffs are reasonable.

Ep 2 Van life- Visiting the coldest place in South Africa.

Today I hit the road from Ventersburg to Sutherland. I visit a nice camping site, meet a new “friend” and enjoy the nice temperature of Sutherland.
I realise I still need to make quite a few changes to my van, to really make it comfortable and suited for the long road…
Come with me on the next part of my journey...

Putsonderwater, a disappearing ghost town (It leaves you with a sad feeling about days gone by)

The first settlers at #Putsonderwater were the Connans, Scottish immigrants. The railway line built during WW2 provided #Putsonderwater with a lifeline. During the 60’s a proper train station was built, which once upon a time was awarded ‘most attractive station.’

At one point over 100 people bought “on the book” (on credit) from the local store. Even the Boswell Wilkie Circus paid a visit to the town once a year.

How ironic that the very institution that gave life to the town was also its demise. With the collapse of the SA rail freight, the little village became a ghost town.

Sadly today all that remains are abandoned buildings and outhouses. What a tale they could tell.

Matjiesfontein Through the Ages

A quaint and self-contained village nestled at the fringe of the great Karoo mountains, Matjiesfontein is rich in history and old-world charm. This gem of a town will take you back to the 1800’s with its splendid historic buildings and stories from the Victorian era, yes still buzzes with life today as a popular destination for families seeking a city escape, couples looking for a romantic wedding location or passers-by on the nearby national highway looking to refresh.

The double-storey Milner Hotel was built in 1899 by James Logan, in the early stages of The South African War. The hotel was used as a military hospital during the conflict with British forces and the hotel turret was then used as a lookout post. Some 10 000 troops were camped around the village during this time. James Logan, founder of Matjiesfontein, passed away in 1920 and is buried in a little cemetery 10 kilometres away. His tomb is located next to the grave of George Lohmann, a famous English cricketer who spent the last years of his life in the superb climatic environment of the Karoo.

In 1968, David Rawdon, hotelier par excellence whose claim to fame includes establishing Rawdon's Hotel at Nottingham Road, the well-known Lanzerac Hotel set in the Stellenbosch vineyards, the Marine Hotel in Hermanus, and The Drostdy Hotel in Graaff-Reinet, purchased Matjiesfontein Village. After performing extensive renovations and utilising the wealth of antiques gathered during his world travels, David reopened the hotel in 1970, renaming it The Lord Milner Hotel. In testament, the entire village of Matjiesfontein was preserved as a National Heritage Site in 1975.
Today, visiting Matjies is like taking a step back in time, with the comfort of modern-day luxuries and an array of exciting activities to explore the wonders of this little town.
