The atmosphere that reigns in the city is unique. The streets are adorned with their finest finery, the windows sparkle, the smells of cinnamon and spices evoke childhood memories, Christmas carols resound in the depths of the churches. The whole city is transformed into an enchanting setting

Christmas, like nowhere else...
For more than a month, Strasbourg is enveloped in a festive and spiritual spirit that has hardly any equivalent in Europe.

Strasbourg, capital of Christmas enjoys an exceptional reputation. Each year, nearly two million visitors flock to the Alsatian capital to discover its wonders.

The Strasbourg Christmas Market extends over more than ten sites, all located within the Big Island.

During the four weeks of the Strasbourg Christmas market, as soon as night falls, the city is adorned with sublime illuminations that give it a magical dimension. The big fir tree, place Kléber, is the most beautiful expression of this. Thirty meters high, wonderfully decorated, it impresses with its presence, its majesty. Symbol of an Alsatian tradition dating back five centuries, it is the ambassador of a city bathed in light.

The Christkindelsmärik, or market of the child Jesus, is the name given in the Alsatian language to the traditional Christmas market which has been held since 1570 in Strasbourg, Alsace, and was for a long time the only one in France. It begins on the first Saturday of Advent and ends on the evening of December 24. The Christkindelsmärik attracts two million visitors from all over the world every year.

The origins :

Christmas Eve in Alsace - Christkindel and Hans Trapp coming to ask if the children have been good. (Theophile Schuler 1858)
The Christkindelsmärik in Strasbourg is one of the oldest Christmas markets, which were specific to the Germanic world. The most famous was that of Nuremberg, but those of Frankfurt, Dresden and Berlin were also very famous. In the Middle Ages, a market was organized in Strasbourg in anticipation of the feast of Saint Nicolas on December 6. It is indeed to this saint, bishop of Myra in Turkey in the 4th century, that the role of giver of gifts to children was attributed. To allow parents to obtain sweets and toys, a market, called in Alsatian “Klausemärik”, was then set up a few days before this date.

Places to see in ( Strasbourg - France ) Mundolsheim

Mundolsheim is a French town of Strasbourg Eurométropole located in the department of Bas-Rhin , in the region East Grand. This town is in the historical and cultural region of Alsace. The municipality of Mundolsheim is located 8 kilometers north of Strasbourg (latitude 48.65, longitude 7.7), in the district of Strasbourg , at an altitude of between 137 meters (at the Souffel level) and 185 meters ( at the place called Holderberg) and covers 412 hectares .

Due to its geographical location, it has rapidly changed from being a rural municipality to a dynamic small town, since it counts on its territory numerous companies spread over three areas: the Maréchaux and Floralies business parks and the Parc des discoveries. It is also served by many lines of communication: the railway, the A4 motorway and the Brumath road.

The Mundolsheim station , located on the Paris - Strasbourg line , is served by TER Alsace trains to Strasbourg , Haguenau and Wissembourg. Part of the Hausbergen yard is located in the Mundolsheim area.

The Protestant churc at church Street. The internal portal is part of the original bell tower of xii th century, fabulous animals therein. In 1729, the nave that is not connected to the porch tower is raised by about 1.50 m and the large windows are pierced. The church, whose porch is a historical monument, houses the tombs of eight Joham Mundolsheim, lords of the place. The bell tower houses three bells, the oldest of which, melted by Mathias Edel, dates from 1769. The organ of Michel Stiehr and Xavier Mockers de Seltz is installed there in 1822.

Corner street of General de Gaulle, Petite Street . The building that houses the library is the old town hall built in 1855. It was built on the site of the Laube, a modest construction with a roof on pillars, to monitor the cabaretiers who were to sell only the Joham wine, the lords of the village.

The center has beautiful half-timbered houses. We will notably notice the school, 29 rue du General-de-Gaulle. Built in the xviii th century thanks to a royal gift, it was intended to replace the one destroyed in 1663 during the battle between the royal prince, the future King of Württemberg and the French army of General Rapp.

Places to see in ( Strasbourg - France ) La Wantzenau

Places to see in ( Strasbourg - France ) La Wantzenau

La Wantzenau (German: Wanzenau) is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. The town is located 12 km northeast of Strasbourg. It is the last village along the Ill river before it joins the Rhine a few kilometres downstream. The village limits touch the border with Germany, although the closest bridge across the Rhine is in Gambsheim, 10 km north of the village. It is one of the villages of greater Strasbourg (Strasbourg Eurométropole). The village centre and the recently developed area, Le Golf, are on the north side of the river Ill with the neighbourhood of Le Woerthel on the south side.

The terrain around the village is very flat and marshy. In fact the ending au in the name denotes in Alsatian a town which is subject to seasonal flooding. The town was probably founded in the 8th century as a fishing outpost of Honau, a nearby monastery founded by Irish monks on an island in the Rhine river. The name does not appear in any records until 1331 as Wanzenowe. It was granted status as a parish by the bishop-prince of Strasbourg in 1468. During the Thirty Years' War, in the early 17th century, the town was completely wiped out by Swedish troops. It was also badly damaged during both World Wars. There are many signs of the town's experience with war. Rue Albert Zimmer is named for a soldier who became a local hero fighting with General Leclerc in World War II, only to be killed in fighting near Strasbourg in 1944. The town is dotted with bunkers and blockhouses from the Maginot Line, especially in the La Wantzenau forest. There is also a German-made bunker visible in the house on the corner of the rue Leh and the rue du Moulin.

Today, the town has preserved many 18th century half-timbered Alsatian-style houses. The town has graded a promenade along the Ill river. It is connected to a network of bicycle lanes including the Piste des Forts which circles greater Strasbourg, and a path through the La Wantzenau forest through La Robertsau and into downtown Strasbourg. La Wantzenau is well known in the region for the high number of fine restaurants including Le Relais de la Poste, Les Semailles and Le Moulin de la Wantzenau, the last vestiges of a now closed cooking school in the town. The town is twinned with Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche in Haute-Vienne because the population of La Wantzenau was evacuated there at the start of the war with Germany in 1939.

La Wantzenau is a bedroom community of Strasbourg. It combines the advantages of village life with individual houses while still being part of the CUS with train and bus transportation to the centre of Strasbourg. 73% of the working population works outside of the village.

The centre of the town has several commercial establishments including a grocery store, two bakeries and two tobacconists. There are also several public buildings including a post office, the town hall, the Foyer Culturel, the Jean-Claude Klein sports complex, a football stadium, two pre-schools, a primary school, and a junior highschool.

STRASBOURG, FRANCE WALKING TOUR 4K, LA PETITE FRANCE #travel #strasbourg #france #walkingtour

Strasbourg
Strasbourg is the prefecture and largest city of the Grand Est region of eastern France and the official seat of the European Parliament. Located at the border with Germany in the historic region of Alsace, it is the prefecture of the Bas-Rhin department.

In 2020, the city proper had 290,576 inhabitants and both the Eurométropole de Strasbourg (Greater Strasbourg) and the Arrondissement of Strasbourg had 511,552 inhabitants.[8] Strasbourg's metropolitan area had a population of 853,110 in 2019,[4] making it the eighth-largest metro area in France and home to 14% of the Grand Est region's inhabitants. The transnational Eurodistrict Strasbourg-Ortenau had a population of roughly 1,000,000 in 2022. Strasbourg is one of the de facto four main capitals of the European Union (alongside Brussels, Luxembourg and Frankfurt), as it is the seat of several European institutions, such as the European Parliament, the Eurocorps and the European Ombudsman of the European Union. An organization separate from the European Union, the Council of Europe (with its European Court of Human Rights, its European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines most commonly known in French as Pharmacopée Européenne, and its European Audiovisual Observatory) is also located in the city.

Together with Basel (Bank for International Settlements), Geneva (United Nations), The Hague (International Court of Justice) and New York City (United Nations world headquarters), Strasbourg is among the few cities in the world that is not a state capital that hosts international organisations of the first order.[9] The city is the seat of many non-European international institutions such as the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine and the International Institute of Human Rights.[10] It is the second city in France in terms of international congress and symposia, after Paris. Strasbourg's historic city centre, the Grande Île (Grand Island), was classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, with the newer Neustadt being added to the site in 2017.[11] Strasbourg is immersed in Franco-German culture and although violently disputed throughout history, has been a cultural bridge between France and Germany for centuries, especially through the University of Strasbourg, currently the second-largest in France, and the coexistence of Catholic and Protestant culture. It is also home to the largest Islamic place of worship in France, the Strasbourg Grand Mosque.
Economically, Strasbourg is an important centre of manufacturing and engineering, as well as a hub of road, rail, and river transportation. The port of Strasbourg is the second-largest on the Rhine after Duisburg in Germany, and the second-largest river port in France after Paris.

Place Kléber Strasbourg Christmas Walking Tour | Cris Amacna Abroad - France

Enjoy walking around the Great Christmas Tree that sits majestically on Place Kléber in Strasbourg, Alsace, northeast France. The giant tree is the essential symbol of Strasbourg Capitale de Noël. Around the tree are different stalls selling delicacies and items symbolizing Christmas in Alsace Region.
Place Kléber is the largest square in Strasbourg, named after the French revolutionary general Jean-Baptiste Kléber. You’ll find his statue here.
