Nagapattinam is a base for heritage and historic points like Nagore, Velankanni, Sikkal, Kodiyakkarai, Vedaranyam, Mannargudi and Tharangambadi.
Nagore Durgha, a 16th-century minaret located in Nagore, is one of the important pilgrimage centres of the town. Kanduri festival is a 14-day event celebrated for the annual urs(anniversary) of the saint Hajrath Shahul Hamid (1490–1579 CE), in honor of whom the minaret was built. The festival is celebrated in commemoration of the anniversary of the saint's death, and pilgrims from various religions participate in the rituals and rites. The festival is also seen as a sacred exchange between Hindus and Muslims expressing solidarity of mixed faith in the region. It is believed that 60 percent of the shrines were built by Hindus and historically the minaret garners many domestic and international visitors. There are three other prominent mosques; one near Nagai Pudhur Road, one near the new bus stand, and another at Moolakadai Street.
[Kayarohanaswami Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The temple has been in existence from the 6th century CE and has been reverred by the verses of Tevaram, the 7th–8th century Saiva canonical work by Appar, Campantar and Sundarar.The temple is one of the seven temples of the Thyagaraja cult, classified as Saptha Vidangam, where the presiding deity Thyagaraja is believed to portray different dance styles The temple is also known for the shrine of Neelayadakshi, the consort of Kayarohanaswami.
Soundararajaperumal Temple is a Hindu temple in the town dedicated to Vishnu. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham by Thirumangai Azhwar, one of the 12 poet saints called Azhwars belonging to the 6th–9th century.] Nagapattinam is base to some of the prominent Hindu temples like Sikkal Singaravelan Temple at Sikkal, .
Velankanni is a pilgrimage centre located 10 km (6.2 mi) from Nagapattinam. The town is known for the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, a Roman Catholic church built during the 17th century. Pilgrimage to the basilica is common during September when people of many faiths, especially Hindus, Muslims and Christians of all denominations visit the basilica

【India Drive 4K】Velankanni Tamil Nadu

Velankanni (Vēḷāṅkaṇṇi), is a Special Grade Panchayat Town in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It lies on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, 350 km south of Chennai (Madras), 12 km south of Nagapattinam, and 33 km southeast of Thiruvarur.
Once a port that traded with Rome and Greece,[1] the tiny commercial center gradually lost its importance to the larger city of Nagapattinam. The canal built to link this town with Vedaranyam still lies to the west. The Vellayar, a minor branch of the Cauvery River, runs south of the town and discharges into the sea. The town was among the worst hit by the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
The town is home to one of the most visited Roman Catholic Latin Rite shrines called the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health.
Velankanni has been chosen as one of the heritage cities for the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) scheme of the Government of India.

Traveling and stop at roadside candy sellers is pretty interesting and the Thenmittai is so tasty! We were at Kodikkarai, the South-Eastern tip of Cauvery River Delta in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu where the Palk Strait [(பால்க் பாக்கு நீரிணை என்பது இந்தியாவின் தமிழ்நாடு மாநிலத்தையும் இலங்கைத் தீவின் யாழ்ப்பாணக் குடாநாட்டையும் பிரிக்கும் ஒரு நீரிணையாகும். இது வடகிழக்கே வங்காள விரிகுடாவை, தென்மேற்கே பாக்கு விரிகுடாவுடன் இணைக்கிறது. இந்நீரிணை 33 முதல் 51 மைல்கள் அகலமானது. தமிழ்நாட்டின் வைகை உட்படப் பல ஆறுகள் இந்நீரிணையுடன் கலக்கின்றன. கம்பனி ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில் சென்னையின் ஆளுநராக (1755–1763) இருந்த இராபர்ட் பாக் என்பவரின் பெயரில் இந்நீரிணை அழைக்கபப்டுகிறது-so, The Palk Strait is a strait that separates the Indian state of Tamil Nadu from the Jaffna Peninsula (யாழ்ப்பாணக் குடாநாடு) on the island of [Ceylon(Sri Lanka)இலங்கை] It connects the Bay of Bengal to the northeast and the Gulf of Baku to the southwest. The strait is 33 to 51 miles wide. Many rivers, including the Vaigai of Tamil Nadu, flow into this waterway. The canal is named after Robert Bagh, who was the Governor of Chennai (1755–1763) during the Company's rule)] the Bay of Bengal. Internationally known as Point Calimere(Kodikkarai), the name dates back to 16th century when the Portuguese established trade connections with the Chola dynasty or kingdom.
The blinding sun shone relentlessly high up on the blue canvas of the cloudless sky by the time we reached Point Calimere post a boat ride at Muthupet Mangrove Forest(முத்துப்பேட்டை மாங்குரோவ் காடு-திருவாரூர் மாவட்டம் முத்துப்பேட்டையில் உள்ள அலையாத்தி காடுகள் தமிழ்நாட்டிலேயே மிகப் பெரிய சதுப்பு நிலக்காடுகளாகும். இது திருவாரூர் மற்றும் தஞ்சாவூர் மாவட்டத்திற்கு இடையில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இதன் மொத்த பரப்பளவு 119 கிலோ மீட்டர். முத்துப்பேட்டை மாங்குரோவ் காடுகள் பிச்சாவரம் மாங்குரோவ் காடுகளைவிட 10 மடங்கு பெரியது-So,Tiruvarur district are the largest swamp forests in Tamil Nadu. It is situated between Thiruvarur and Thanjavur district. Its total area is 119 km. Muthupet mangrove forests are 10 times bigger than Pichavaram mangrove forests.)
Bordered by the sea, the sanctuary has three natural habitats — the mangrove, wetlands dotted with salt pans and dry evergreen forest also known as Vedaranyam.
It is here at Vedaranyam that the endemic species of black bucks breed and graze. Created in 1967 for conservation of blackbuck antelopes, the sanctuary is spread over 377 sq km and is also wintering ground for migratory birds. But when I reached the sanctuary, the harsh sun had driven most animals deep in the forest seeking shade except the brown fur feral ponies that sauntered lazily. Untamed for being born in wilderness, the ponies were descendants of once domesticated breed of horses.
A gentle breeze ensured our bumpy ride in a SUV remain comfortable. We have seen black buck and Antelope in a considerable distance.
Further down the trail, a family of wild boars loitered about grunting merrily but there was no sign of the dominant breed of the forest. Jackal, the only predator in these forests, would make its presence felt later in the evening, the naturalist informed us.
As we trundled along, some animal sped across the road. Black bucks at last! There were quite a few grazing in the dry grass landscape. A pair here, a loner there and few were hiding in the thorny bushes with only their antlers peeping out. Unlike spotted deer that venture closer to humans sometimes, the black bucks were wary of human presence and stayed away from the trail. They did not shy away but held our gaze gauging, judging and then literally ignoring us.
The sun had dipped further and distant chirping of birds returning to their abode could be heard. Promptly at the break of dawn we made our way towards the sea beach where we were told dolphins could be sighted. As village fishermen prepared for the day, we did spot some snouts of playful dolphins but they remained elusive. We were, however, rewarded with bird sightings-----billed pelican, Nordmann's greenshank, spoonbill sandpiper and black-necked stork. Endangered species include black-headed ibis, Asian dowitcher, lesser flamingo, spoonbill, darter and painted stork.
We had chance to see the ruins of the brick lighthouse built by Chola kings but the devastation during 2004 December tsunami had left just a hint of the ancient structure. What caught our eyes, however, was a puddle of sea water full of mudskippers, an amphibian fish. A little further stood the 13 meter high British lighthouse built in 1890 that still functions as a beacon.
