We're back, the previous episode having been posted back in early 2018! Because of the lock down I can't travel and now I've got the time to continue this series.
The dual sport adventure continues, returning to Russia and finalizing a dash of over 5000km for the border. The fastest way out of the country is to take an old Soviet ferry boat from Vanino to Sakhalin island and from there take the international ferry from Korsakov Russia to Japan. On the way down to Vladivostok and back up I'm putting down 800 to 1100km's daily for six days straight. Now that I'm taking the ferry to Hokkaido this Russian port city has become a massive detour all the while having no time left. But this was originally the final destination of my motorcycle trip and I could not have lived with myself not traveling there in the end. Camping for days on end next to fuel stations and on parking lots, the fatigue accumulating with the long riding days into the night while fighting time zones and the uncertainty always increasing since the ferries turned out to be less straightforward to book. With 10 days left on my Russian visa there is barely any room for mistakes and delays. Russia has a notorious reputation when it comes to overstaying visas and other riders in the past have run into serious complications. These ten days were the least fun and it turned out to be a massive learning experience for this solo traveler. Still, you never fail to meet some great people along the way..

My name is Pedro Mota and back in 2014 I left the Netherlands on a Honda Transalp dual sport motorbike on a trip to Vladivostok on the eastern end of Russia. On the way there we took a big detour through the Middle East, Central Asia and Mongolia. Little did I know back then that this would evolve into a years long motorbike travel further taking me through Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the American continent.

Ice navigation is a dreaded word for sailors. Remember Titanic ? It sank because of an iceberg. Ice navigation of a huge vessel is not an easy task. It requires a lot of caution and meticulous navigation , else there could be heavy damages to the vessel’s hull pr propeller due to the ice. Vanino is one such remote port city , its in the eastern-most part of the Russian continent. It was the month of february and the sea was all ice , we needed an ice breaker vessel ahead of us to clear all the ice in our path. It was an adventure for me but a non-routine duty for my sailor. Thanks to my sailor i got a chance to travel to , literally, this ‘nook’ of Russia. And i so enjoyed being here, i loved the snow i loved the shoreleave, i loved the food , especially the wide array of desserts , my!!! What a variety!?! Come travel with me to this nook and see for yourself what this icy port city has to offer. I would love to re-live those moments again and again. Such beautiful memories.

Russia, or the Russian Federation, is a transcontinental country located in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. Covering an area of 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi). It is the largest country in the world by area, spanning more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, stretching eleven time zones, and bordering 16 sovereign nations. The territory of Russia extends from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Black Sea and the Caucasus in the south. With 146.7 million inhabitants living in the country's 85 federal subjects, Russia is the most populous nation in Europe and the ninth-most populous nation in the world. Russia's capital and largest city is Moscow; other major urban areas include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Chelyabinsk and Samara. The East Slavs emerged as a recognisable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. The medieval state of Rus' arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus' ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states, until it was finally reunified by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the 15th century. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which became a major European power, and the third-largest empire in history, stretching from Norway on the west to Canada on the east. Following the Russian Revolution, the Russian SFSR became the largest and leading constituent of the Soviet Union, the world's first constitutionally socialist state. The Soviet Union played a decisive role in the Allied victory in World War II, and emerged as a recognised superpower and rival to the United States during the Cold War. The Soviet era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including the world's first human-made satellite and the launching of the first humans in space. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russian SFSR reconstituted itself as the Russian Federation and is recognised as the continuing legal personality and a successor of the USSR. Following the constitutional crisis of 1993, a new constitution was adopted and Russia has been governed as a federal semi-presidential republic. Vladimir Putin became acting president on 31 December 1999 after Boris Yeltsin resigned and was elected president in March 2000. Since then, he has dominated Russia's political system as either president or prime minister. His government has been accused by non-governmental organisations of numerous human rights abuses, authoritarianism and corruption. In response, Putin has argued that Western-style liberalism is obsolete in Russia, while maintaining that the country is still a democratic nation. The Russian economy ranks as the fifth-largest in Europe, the eleventh-largest in the world by nominal GDP and the fifth-largest by PPP. Russia's extensive mineral and energy resources are the largest such reserves in the world, making it one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas globally. Russia hosts the world's ninth-greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, at 29, and is among the world's most popular tourist destinations.

11/13 . Tren Transiberiano - Khabarovsk - Trans-Siberian Railway
Hay muchas estaciones donde el tren se detiene, mucha gente, principalmente turistas, aprovechan para sacar fotos. En Khabarovsk, el tren se detuvo por una hora. Se dice que la ciudad es muy bonita y tiene un paseo a orillas del río Ussuri. También sería la ciudad más helada del mundo con medio millón de personas. En la guerra civil rusa (1917-1922) la ciudad fue capturada por las tropas japonesas que apoyaban a la Guardia Blanca (coalición de rusos y diferentes países) contra los Bolcheviques. En 1969 hubo también una batalla cruenta entre tropas chinas y soviéticas por unas islas en el río. Esta cuidad está muy cerca de la frontera China.
Personas del tren tomaron taxi para ir al río, nosotros decidimos caminar cerca de la estación.
En esta ciudad vivió Dersú Uzalá por un tiempo, para saber sobre él se tiene que ver la película de Akira Kurosawa que ganó el premio Oscar a la mejor película extranjera en el año 1976, esta película es extraordinaria. También hay dos libros sobre el tema de Vladímir Arséniev, la película se Kurosawa se basa en uno de los libros principalmente.

There are many stations where the train stops, many people, mainly tourists, take the opportunity to take pictures. In Khabarovsk, the train stopped for an hour. It is said that the city is very beautiful and has a promenade on the banks of the Ussuri river. It would also be the coldest city in the world with half a million people. In the Russian Civil War (1917-1922) the city was captured by Japanese troops supporting the White Guard (coalition of Russians and different countries) against the Bolsheviks. In 1969 there was also a bloody battle between Chinese and Soviet troops over islands in the river. This city is very close to the Chinese border.
People from the train took cabs to go to the river, we decided to walk near the station.
In this city lived Dersú Uzalá for a while, to know about him you have to see the film by Akira Kurosawa who won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1976, this film is extraordinary. There are also two books on the subject by Vladimir Arseniev, the Kurosawa movie is based, mainly, on one of the books.
