Railways in Normandy, France
Happy September!
Between the 17th and 21st August 2019, I had some time to explore some railways in Normandy, France.
My video includes a trip from Bayeux to Lison and back on the Intercités (Outbound) and TER trains (Return).
It also includes some clips of trains at Bayeux, Lison and Carentan.
The railways were pretty good in Normandy. The TER network is particularly extensive, however service frequencies were odd on some lines. (For instance, there were no trains at Bayeux between 19:30 and 23:00). Interestingly, the SNCF network runs on the left, the same as in Britain. This is odd considering that France drive on the right hand side, and all metro systems in France (I think) also run on the right hand side.

The City of Valognes ft. Coffee & Roman baths! - Seas the Day (Ep23)
This week is Valognes. It's somewhere we've passed through quite a lot having come off the Cherbourg ferry, so we thought it was about time we had a proper explore around the town. We didn't realise until we did a bit of research that there were settlers here from the 1st century BC. We got the chance to explore one of the oldest structures still standing in the Manche department, the Gallo-Roman baths, had a delicious picnic and a coffee from Le Versaille Normand (Matt was very excited to say the least!) This is their Facebook page - We also had a wonder through the backstreets of the town, trying to find the Abbey which is now a hospital and had a look around the outside of the church that has been reconstructed following WWII. We were unable to go inside as there was a service in progress but it was still very impressive to see!
We're sorry if the audio was a bit muffled this week, it was very windy and there wasn't that many sheltered placed but boy, are we glad spring is here and its bought the sunshine with it!

The island has been a strategic point holding fortifications since ancient times, and since the 8th century AD it became the seat of the Saint-Michel monastery, from which it draws the name. The Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.[1] More than 3,000,000 people visit it each year
4K Cherbourg - Paris Saint-Lazare à 200km/h en Omneo Premium
Bonjour à toutes et à tous, c’est avec grand plaisir qu’aujourd’hui, je vous emmène en ballade sur la magnifique ligne de Cherbourg ! le plus long trajet au départ de Paris Saint-Lazare !
De la pointe du Cotentin à la capitale, nous avalerons les plus de 370 kilomètres à travers une grande variété de départements et de paysages !De cherbourg à Valognes, le profil de ligne sera assez prononcé et le paysage très vallonné avec la traversée du Massif Armoricain, pour ensuite arriver dans la zone très plane des Marais du Cotentin (malheureusement sec car vidéo tournée l’été). Après notre entrée dans le Calvados au niveau de Lison le profil sera de nouveau légèrement accidenté jusqu’à Caen.
De Caen jusqu’au kilomètre 205 peu avant le tunnel de La Motte (le plus long du parcours), nous traversons la deuxième portion autorisant le 200km/h ! Une vaste pleine au tracé rectiligne.
Au delà de Lisieux, le profil sera ponctué de longues rampes. Nous traverserons les vallées de l’Iton, de l’Eure pour enfin rejoindre celle de la Seine à Mantes et par la même occasion le début de la banlieue Ouest Parisienne.
Petite particularité, nous emprunterons le Groupe 6 de Mantes à Paris en raison de travaux sur l’itinéraire habituel.
Ouverte de 1855 à 1858, cette grande radiale eut jusque dans les années 70 une vocation internationale, avec notamment les Grands Express au départ de Saint-Lazare en correspondance avec les paquebots de la Cunard Line pour Londre ou New York en gare de Cherbourg-Transatlantique. Aujourd’hui cette ligne garde une grande vocation touristique avec notamment l’accès aux plages du débarquement pour les touristes étrangers.
Nous ferons aujourd’hui le trajet à bord d’un Omnéo Premium V200, déclinaison grande ligne du Regio2n avec intérieur haut de gamme.
Portions à 200km/h : Valognes - Carentan, Caen - Lisieux et Lisieux - Bernay soit environ 95 kilomètres.

Hello everyone, it is with great pleasure that today, I take you for a walk on the beautiful line of Cherbourg! the longest journey from Paris Saint-Lazare!
From the tip of the Cotentin to Paris, we will swallow the more than 370 kilometers through a wide variety of departments and landscapes! From Cherbourg to Valognes, the line profile will be quite pronounced and the landscape very hilly with the crossing of the Armorican Massif, to then arrive in the very flat area of the Cotentin Marshes (unfortunately dry because video shot in summer). After our entry into Calvados at Lison the profile will again be slightly rugged until Caen.
From Caen to kilometer 205 shortly before the La Motte tunnel (the longest of the route), we cross the second portion allowing the 200km/h! A vast solid with a straight line.
Beyond Lisieux, the profile will be punctuated by long ramps. We will cross the valleys of the Iton, the Eure to finally join that of the Seine in Mantes and at the same time the beginning of the western suburbs of Paris.
Small particularity, we will take the Group 6 from Mantes to Paris because of works on the usual route.
Open from 1855 to 1858, this large radial had until the 70s an international vocation, including the Grands Express from Saint-Lazare in correspondence with the liners of the Cunard Line to London or New York at Cherbourg-Transatlantique station. Today this line keeps a great tourist vocation with access to the landing beaches for foreign tourists.
Today we will make the trip aboard an Omnéo Premium V200, a long-distance version of the Regio2n with a high-end interior.
Portions at 200km/h: Valognes - Carentan, Caen - Lisieux and Lisieux - Bernay or about 95 kilometers.

L'adieu des BB26000 et leurs corails à la Normandie
Bonjour à tous !
Le 2 février 2021 marqua, la fin des locomotives #BB26000, surnommées Sybic (contraction de Synchrone et de Bicourant), sur les trains reliant Paris-Saint-Lazare à la Normandie. Après les BB22200 dont les dernières sont livrées en 1986, les BB26000 constituent, pour la #SNCF, une nouvelle série de locomotives bicourants universelles, permettant de tracter aussi bien des trains de voyageurs rapides à 200 km/h que des trains de marchandises lourds. Les livraisons de ces nouvelles machines s’étalent du 1er avril 1988 (BB26001) au 23 juillet 1998 (BB26234), soit sur plus d’une décennie. Elles sont engagées sur des lignes parcourables à 200 km/h telles que Paris – Orléans – Limoges – Toulouse (POLT), Paris – Nevers – Clermont-Ferrand ou encore Strasbourg – Mulhouse – Bâle (TER 200). Concernant la #Normandie, la ligne de Mantes-la-Jolie à Cherbourg bénéficie de plusieurs opérations de modernisation, entamées en 1989, telles que son électrification en 25 0000 V, la suppression de certains passages à niveaux ou encore les relèvements de la vitesse à 200 km/h sur certaines portions. Ces améliorations sont mises en service le 27 mars 1996 de Bueil à Cherbourg et le 21 mai suivant de Mantes-la-Jolie à Bueil. Ainsi, la traction diesel et les turbotrains laissent la place entre le 31 mai et le 1er juin 1996 aux BB16000 et BB26000 tractant des rames corail, sur les axes Paris-Saint-Lazare – Cherbourg et Paris-Saint-Lazare – Trouville-Deauville.
Les BB26000 sont, alors, principalement engagées sur les trains reliant le bassin parisien au Cotentin, via Caen, Bayeux, Lison, Carentan et Valognes. En effet, sur l’axe Paris – Cherbourg, il existe trois sections aptes à la circulation à 200 km/h : la première, de Bernay (PK 159,034) à Lisieux (PK 189,450), la seconde, du PK (Point Kilométrique) 208,685 à Caen (PK 238,300) et la dernière, de Carentan (PK 313,109) à Valognes (PK 342,617). Un programme de rénovation des voitures corail, tirées notamment par les BB26000 normandes du dépôt d’Achères, circulant sur les axes Paris-Saint-Lazare – Cherbourg/Trouville-Deauville, a été mis en œuvre à partir de 2007 et financé en grande partie par la région Basse-Normandie. Cette dernière a notamment choisi de leur appliquer une livrée étoilée (violet pour la 1ère et vert pour la 2ème classe). L’État français, devient à compter du 13 décembre 2010, l’autorité organisatrice des trains Intercités (anciennement Corail), exploités par la SNCF, qu’il nomme « Trains d’Équilibre du Territoire (TET) », et dont la ligne Paris-Saint-Lazare – Cherbourg fait partie.
Néanmoins, de nombreuses lignes Intercités sont menacées durant les années 2010, faute de rentabilité et de remplissage suffisant pour la SNCF, faisant craindre un arrêt de certains services. C’est alors que les régions françaises entrent dans la partie, pour reprendre la gestion et le financement des lignes Intercités, dont la région Normandie (fusion des ex-régions Haute et Basse Normandie), est la première à en récupérer. En effet, une convention avec l’État signée le 25 avril 2016, accorde à la région Normandie depuis le 1er janvier 2020, la responsabilité des lignes TET sur son territoire que sont les lignes Paris – Rouen – Le Havre, Paris – Trouville-Deauville, Paris – Caen – Cherbourg, Paris – Granville et Caen – Le Mans – Tours. Dès lors, elles sont intégrées au réseau de transport régional dénommé NO_MA_D et rattachées, soit au service Krono+ (liaisons grand confort au départ de Paris-Saint-Lazare), soit au service Krono (liaisons interurbaines incluant, notamment, les dessertes Paris - Granville et Caen - Le Mans - Tours).
Ce transfert s’accompagne de la commande de 40 rames Omneo Premium (Bombardier), financées en partie par l'État, à hauteur de 720 millions d’euros, afin de remplacer les voitures corail vieillissantes, sur les services Krono+, et donc sur la ligne Paris – Caen – Cherbourg. Ainsi, depuis février 2020, les livraisons, néanmoins retardées par la crise du COVID-19, des nouvelles rames normandes s’enchaînent, pour atteindre une bonne moitié en février de l’année suivante. La totalité des rames seront livrées d’ici à la fin de l’année 2021, et c’est donc la fin des BB26000 en Normandie, après 25 ans (1996-2021) de bons et loyaux services. Les BB15000, plus anciennes que les Sybic, bénéficient, à ce jour, de quelques mois de sursis mais elles ne devraient pas voir l’aube de l’année 2022, celles-ci étant très proches de la fin de vie et de la radiation, tout comme les voitures corail qu’elles acheminent.

Lochore Castle | Scotland | Scottish Ancestry | Wardlaw
This was the fortress home of the Lochore family, established by Robert the Burgundian in c.1128.Lochore Castle was described as one of the strongest castles in Fife in the 16th century.
The tower, built in the late 14th century, was surrounded by a curtain wall with four round artillery towers. Excavations in 2015 found medieval pottery imported from France, fine window glass, and a carved stone shot-hole. Conservation works stabilised the ruin in 2016.
Loch Ore was drained in 1792 with the cutting of a large channel, but originally the castle had stood on an island. This was a Celtic crannog dating to at least the 10th century, the medieval name for which was Inchgall, Gaelic meaning ‘Island of the Strangers’. This name refers to the French knights who took over the site. The castle passed successively to the Valognes family and the Wardlaws of Torrie, in the 15th century.

Horrible French Coaster of Pain
We spent a week in the north of France and stumbled upon this cute little themepark called Festyland. There was literally no one waiting in line for this ride, so we got to ride like 5 times in a row. Turns out this one coaster is anything but cute. It looked harmless, but it was literally backbreaking. Bumpy as hell. It actually broke the screen of my Kodak Zi6, which I had in my pocket, only minutes after taking this video.
