Traditional and timeless - Vacoas Mauritius

Vacoas is a place that time seems to have forgotten and this makes it very charming to visit. There are less high-rise buildings, wide sidewalks and a traditional tea place that has been in operation for 75 years. Yes the metro is coming and the bus terminal replaced the old train station and post office, but many original shops and their owners legacies remain. Vacoas also has more casinos and aquarium shops that I have seen before in Mauritius.

Price of vegetables in Mauritius - Vacoas Market

We return to Vacoas, now known as the Manhatten of Mauritius, to visit the fruit, vegetable, and food market. We started our adventure with a new fruit for us, custard apple, and then onto some old favorites, Chinese guavas, and gatos. Lining the outside of the market are dozens of food stands and snacks, and they were filled with new and exciting eats. Vacoas has become a place of innovation in new and exciting food, as well as bringing the old favorites and historic classics.

It's not only about the great food, it is also a massive structure filled with vegetables, fruits, and clothing. We walked around and checked the price, no tomatoes for us, wow, the prices were extreme, but there were a few other bargains out there.

We took a drive from Vacoas CBD down John Kennedy Street, through Hollyrood , Glen Park and Henrietta. We were trying to find the turning to Tamarind Falls and got a bit lost. We did find it in the end though.

Deer burger in Vacoas Mauritius at One N Only

We came to get the deer or Cerf burger, but ended up eating loads of great food. We started with Boulette, dumplings in a clear soup because they are always ready and you can start eating in under 30 seconds. The meal of the day was chicken Kalia, tons of rice, and tamarind achar. Riki is still trying to figure out the spicing. Followed by the deer burger, my fav of the day. They made a milkshake-like drink for us that they had invented called Ole Ole. Based on the Filipino drink halo-halo, but with a Mauritian twist. It was a great day at the One N Only in Vacoas Mauritius. Thank you Shameem and Mama Mary.

Let's discover some of the Mauritius food you have to try when visiting the island. A convenient way to sample many of the popular street foods of Mauritius (and learn about its history) is through a food tour of Port Louis. We had a great experince with Taste Buddies, a local company that runs 3 -hour food tours both in Port Louis and in the South of the island. Of course, you can also have a DIY Mauritius street food tour, using the shops we visited as guidance. Everything we tried was delicious, the dholl puri being our favorite!

Solferino Vacoas: innovative, inventive and friendly Mauritius

We visit the Solferino suburb of Vacoas in Mauritius. Starting at Robirosh restaurant with the best noodles in the world. The presentation is 5 star, the taste combinations are fantastic, and the menu is fun and very clever. We walked down the road a bit and discovered a genius coconut seller with his coconut cutting machine. Solferino also has an old shingle house, tons of snack shops, and all the other standard shops of a small suburb, but the best bit was how friendly everyone was.
