EXPLORING USAKOS TOWN IN ERONGO REGION OF CENTRAL NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Usakos is the last town on B2 highway from Windhoek to the west coast of Namibia and resort town of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay deep sea harbor.

#Usakos #Namibia #SouthernAfrica

Usakos:

Usakos (Damara: grab the heel, Otjiherero name: Okanduu) is a city on the banks of river Khan, 140 kilometres north-east of Swakopmund in the Erongo Region of Namibia. It is located on the B2 (Trans-Kalahari Highway), the main road between the Walvis Bay and Johannesburg. The town has 3,000 inhabitants and owns 58 square kilometres of land. Usakos was scheduled to be downgraded to town status before November 2010.

The settlement was founded in 1900 as a watering station for locomotives when railway construction workers from Otavi Minen- und Eisenbahngesellschaft (Otavi Mining and Railway Company) (OMEG) arrived here on their way from Swakopmund to Tsumeb. Surrounded by mountains, Usakos is quite picturesque. Certain spots around the town show the longest uninterrupted horizon in the world. It is the closest town to the Spitzkoppe, often referred to as the Matterhorn of Namibia.

Development and infrastructure
Usakos is the junction of the branch railways to Tsumeb and the Angolan border, Outjo and Grootfontein from the line to Windhoek.

Politics
Local authority results, 2010
In the 2010 local authority election, a total of 1,029 votes were cast in the city. SWAPO won with approximately 47% of the vote. Of the three other parties seeking votes in the election, UDF received approximately 31% of the vote, followed by RDP (17%) and COD (4%).

Notable residents
Usakos is the hometown of prominent politicians Alpheus !Naruseb and Tsudao Gurirab. Michael Goreseb represented the town politically as well.
The first town in the east of the Namib Desert on the main B2 road from Swakopmund, Usakos lies on the southern bank of the Khan River, nestled in the last hills before the Namib, at the edge of a vast expanse of gravel plains. The town originally developed around the railway workshops which were built to service the narrow-gauge Otavi line, completed in 1906. Unit 1960, the town prospered. Nowadays the town's main role is one of service centre to vehicles plying their way to and from Swakopmund / Walvis Bay and Windhoek. As a reminder of the town's heyday, Locomotive No. 40 stands in front of the railway station, one of three Henschel steam trains built in Germany for her colony's narrow-gauge railway.

About This Episode:

Bartolomeu Dias sailed along the Atlantic coast in 1488. Near the area of today's Henties Bay he discovered such an abundance of fish that he named this coastline Praia das Sardinhas, Coast of Fish. The fresh water source was first discovered by Schutztruppe soldiers in 1886. In 1920, a minerals prospector stayed overnight. After tasting the water he was said to be healed from an affliction.[5]

The namesake of the town is major Hendrik Henty Stefanus van der Merwe who discovered the place in 1929 while looking for water. He had been hunting a rhinoceros in the arid hinterland of the Namibian coast near the Brandberg in order to collect a reward from a museum in Pennsylvania that was in search of a rhino skeleton. After shooting the rhino and scraping meat from the bones, water resources of the expedition diminished and forced the party to load the decomposing carcass and search for water.[6][7]

They chose to head into the direction of the Atlantic coast and reached it close to Cape Cross. From there van der Merwe and his fellows searched southwards for the mouth of Omaruru River. A few miles south of the mouth they discovered a deep sand valley with reed grass growing in it, advertising the presence of fresh water. Van der Merwe liked the place and after delivering the bones and collecting his reward, returned the following Christmas to build a wooden hut in the riverbed. The place became known as Henty se baai (Henty's Bay) and developed into a holiday hideout,[6] mainly because of the abundance of fish at this spot.[5]

In 1951 the South–West Africa Administration mandated to South Africa, proclaimed erven in the Omaruru riverbed that were available for rent, but the erection of permanent structures was not allowed. The first shop was established during that time. A lighthouse was erected to guide ships along the dangerous Namibian coast. In the 1960s mining holes were dug after diamonds had been found in the area on a few occasions. A few years later mining was abandoned due to lack of success. In 1966 it was decided that the riverbed must not be settled in, and property north and south of it was sold. A hotel was built one year later, and the town began to develop.[7]

SPITZKOPPE AND PONTOK GRANITE MOUNTAINS IN ERONGO REGION CENTRAL NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Video of tour to famous Spitzkoppe Mountain located in Erongo Region of central Namibia, between towns of Usakos and Swakopmund. Taken in March 2021.

#SpitzkoppePontokMountains #ErongoNamibia #SouthernAfrica

Spitzkoppe Mountain:

Spitzkoppe, one of the most often photographed sites in Namibia and country's well-known landmark, is located off the main B2 road Usakos - Swakopmund.
Together with the Brandberg or the nearby Erongo Mountains, Spitzkoppe is the most famous (although not one of the highest) mountains in the country.
For the Namibians it is hard to appreciate nature's beauty because it is something that people see everyday and it has become part of their everyday life. However, when people from other countries come to explore the country they truly get amused by its natural beauty.
The age of the mountain is more than 700 million years. In 1946 the Spitzkoppe was first climbed from its western face. Ever since then the mountain remained popular for Namibian and foreign climbers. The Spitzkoppe rises about 1784 meters (5857 feet) above the flat surrounding plain. There are large variety of plants in the area, such as the Myrothamnus flabellifolius, Boscia foetida and the Kleinia longiflora. Almost the only tree specie to be seen is the Acacia reficiens. Bird life is represented by several species one of these is the Herero Chat which is one of most beautiful birds in the area. The Spitzkoppe has one of the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises in Namibia. The sun changes its colour from a light orange to a dark yellowish. Just before dark one can experience peace and quietness whilst viewing magnificent open land. The quietness allows one to listen to the little creatures and they move around and make up all sorts of noises. At night one can watch the stars in the open sky. If it is a full moon, one can appreciate all the light scattering over the waste land. The Spitzkoppe is also known as the ''Matterthorn of Africa.''

The Matterhorn of Namibia
The Spitzkoppe is situated about 120 km north-east of Swakopmund and is a mere 30 km away from the well-travelled route between Usakos and Swakopmund.

Actually the Spitzkoppe consists of two separate mountains: The large Spitzkoppe, which is 1728 m high and the small Spitzkoppe, which has a height of 1584 metres. Further west we also find the so-called Pontok Mountains.

For hikers and mountaineers the Spitzkoppe is a paradise. Beginners can practice nicely here and for professionals the ascent of the peak is a real challenge as it is difficult. The first ascent of the challenging west side was in 1946 and up to today only 600 roped parties have succeeded to reach the peak. One reason for this is also that during the summer months it is not possible to climb the Spitzkoppe due to the unbearable heat.

All around the Spitzkoppe hundreds of rock paintings can be found, same goes for the Pontok Mountains. Here you find the most prominent place of discovery, the so-called Bushmen’s Paradise. Unfortunately many paintings have been damaged by vandalism. You will also find paintings of rhino here, which indicates that the animals must have roamed the area many, many years ago.

The Rock Arch is also a well-known formation and has featured as backdrop in numerous films already and which has been depicted in calendars, photographic competitions and in travel guides.

What story does this boulder that the Bushmen regard as sacred? I followed the guide to Bushiman Paradise. These paintings are drawn by the Bushman tribe. These paintings were drawn for communication with other tribes. The first tribe to arrive at this place draws a picture first. If you have painted a picture of a lion, you are informing that there is a lion here. Other tribes may come here. The oldest petroglyphs found in the African continent. The hunting life at that time is intact. And there is also the characteristic crawler. This is a picture of a man walking on four feet. When I hunted the animals, I crawled like this when I entered the range where I could shoot the bow. Another Dolsan, This is a picture of a poisonous snake. From here to here. This is Bushman. Bushman is holding a pair of arms and raising one leg here and attacking the snake. Would not it be 'snake care' nowadays? It is rocky all the way from the foot to the mountain top. The rock seems to have overcome the mud. The guide is standing in front of the rocky mountain to show something. A huge stone bridge with a hole in between rocks creates an incredible sight. How many times do you have to wind up to make this look?

Top 5 attractions of small town Okahandja in Namibia, southern Africa

Okahandja town: top 5 attractions and historical images, Namibia, southern Africa.

#Okahandja #Namibia #Top5Africa

Okahandja:

Timecodes:

0:51 Lutheran Church
1:20 Mbangura Market
2:07 Railway station
2:48 Horse riding club
3:11 Moordkoppie
3:45 Bonus: old Okahandja

The Church of Peace (Friedenskirche Deutsche Evangelische-Lutherische Gemeinde), a Lutheran-Evangelistic church built in 1952, and also the house of Dr. Vedder, one of the oldest in town, are located in old part of Okahandja.

Just south of the post office, on Hoof Street, is a building known as the old stronghold, or the old fort. This was the town's old police station, started in 1894, though now it is empty and falling into disrepair.

Mbangura Market

This craft market is Okahandja’s best known tourist attraction. Woodcarvers from all over, and as far as the Kavango Region of north-eastern Namibia, who practice their ancient skills come here to sell their goods. Since wood is not resistant to the wear and tear of time, wood sculptures survive less well than other forms of art and are therefore an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. The wood-and-thatch market is situated next to the main road at the town’s entrance and in town center.

Railway station

It serves the town of Okahandja and is part of the TransNamib Railway.

Okahandja is situated on the Windhoek - Swakopmund line, built in 1902 during Imperial Germany's colonial rule of German South West Africa. In 1914 this line was extended to Walvis Bay.

Okahandja is connected to a number of towns in the north of Namibia via the railway junction in Kranzberg, which lies on the Windhoek-Swakopmund-Walvis Bay route, and to the south and east of Namibia via Windhoek.

Moordkoppie

The historical animosity between the Nama and the Herero had its most emphatic expression at the Battle of Moordkoppie (Afrikaans for Murder Hill) on 23 August 1850. During the battle, 700 Herero under the command of chief Katjihene were massacred by Nama forces. Half of the victims were women and children, whose bodies were dismembered for the copper bangles on their arms and legs. The scene of this tragedy was a small rocky hill near the centre of town between the B2 and the railway line, 500 m north of the Gross Barmen turn-off.

Reit Club Okahandja - Horse riding club
In 1909 the club house was built by Dr. Fock, the Mayor of Okahandja, to be his residence. In 1958 it was made into a club house and stable yard called Reit Club Okahandja.

The Reit Club has numerous facilities for the equestrian sport, consisting of 120 stables, paddocks, a club house, a residence, jumping and dressage facilities with a cafe and a large spectator pavilion.

Indigo Safaris creates bespoke safari itineraries in southern and eastern Africa. We have been doing this since 2009. Our website has loads of useful destination information and insights, as well as numerous sample itineraries across different price ranges. Check out

Our founder's first trip to Namibia was in 1997, and he visited on three more occasions before setting up Indigo Safaris. Since then, he has led half-a-dozen trips there with clients, and visited another five times on educational and inspection tours. Amongst our small team of safari experts, two have worked as guides there, and two more have visited multiple times. Safe to say, we know Namibia intimately, and have our finger on it's healthy pulse.

Although the whole country is essentially a desert of one sort or another, the diversity of landscapes, coupled with an excellent and safe road network (75% gravel roads) makes for a jaw-dropping road-trip, or a stunning flying safari. The diversity is not just in the landscapes, there a great mix of wildlife, cultures, history, and activities. Find out more here

Etusis Lodge:

In the heart of the Etusis Marble Mountains, you will find one of Namibia’s most fascinating landscapes, where you can get close to the wild animals in open 4×4 vehicles, on horseback or on foot.

Volker and Susanne Ledermann had a dream: to preserve a piece of original Africa. In 1993 they fulfilled this on the back then agricultural farm Etusis. The Etusis Nature and Game Reserve was gradually expanded to its 21,000 hectares today.
Other than most wildlife reserves in Namibia, we consciously avoid fences, which suppress the natural migrations of the wild: zebras, antelopes, leopards and many other animals have complete freedom to roam on Etusis.

The Etusis Lodge was built a little later in the heart of the reserve – with a gentle ecologically sustainable tourism concept, in which mankind understands herself as a guest. This has created jobs for the local community and, last but not least, we are trying to give each of our guests an impression of the uniqueness of Namibian nature and the necessity to preserve it.

Three things make the visit to Etusis unique:

One of the most spectacular landscapes of Namibia with the Etusis marble mountains, the Otjipatera mountain range, the Etusis waterfall and the Etusis plain.
The opportunity to experience nature in a special way – whether in open Safari vehicles, on horseback or on hikes.
You do not only come as guests but become part of the Etusis life. Whether eating together at the long table on the terrace or talking at the evening campfire about the experiences of the day while the Zebras come to drink at the waterhole just across the dry riverbed.

The Etusis Lodge and Horseriding is located halfway between Windhoek and Swakopmund, nestled in a more than 21,000 hectares, mountainous wildlife sanctuary.

Etusis – in English “the place where you can dive deep” is named after the deep lake by the waterfall and is both historically and scenically worth a trip. But we also invite you to dive deeply into a true African Nature experience.

Erongo Region DVD Trailer

A short teaser for the soon to be launched Namibia 14 regions DVD set. Full DVD coming soon.

How Swakopmund and Walvis Bay looks like in 2023

Spitzkoppe, Namibia, Africa

The Spitzkoppe (from German for pointed dome; also referred to as Spitzkop, Groot Spitzkop, or the Matterhorn of Namibia), is a group of bald granite peaks or bornhardts located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib desert of Namibia. The granite is more than 700 million years old and the highest outcrop rises about 1784 meters (5857 feet) above sea level. The peaks stand out dramatically from the flat surrounding plains. The highest peak is about 700m above the floor of the desert below.

T10-Abenteuer-Namibia - Spitzkoppe + Rock Arch + Black Pools Finale
